GDFD No. 54: Quack quack quack quack quack, Mr. Ducksworth

Welcome to the sixth Game Day Fire Drill, for this, Calgary’s 54th game of the season on Feb. 11, 2009.
Ugh these guys again. Remember all that stuff from my last GDFD featuring the Ducks?
It’s a sad state of affairs indeed that finds that Ducks coming into Calgary with a record barely above .500 and still somehow fifth in the Western Conference. One supposes that it speaks to the overall quality of the top four teams versus that of the remainder of the pack, but screw it.
All that more or less still applies. So yeah.
Who:
The Calgary Flames (31-18-4 for 66 points. Tied for third in the West, first in the Northwest) and the Anaheim Ducks (27-24-5 for 59 points. Six in the West, third in the Pacific)
When:
8 p.m. Mountain time and 10 p.m. Eastern time. All other time zones should buy a new Rubik's Cube.
Where:
Honda Center, Anaheim, California.
Calgary is 11-11-1 on the road this year, but they’ve lost three in a row away from Calgary. But the good news is that Anaheim is barely above .500 at home (14-11-3), but one of those wins was against the Flames, 3-2, on Nov. 2.
What (to hate about the Ducks):
Named after a kids' movie — Enjoy the movies all you like, but this is like if someone named a basketball team after the Looney Tunes in SpaceJam. They didn't even have the smarts to draft that Adam Banks kid. He was unreal.
Anaheim — It's like L.A., only a lot crummier. It's also in Orange County, which locals now unironically refer to as "The O.C."
The Iowa Chops — Another embarrassing team name. They were also one of several teams to host Sarah Palin in the run-up to the US presidential election. Guilt by association.
Saturday's game — Sucked.
Corey Perry — Dickburger with cheese.
Why?
Because. Enjoy the game and feel free to fart around in the comments section!
Cuttin' it close my friend!
I wrote it at like 3pm EST and sat around like a jerk all day.
Of course Bert scores on a day I call him out.
@ Kent:
uhh, more likely BECAUSE you called him out.
Well, true enough.
Dion looks good so far. So does Gio. otherwise, the Flames are chasing the puck around out there. The first line scored but has looked like crap ever since.
Lucky to be ahead after that one. Kipper made some nice saves on some quality chances.
Iginla looks like a 4th line player out there. WTF is wrong with that guy?
What does it take for the Ducks to be called for a penalty in this game? I saw at least half a dozen clear infractions ignored in the first period. Now we're half way through the second and they still haven't even taken a minor??
after seeing iggy on that PP, i'm 99% sure someone has hexed him. there is no other rational explanation....
Jarome does his best 3rd liner impression on the PP, missing an open net, and then Glencorss does an Iggy impression with a rocket to the top corner.
That Lombo line looks great again tonight. Good news.
Welcome back, Phaneuf. Where have you been?
he looked good the whole way through the slump, if you ask me. i hope that hit was legal.... he's gonna get boo'd for the rest of the night, to be sure.

i'm talkin' lombo, here....
"Pronger went after Phaneuf because he thought the hit was dirty."
Rich, rich irony.
hahahahaha oh, it's a shame you're not liveblogging tonight' the first game i'm at home for in ages...
Well, this is almost as good.
Wow, 5-1 for EDM. How deep does the Rabbit Hole go for the Canadiens?
The meltdown is epic over at Four Habs Fans. Best comment from the open thread:
Fuck Carbo, fuck his system, fuck our Defense, fuck it all to Satan's cockhole. Fuck Kovalev, fuck Komisarek, and fuck the guy that's obviously shooting loads of cum into Carey's eyes. And fuck Gainey too. Yeah, I said it. Fuck Gainey and his bullshit. Fuck him and his shitty trades and this pussy of a team he's put together. He should be at every practice skull fucking Carbo in front of the other players, telling them that they're next if they play as bad as Carbo coaches.... FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
Hilarious.
*ahem* when i said lombo was looking good, i meant offensively... he's havin' a bit of a tough game on D tonight....
Lombardi v. Getzlaf is a mis-match. The latter is a top 10 center in the league.
Iginla's first good play of the night, and it's a defensive one.
lookit that !!! an offensive zone penalty by bertuzzi !!!
guaranteed goal here, btw.
How incredibly rare! Next he'll be sending ill-advised back-hand passes across the ice!
Flames PK looks like garbage tonight.
Kent wrote:
he already did that, remember ? and everyone was all talking about what a beauty backhand pass it was to iggy (who didn't score) ??
Im still waiting for one at the offensive blueline. Or in our own zone.
fair enough...
Of all the shit these idiot refs have let go tonight, they call that a "hook".
Jesus H.
Hard to believe they make that call on Cammalleri when stuff like that - or worse - has been going on all night.
shhhh ! lost is on. ;)
Pffft. Lost. Talk about an appropriately titled show.
i wish boyd would do a cammalleri impression right about now...
poor poor gio.... totally not his fault once again....
Hard to believe this game is still tied.
An interference penalty?? On the DUCKS?? I can't believe it.
as in: we should be losing ??? i'm watching now... promise...
We should be losing, yes.
Wow . . . how long has it been since Kipper has been our best player?
Jesus Christ Kipper.
Ahh, well. Flames didn't deserve to win that anyways.
Ahh, apologies to Kiprusoff. Dion tipped that one in.
well, we did. so all is right in the world again.
one point is decent for that stinky one.
@ walkinvisible:
(that was in response to "we should be losing")
Flames gotta figure things out on the road. 40 shots on net again.
Doesn't help that the PP and first line are sink-holes.

No kiddin', Mr. Wilson. That Iginla-Bertuzzi pair hasn't worked all year, and the PP is starting to look as sclerotic as it did last year. Not optimal. Kiprusoff stole a point for them tonight, full stop.
Pretty much. The depth played alright too (Glencross/Bourque). I wonder Jarome is going to figure things out this season. He seems to be getting worse rather than better for him.
It might end up being a Jarmoe year like 05/06 for him, Kent. The Flames have had enough production from their foot soldiers and Cammalleri to mask his play, but they aren't going anywhere in the post-season without him operating at a high level.
It was good to see Phaneuf play a pretty good game. I thought he looked very good tonight and hopefully this will be a more consistent performance (although I do think more recently he has been a lot better). Iggy needs something and I cant figure out what. Your right him and Glencross are impersonating each other now. That being said happy to get the point, I fully expect they will respond tomorrow and hopefully finally give Mcelhinny the support he needs to get his first W.
Cheers
That's a tough one to drop but I agree with Brent that Dion looked more solid than the usual garbage he has brought to the dome this year.
Get ready Kings! The Flames appear to be semi ready for you!!
