polarsadness

Welcome to the first Game Day Fire Drill, for this, Calgary's 49th game of the season on Feb. 2, 2009.

They say that every story in a news paper needs what are called "The Five W's." These, of course, are simple enough to remember*:

  • Who
  • When
  • Where
  • What
  • Why

*except for Oilers fans, many of whom have "breathe in" written on their left hand and "breathe out" on the right, just in case they forget

So that's why every Game Day Fire Drill will consist of at least four of those W's. We cannot be counted upon to get to all of them. We're busy men with busy lives full of rocketship racing and caviar gambling and gold yachting. (Things of this nature, we assume, are what rich people do.)

Thus, here are your Five-ish W's for Feb. 2, 2009.

Who:

The Calgary Flames (30-14-4 for 64 points. Third in the West, first in the Northwest) and the Colorado Avalanche (23-26-1 for 47 points. Fourteenth in the West, fifth in the Northwest)

When:

7:30 p.m. Mountain time and 9:30 p.m. Eastern time. No other time zones matter.

Where:

Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado.

The Avalanche are 14-13-0 at home this season but have lost four in a row and five of their last six in Denver. Their last home win came against Calgary (because why wouldn't it?) on Jan. 18, by a 6-2 final.

Calgary is 1-1 in Denver this year. They won 1-0 on Nov. 20 behind an 18-save shutout for Miikka Kiprusoff.

What (to hate about the Avs):

Cody McLeod — Has two goals against Calgary this year.

Ryan Smyth — Obvious.

Darcy Tucker — Douchebag.

Milan Hejduk — Had a goal and an assist against the Flames in their last game.

Tony Granato — Seems like a wiener/his sister is better than him at hockey.

Why:

Why not? Feel free to blather amongst yourselves in the comments section!

BTW, is that an Edmonton Oilers fan in the picture, either hanging their head in shame, or trying to drown themselves after another lose?

Looks like Dustin Penner to me.

I don't know... I think Penner's butt is bigger. And that bear's showing more signs of life.

Game's underway and Mark Giordano just fought Ian Laperriere in one of the less interesting scraps you'll ever see.

Gio's head is big. He could use it as a weapon.

This paragraph shows some promise. You may interest us yet in some very minor fashion.

@ FlamesFanInETown

Come on, you might be a f-Lames fan, but as an Edmontontonian you should at least represent a bit better. You meant to say "loss" rather than "lose". Way to be, Webster.
