Trade Deadline Thoughts

trade

We have been sent a good many texts, twitters, emails, carrier pigeons and telegrams with different trade scenarios that people would like to see or believe are imminent. Keep 'em coming Nation. With the sheer volume of trade predictions being thrown around someone is bound to be right sooner or later and they will be celebrated for seasons to come as being 'the person who knew.' How sweet is that going to be?

Regardless of the deal the Oil eventually make, there is one thing for certain:

The player(s) coming back are going to have a ton of pressure placed upon them on arrival Chez Oil.

This is obviously going to depend on the player(s) the Oil acquire. Trade Kyle Brodziak for some plugger and expectations will be diminished. But package up a few players in the vaunted 3-for-1 deal that everyone is hoping for and that 1 coming to Edmonton had better have his skates sharpened, stick taped and be ready to go. Remember when Samsonov was traded to the Oil back in '06? Remember how awesome we all thought he was? Now imagine someone of note – Jokinen, Bouwmeester or (insert player of note here) – gets dealt to the rabid OilersNation at the deadline. Get ready to have some expectations placed upon thee buster!

All year the OilersNation have sat and waited for something to happen. A trade of some fashion. A firing perhaps. Calling up junior phenoms of yore. Anything that could result in the needed boost on the ice and in the dressing room and put this team into a solid playoff position. Hundreds of thousands of hard core Oilers Fans, millions of casual acquaintances, billions of band wagon jumpers. All waiting for the news that something has happened.

As our own Robin Brownlee would note:

Tick, tick, tick……

As an aside

detroit_decay

For those of you who subscribe to the theory that the Oilers are screwed because NHL players don’t want to earn a living in Edmonton on account of it being a crap hole, we offer you the following information on Detroit. Long able to cobble together a contending team year after year – the Wings are able to remain in the upper echelons of the league despite the notable fact that Detroit is screwed.

How screwed you ask?

The median price of a home sold in Detroit in December was $7,500. There are no zeroes intentionally missing from that statement nor is it a typo. $7,500 buys you a home in Detroit - complete with walls, a window or two and a door. Now we aren't exactly part of the ReMax Elite Team, but you don't need to be a real estate agent to know that isn't a good sign for an economy.

Other depressing facts about Detroit include:

  • One-third of the population and almost 50 percent of children live in poverty.
  • Median household income has dropped 24 percent since 2000, according to the Census Bureau.

Detroit, which has lost half its population in the past 50 years, is deceptively large, covering 139 square miles. Manhattan, San Francisco and Boston could, as a group, fit inside the city's boundaries. There is no major grocery chain in the city, and only two movie theaters. Much of the neighborhood economy revolves around rib joints, hot dog stands and liquor stores.”

Now before you regale us with tales of how most of the monied folk in Detroit live in Auburn Hills or other suburban enclaves please remember that Joe Louis Arena is smack dab in the middle of the urban action in Detroit and not tucked away in the ‘burbs. Zetterberg drives through some of the most depressing urban decay in all of North America on the way into work every morning – and he is there long term Nation. Why? Not because of the scenery. Because the Wings win and are a completely functional franchise.

On a positive note, Detroit's homicide rate dropped 14 percent last year. That prompted mayoral candidate Stanley Christmas to tell the Detroit News recently, "I don't mean to be sarcastic, but there just isn't anyone left to kill."

You will forgive us if we don’t buy the load of crap that a cold city can’t have a good hockey team. If Detroit can do it anyone should be able to ice a winner.

Poor Detroit.

LA has ooddles of cap space.... http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=LAK&season=0809

But given the fact that Anschultz is in the tank financially (AEG) this is by design - LOWE would have to present additional picks to sweeten the cap shuffle.

You know how when everyone went on and on about how MacT needed to be fired, and Wanye invented the FMNF thing so that everyone could just write that quickly and save everyone a lot of time and energy in having to read it and write it over and over again?

Deep Oil has all of three main thoughts:

1) Every hockey player in the world hates Edmonton, including the ones that live here. We should feel privileged if so much as a Peewee deigns to play here.

2) Darryl Katz is either broke, a puppet for a top secret organization, or the head of an evil conspiracy movement, as evidenced by his unwillingness to discuss the Edmonton Oilers with the media as often as Craig MacTavish.

3) Allan Watt is the root of all evil in the world. Untold millions suffer daily in the misery that this man's hands have caused.

Can we not just come up with some similar string of letters for Deep Oil to use when he wants to express these, to spare him the trouble of typing and us the misery of having to skim past them? And maybe one more set of letters like R.A.T. for 'Random Assinine Thought' when he feels the need to show us how 'informed' he is? Just a suggestion . . .

How about 1,2,3

1) Due to management and on ice performance issues SOME players wish to leave, sign here for inflated UFA money as mercenaries or avoid a boatload of money to live in a warzone called DETROIT>

2) Katz is an LBO operator - the new economic climate has closed most traditional financing avenues - Katz is on his own - LOST on a islande with Mckesson being his liferaft - not a secret.

3) Oiler control over media and it's brand is 1984'ish The Rush cannot even get access to the government paid media centre - the 3 million locker room upgrade did not come from the oil's bank account - government money via Northlands - via EIG.

Just how is it that The Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) is in any kind of financial trouble whatsoever..?

There is a BIG difference between the AEG & the AEGON. They are 2 completely different companies altogether.

Philip Anschultz holdings are more than stable (to say the least) currently. While he's always be a guy with deep pockets & short arms when it comes ot the Kings, his companies are more than capable of holding their own in these economic times.

@ Deep Oil: I'm not trying to be a ball-breaker here, DeepOil, but I think you need to start spending a bit of time on the coherence and quality of your comments. I'm certain you have something relevant to say, but you seem to just fire these off without reviewing them, and then you hammer "post comment." Your comments come off as nonsensical rants, which do nothing to elevate the debate.

Slow down, take the time to compose your arguments, and calm down, man! It's about the quality of your comments, not the quantity of them

ignore the loony give some insight come on. I just feel like colby would be like adding another horcoff to the top line. A good two-way player that would be a very good second or third line player but not quite the skill we want to see playing with hemsky

I would take Armstrong in a heartbeat but not as a guy to play with Hemsky.

In fact I think he is a RWer, no?

Now if the Oilers had a deal on the table to move Cole and then pick up Armstrong, I would be all over that.

He's listed as a RW on the roster, but he could be one of those guys who swings both ways.

It doesn't matter though; no way does Atlanta make that deal. Cole and Armstrong have identical numbers this season and both are free agents this summer, but Armstrong is a restricted and makes $2.8M less. Who do you think Atlanta would want?

I didn't mean Cole for Armstrong, I just meant that if Edmonton had a deal on the table for Cole, such as Ruutu like Brownlee suggested and then could make a separate deal for Armstrong to play in Cole's spot I would do it.

What would it take to get Armstrong is anyone's guess but considering the position Atlanta is in I suspect they are looking for futures more than anything else.

The newspaper was wrong. And it's pretty sloppy for a New York newspaper to screw up something so elemental about their own team.

I said you were either making it up or the paper was stupid - I suppose wrong would have been a better word. You provided the link (which I read, as I stated above).

The newspaper was wrong. It called Avery and Naslund "former teammates" which they were not. Naslund's first season in New York was this one - it's common knowledge. You can't believe everything you read, even in the NY Post, Deep Oil.

And I have absolutely no qualms about deleting your comments if you want to incoherently attack me every time you talk. We (myself, Wanye, Bingofuel, etc.) have let a lot of stuff go because this isn't supposed to be the kind of site where people can't speak their mind, and you've been given close to free rein - even when your comments are barely coherent.

I have no idea what you're actually angry at me for; you posted the link so it's obvious it was the newspaper which was mistaken in it's assertion. No harm done, and no reason for either you or I to feel bad.

Deep Oil:

This is the quote from the Post story:

He tried to make up for lost time at Bungalow 8, flirting with women and hanging with former teammates Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Nigel Dawes and Marcus Nasland.

Avery may well have been hanging out with those four - I'm not accusing the Post of lying. But when they describe Naslund as a former teammate of Avery, they are mistaken.

Is that clear?

Fun facts. Kozlov turned 35 years old May 3, 2007. He celebrated by signing a three year 11 million dollar contract with Atlanta. If he were to be traded to Edmonton; and chose to retire; the Oilers would be on the hook for a 3.67 million dollar cap hit. On the other hand, Kozlov is an experienced first line L.W. player with 54pts so far this season. Worth the risk? What would be fair compensation to Atlanta?
