Waiver Wire Players (Updated)

All sorts of players have hit the waiver wire this morning, including some high profile types. Let’s go through the list (as per TSN).
Miroslav Satan
Contract: $3.5 million for this season, pending UFA Current Season Stats: 64GP – 17G – 19A – 36PTS, +3 Advanced Stats: QC-5th, QT-8th, Corsi/60-6th, PTS/60- 1.74
This is a little bizarre, and given that Satan’s contract is expiring I imagine that he’ll be claimed (possibly even by the Oilers). He’s fallen a long ways from his pre-lockout heyday, but he’s still been a decent scorer in Pittsburgh this season, and he isn’t getting lit up against top opponents. The only way I can see this deal making sense for Pittsburgh is if they have an impact player coming in and need to clear salary.
UPDATED: According to Matheson, the Oilers have no interest in Miroslav Satan. Matheson says it's unlikely that any team is willing to pay him the 900K remaining on his contract given his meager 17 goal output this season. Matheson's obviously very connected, so there's little doubt that he's right about the Oilers, but I think there must be a team with interest - after all, Bill Guerin has teams chasing him despite his very similar production.
Brendan Morrison
Contract: $2.75 million for this season, pending UFA Current Season Stats: 61GP – 10G – 12A – 22PTS, EV Advanced Stats: QC-10th, QT-7th, Corsi/60-7th, PTS/60- 1.37
It’s been an awful season for Morrison. He’s hovered between 50 and 70 points since 2000, and he’s dropped off the face of the Earth offensively this season. His even-strength production is only down a middle, but Morrison’s powerplay production (he was once a specialist with the man advantage) has disappeared this year. I don’t think it’s farfetched that he could rebound, and he may be of use to a team that misses out on their desired target at the deadline. Presumably the Ducks are clearing cap space for a trade.
Gary Roberts
Contract: $2.4 million for this season, pending UFA Current Season Stats: 30GP – 4G – 3A – 7PTS, -11 Advanced Stats: QC-10th, QT-13th, Corsi/60-13th, PTS/60- 0.63
I could see Roberts being of interest to a team looking for some veteran savvy, but the fact of the matter is that he’s had a miserable season. He’s been a 4th-liner and he’s getting heavily outscored; there were rumours that the Flames might like to see him join them for a playoff run. Still, I’d imagine whoever picks him up will want to send some salary the other way.
Other players on waivers include Martin Gerber, Aaron Voros, Erik Reitz, Brendan Bell, Eric Perrin, Craig Adams, and Jon Sim. Beyond Voros, I have trouble seeing any of those players being of much interest.

That meager output would tie him for 2nd on this team. Yeah he might not be our first choice but at 900k is he really a worse option than 85 on the top line?

Again I think that deal would be done in seconds as long as the prospect isn't Eberle or Nash.
"According to Matheson, the Oilers have no interest in Miroslav Satan." Thank god for that. As for the issue of 85 on the top line - i am not opposed to MacT placing him there against Minnesota. He looked very good with Hemsky and Horcoff and was arguably our best player in that game - hence the ton of minutes it seemed like he played. While of course placing him on the top line is not a solution - i have no problem with MacT's decision Saturday night to put him there. And if he plays like that again - I'd sooner see him there than Nilsson or Penner (unless he decides to actually play that night). There is no doubt though that we need a top LW...
oops, only top line supposed to be italicized.
I'd send Nash packing, no question.

Thanks I guess he can play both wings that would be a great pickup but it will never happen, they would want a ton for the guy.

NO KIDDING - why would you wait on a 'prospect' who hasn't played 1 game yet. Boston rumours state Colborne is on the block w/o playing a game.
I would trade him to get a proven player, but I don't think that would be much of a stumbling block to get a goal scorer. Nash is a 2 way centre man, not a 30 goal scorer.
I totally agree with you, get rid of prospects, not the young players on the team.
I could part with (3 of the 5) Schremp, Horcoff, Penner, Gilbert or Nilsson and a second round pick for Kovalchuk. I would keep Cogs. He will be very good in the future. For Frolov, I would give up 2 of the 5 mentioned above and maybe a 4th rounder. I say go for the gusto and get Kovalchuk to play with Hemsky and we will be a formidable team for 5 years or more and maybe 1 or 2 Stanleys...

Kovalchuk + Hemsky = 1 or 2 stanleys?
If only it was that simple.

Hahahaha...dreaming a bit?
meager 17 goal output this season?????
Wouldn't that make him second on the Oilers in scoring? A meager 17 goals would be nice addition to a team that can't score.
Frolov is exactly like Kovalchuk, they are both Right Handed shots that play Left Wing.
Frolov has had a few cups of coffee on the right side of the sheet, but he's a True Left Winger 1st & foremost.
He's not that fleet of foot, but he sees the ice very well & always seems to find that open spot in the opposing teams end & the puck just finds itself on his stick more often than not. He's got a lot of Lucky Luc in his game in the red zone.
He's wildly streaky, but when he's on, he's Bang-On !!!
Turned his defensive game around 180' with Terry Murray this year & even gets more SH TOI than Stoll does.
I think he would be a great fit on the Oilers Top line, plus his future salary would really help the Oil fill some much needed holes in other areas when the time comes.
It likely won't happen, but he's a great fit in more ways than 1...

You have to remember that those 17 goals came playing with Crosby or Malkin, so it is a little meager.
Frolov isnt coming to Edmonton people.
Get over it.
What is Oilernation planning on doing for the deadline tommorow? I think we should have 1 blog that can be updated by the writers of the site with no comments allowed, kind of like Willis' Jagr blog which got updated as the day went along. Then another blog for comments etc. If we have 1 big blog its going to be a headache reading through it all. What do you guys think?
^^^^^
Just watch tsn.ca
Oh, that Burke and Lowe didn't hate each other. I would love to see Dominic Moore on the Oil. He brings a lot of the heart we are missing currently.
Are Robin and Jason planning on updating tsn.ca?
There will be one blog post mirrored on both sites, with all Nation writers contributing to it throughout the day. Writers will timecode their updates so it's easier to follow. Comments will be open.

Not that it matters... but, how do you know he is not? Anything can happen and as highly unlikely as it is... stranger things have happened. So, I fail to see why you need to state something definative like "he is not coming here, get over it" when, I can gurantee that you have no clue what kind of deals are in the works.
For the record, I don't believe it is a deal that would happen. I don't have enough faith in the Oilers management group anymore.

We'll know by tomorrow if our Frolov soggy dream comes true... but emphasis on the dream part, it's not highly likely.
@ Q:
That's why we went and got us a Tambo. Problem solved, right? Right . . . ?
@Ender the Dragon
Ohhh, my head, my head .....
Also for SIRIUS subscribers, they start broadcasting at 10am on SIRIUS 97, and then at 2pm on 122.
Frolov's such a bargain for this year and next that there would be no reason for people to throw out his name unless it was 100% legit.
I don't expect Lombardi to come out and advertise it but there seems to be something there and it sorta makes sense if Lombardi doesn't believe in him long-term or doesn't believe he'll sign for 2011 and beyond.

Cool. thanks for the update.
@ Travis Dakin:
Well the link I posted said Frolov isnt going anywhere.
I think hes more connected than both of us.
@ Jason Gregor: I think it is because of Pouliot's work ethic against the Wild the other night. He was playing like there was a fire lit under him.
Just another mystery Mact move. Havent we been doubting his lineup all year now? Nothing suprising at all.
What happened to Nillson and his scoring 7 points in 6 games a couple of weeks ago?
Has it been posted that Matheson already reported the oilers are not going to take a chance on Satan?
Anyways its in faceoff.com and confirmed they are the least bit intrested.
Jonathon stroke 1 off the list.
Maybe they are trying to showcase Reddox for the deadline LOL!
@ CurtisS:
Underneath Satan's name there's a paragraph labelled update, which links to the Matheson story.
Yup nothing frustrating about that lineup.
A team that can't score in a whore house is gonna sit the only guy with offensive instincts so they can play Reddox on the top line and chicken man on the second.
It's getting tougher and tougher to defend MacTavish.
@ Jonathan Willis:
Thats twice today i posted without reading above.
Anyways the more people pointing things out the better. IMO.
Nobody is stupid enough to pickup REDDOX...REDDOX on a first line....OMG I'm fk%^$ furious...scratch MacT please!!!!
Maybe the Oilers are shopping Nilsson, like the Islanders Guerin and are sitting him out. Antropov and Moore are sitting for Toronto.
Who knows, but at least that would make sense why he is out and Pouliot is in.
I think 12's done enough that he shouldn't be taking the HS for the second game in a row; I also thought that 78 shouldn't have take the pipe for four games in a row, either.
The benching seemed to have worked because 78 was busting his ass on Sat night but for my money you'd see 22 sitting and 12 back with 89-26.
27-10-83 12-89-26 85-13-34 78-51-46
I like JFJ but he'll never have a spot here until we move out some deadwood and/or guys like 78 prove they can be top niners.
Which is unlikely to happen.
Those lines look unbalanced but 13 has a long way to go before he proves he's a pivot. The best move - failing getting a vet pivot which the Oil didn't seem to consider - would've been to play 51-78 down the middle in the last two spots and let them play there until they proved they couldn't handle it.
I'm a MacT guy but 78 plays centre his whole career and plays a tough min role with 19-34 for ~25 games but then all of a sudden he's not a defensive line guy and he can't play centre.
Whatever.
But, ****, let's allow 13 to lose 50 draws a game!:)
The point is that we're unbalanced and 13 isn't a centre.
@ Dennis: Mact said a couple weeks ago Re MAP
"Hes a young kid with a nice skill set. He just has to figure out what his role is in the NHL"
Now call me crazy but isnt the coach suppose to assign you with a Role? Is it for this reason why MAP isnt working out so far?
Jason Gregor wrote:
The flip side of that is the Oilers and MacT's job more specifically are under all sorts of pressure to make the playoffs and can't afford to give away two points.
Based on that, there is no way I can see MacT not icing what he thinks is the best possible line up for the night...but that is just me.
If they're not shopping Nilsson then it sure says a lot of what the Oilers think of him when he gets scratched for two huge games against teams you're fighting for the playoffs. When Pouliot is your pick over Nilsson something stinks.
MacT wants to save his job, Katz wants his team to make the playoffs and Tambo would like to go to a team where he's not part of a puppet regime.
So, yeah, hard to believe you're not icing your best with just 20 games remaining Unless something's afoot.
So, gregor could be on that 12's on his way out.
Hopefully, it's for a two-way D that's affordable next year and can replace 24; who should be moved this summer.
im hearing gagner eberle 1st and 3rd for havlat and seabrook
Rick wrote:
What if the one questionable guy you ice tonight ensures that you can ice a much better guy for the next 20 games and the postseason?
If Nilsson is trade bait for someone good, no way do they jeoprodize that by putting him at risk tonight.
@ willy fisterbotom:
Im hearing Gagner, Penner, and 2 7th round draft pics for Vincent Lecavillier too! Maybe we have the same source from ward 14 at Alberta Hospital?
Ender the Dragon wrote:
How good of a player can you really expect back if Nilsson is the key piece of the puzzle that you need to protect? Further to that, what player from another team is being sat tonight that represents such a great improvement? Surely any deal wouldn't hinge on the Oilers resting a player and the other team not resting theirs. Between the games tonight and the game last night that's 26 teams, odds are any deal on the table includes a team that is icing a team tonight or iced one last night.
Either way I see disappointment coming down the road. Either MacT has had the cheese slip off his cracker and he truly thinks they have a better offence with Nilsson riding the pine and chicken man in the line up or the biggest trade the Oilers have line up includes Nilsson as the center piece to the deal.
Either way....oh joy.
@ willy fisterbotom: Quite the byline there lol
@ Jack "FMNF" Bauer: we'll see

Why not make lines 3 &4:
3: 51-13-34 (Brodziak takes draws, cogs plays centre otherwise)
4:85-78-46
Brodziak could use some better line mates and line 3 could win some more draws, line 4 doesn't lose a whole lot.
