GDB 30: Starting to get choked

Wanye
December 17 2008 06:45PM

Normally we would attempt to write something really clever about the game tonight.

But seriously we aren't in the mood after that Shitanusly® craptacular display of Hockery we witnessed last night. We will be watching and we will be in attendance at the JL meeting.

But we can assure you of this, Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club®. The patience of the OilersNation -- i.e the patience of the good, hard working, honest folk who pay the bills -- is running low.

And some of these people are crazy.

They rioted on Whyte Ave.

And that was when you were winning.

I think they need to call me up for a couple games (Esspecially Friday against Anahiem, I would make Avery look like a choir boy if I ended up on thesame ice surface the human rake Chris Pronger)

Anyways, I think I have what it takes, when I step on the ice the play Majic Stick by 50 Cent; then I am like an undertaker out there, first I dig, then I bury.

You should have trademarked "craptacular." I think that word will come into play sometime tonight. Perhaps often.

Is it just me, or does Cole have only one move?

A bit off-topic, but that dude in the pic has some serious knuckle-hair issues. But nevertheless, I think the result of tonights game is going to dictate the rest of the year. Another egg-laying performance and all hell will break loose amongst Oiler fans. A win however should calm everyone down as we'll be back playing mediocre hockey once again, which is what were used to anyways.

@ Puckbag: Another loss will have fans who lean to overreaction doing exactly that. Then again, two or three straight wins will send them the other way and create discussions about how "trading for Kovalchuk" -- will all but ensure a division title on the way to a berth in the Cup Final.

The 40-game mark is the time to assess this team.

I read that s-mac was back and wearing a visor...when can he get back into the line up??? We need him back so we can have some reseblance of a tough line. I expect the Canuckleheads to come out flat after the ceremony...or does that just happen in E-town. Hopefully that's all the sarcasam I have for tonite. Lets go Oil

@ RobinB: At 40 games we might be out of it and then we will have to win 30 of the last 20 games to make the playoffs. The time is now to make or break the season...2or3 wins is great but we need to rattle off 5+ and get our heads out of the water

Out of it after 40 games? That's exactly what I'm talking about -- overreaction. Way too low after losses. Way too high after wins.

40 game mark eh?

Halfway through a season is adequate to evaluate a teams massive shortcomings and (very) moderate successes?

What a joke. Say what you want about this team, that "intelligent" fans and pundits had predicted that despite our nice run at the end of last year that in no way shape or form would the Oilers compete for a NW Division title this year - let alone make playoffs.

On paper, I look at this team and still think they are underachieving. I still think that they could and should make the playoffs (probably no higher than 7th or 6th).

But what does it even matter if we make the playoffs? Nothing will change, we won't be able to compete because we're still too small, our skill is overrated, the defense thinks offense first all the time, no legitimate starting goaltender, stale coaching staff.

The overall philosophy of this team is just stupid. I mean really, there no other way I can describe it. It's all just f*cking stupid. Doesn't matter if they go on a bit of a run while heading towards the 40 game mark.

Everything is going to stay the same in the end, and nothing is going to matter until major coaching, management and personnel changes are made.

Who in there right mind HONESTLY thinks this season is still up for grabs, that this team can really pull it together and do something, anything special with the remainder of the games this year?

Bah.

@ RobinB: TRUE, but in the last decade... and i'm not joking, how many times in this tough west division have the Oil been looking from the bottom up in the standings and had to try and push to get in the playoffs. That's all i'm eluding to.

@ R-DAWG: MacIntyre has been skating for weeks actually, and he is wearing a visor, and he hates it. He say he can't breath wearing it, and there is no way you see him until around Jan 15th. His orbital bone needs that long to properly heal, and you can't dress him and tell him not to fight. I think his instincts would take over and if a tough guy ran him or a teammate he would respond.

@ Sing A Song For SingSing: Make up your mind. It's not even 30 games yet and you've done your evaluation already -- this team is hopeless.

In case you don't get it, teams -- unless they are off to brutal starts -- take 40 games or so to assess what they have and what they need.

Regardless of your personal level of obvious frustration, that's how it works. Teams can't make changes and trades unless they have trading partners. Teams are evaluating. Look around the league right now -- there's almost no action outside of call-ups and waiver grabs. And I know there's not even much action on the phones right now because -- here's a concept -- I talk to the people who make the trades.

If it doesn't matter, if nothing will change, if it's hopeless, then walk away and spend your time doing something that doesn't bring you such frustration. Doesn't sound like you're having any fun being an Oilers fan.

I think had we just lost the game in normal Oilers fashion people would not be upset. But it was the most embarrassing loss in over a decade after they had played their first "complete" game of the year.

I, like many of you, am tired of this roller coaster.

I think as fans, all year, all we have wanted is some consistency but the team has been very jekyl and hyde and as a fan that is hard to take. One period you watch them dominate and fly around the ice like they could beat anyone...other nights they look like disinterested millionaire's out for a skate unwilling to sacrifice themselves for their teammates.

What that says to the likes of Tambellini has yet to be seen.

The Oilers need to get out there and do a couple of hot laps in some old school tube skates. That'll get them ready for this game.

Robin I think the point that you're missing is a lot of people ARE looking forward to 40 games, and fully expecting things to be the same old same old. After getting sold a steaming pile of bs at the beginning of the year about winning the division. (and having it lapped up by the mainstream media)

A team (and for many) an organization that has displayed not a clue over the past 8 years, at some point, wears people out.

And I think the REAL realization is, blind faith no more. Analyze these guys real close....and you see other than Hemsky, you're right, there's not a soul on this team that anyone would want anyway.

So people are pissed. And I don't blame 'em.

@ RobinB:

That's why I said, the whole philosophy surrounding this team of players and organization from the top down is just "f*cking stupid", and this is precisely why I can't "make up my mind". I don't know how to judge, what to judge and I'm just confused period.

One thing I am positively sure of however is that for the long run, the Oilers are in a bit of a hopeless situation, whether they still make playoffs this year or not. They still are missing so many pieces to compete and I would've preferred to see at least a 2-3 year rebuild after '06-'07.

This season is -almost- a write off, because until one of Lowe or MacTavish are gone (preferably both) - nothing is going to matter because nothing will ever change. People have been mentioning "patters" lately, this organization is in falling into a bad one.

Few trades, players underperforming, no true system, bad mix of personnel, no balance.
