Let the games begin...

ryan-clowe

Trade talk is heating up, and based on some phone conversation I had this morning, trades might trump the draft tomorrow.

Darren Dreger reported this morning that the Sharks are looking at moving Ryane Clowe.

Clowe turns 27 in September and tallied 22 goals and 52 points last year. He has the size to be and hands to be considered a true power forward.

He’s an RFA, and with the salary cap going down next year, I highly doubt he’ll get a Penner-like offer from a team to try and get him.

I spoke with a western-based NHL scout a minute ago and here’s what he said, “Clowe is tough and gritty, but he scored half his goals on the powerplay. Their powerplay was one of the best in the league. I like him as a player, but I’m hesitant to think he’d be a 30-goal man on teams with less skill.”

It is an interesting point. Eleven of Clowe’s goals came on the PP last year. The Sharks were 3rd in the league on the PP and Clowe averaged over three minutes a game. There is nothing wrong with being a powerplay producer, in fact it is very important, but how good is Clowe.

His size would benefit the Oilers for sure and he’d got ample PP time. But is he worth $3.5 million or more? I’ll bet that’s what it will take to get him signed.

Clowe is like a cheaper, tougher Penner. Hopefully the Oil look a lot different 4 days from now.

Not a first liner, so no thanks. This team has an abundance of "good" players, so much so that it affects the roles of the bottom two lines, when you have "skill" guys in grit forward positions.

Gregor Clowe is something the Oilers need but with the Tootoo trade for Nilsson flying around Tambi better come home with something more than Clowe or Tootoo. They need to fix the 1st line LW problem that's been here for a while now. We are waisting that sweetheart contract for Hemmer, he looks like a guy that is screeming for someone to play with and next time around we won't get a brake on his contract.

I agree he isn't a true first liner, but he'd be a great second liner. Tough and can score, but if he wants $3.5 to $4.0 million no thanks.

I read that San Jose asked for Hartnell in return. That doesn't make sense, with his $4 million salary, unless they are planning to dump Marleau.

This seems almost as exciting as trade deadline...I can't wait..Is there a Nation party tomorrow anywhere??

Nice that he is left winger, but where does he fit? Kinda hard too justify getting another player that could turn out like Penner. I think Tambo will look for more proven guys.

What you hear on Tootoo for Nilsson.

@ swany:

I'd agree that Clowe doesn't fill one of the two glaring voids on this team; Goal scorer and goalie, but you still need to add other pieces, and at the right price he'd be a great fit.

I know that Minny really wants Heatley, but the Oilers seem to be in the mix. I still sense that RIGHT NOW they aren't the front runner, but with trades that could change tomorrow. I've been told that he'd come to Edmonton, but it isn't his first choice. Which I get since it's not like the Oilers have shown they are one good player away from being a true contender. It will be interesting to watch. Once I get to Montreal it will be easier to read guys because I'll talk to some of them face to face.

Right now it seems the rumours are hotter than even the trade deadline, which is interesting. I don't know if GM's are more tight lipped then, or if other people within teams are talking, but it sure sounds like there are lots of players/teams talking.

@ Jason Gregor:

I can't seem to shake this feeling that the Oilers are cooking something up that will come out of left field. Now that everyone's focusing on Heatley, all of a sudden there's not so much attention on Lecavalier, for example. I honestly don't see Heatley coming here because we are still feeling the effects of Pronger's exit 3 years ago.

P.S. I told my wife I was going to spend the weekend following the draft, and she just said "Jon and Kate is over so do whatever the hell you want". Hope you have fun out there.

On Clowe I agree completly but we can't just keep adding sooner or later we will have to dump some money, I think they need to go after the BIGGEST holes we have and as you mentioned a Goalie ans a LW sniper. I still say it's got to be Heatley just because we move out salary and then can add a guy like Clowe (any way they take Penner) HAHAHA

I'm going to my gf place now, but told her I was gonna leave tomorrow afternoon (coincidentally enough around the same time she's gonna be babysitting her sisters 4 kids) and could just sense the tension (lol). I don't know if I should tell her its hockey/draft related or if I should make up a better excuse. Its possible she'll understand... right? Right? Oh shi... :'-(

I'm glad there isn't the usually overwhelming "OMG WE NEED HIM!!!" posts that follow any name being mentioned as on the market, because I've long since felt that Clowe was very overrated around the various blogs and message boards. I only hope Tabellini isn't blinded by his intentions to get bigger to see that by trading for Clowe, you're looking at a less effective version of Penner for close to the same money.

I just got word it doesn't look like the NHL will give the teams the salary cap for next season before the draft. If that indeed is the case, it's ridiculous.

It looks like the cap won't change a lot, but even if it is one or two million that could limit the moves some teams make.

It makes no sense to not give the teams the CAP FIGURE before the draft...

I've said it all along that the Oilers don't want to trade their 10th pick away, unless it means moving up. They want to draft a player in the first round for sure.

Here is what I know on Heatley, from a good source. I haven't spoke to Rish yet, but I will when I land.

Heatley might have no choice really. If the Sens pay him that 4 million on July 1st I think Murray might just say show up, or you get suspended.

The Oilers are interested, but are doing an extensive background check to make sure there aren't more issues at stake here. It would be a huge investment to get him, both player wise and financially so they want to know what they are getting into.

Chuck Fletcher and the Wild are right there in the mix. They want to change the face of their team, and bringing him in would show their fans the days of boring WILD hockey is over.

I'm off to the airport...if I hear anything before my flight leaves I'll send it in, otherwise updates coming tomorrow morning or late tonight after some meetings with people.

1. Edmonton is a team that has, arguably, less skill. 2. Kotalik was a big powerplay producer, and my guess is signing Kotalik at his 3 million neighbourhood price will be cheaper than Clowe coming off a career year as an RFA. 3. Clowe has 4 years on Kotalik, in terms of age, but Kotalik has 4 years on Clowe in terms of NHL experience.

I'm leaning towards resigning Kotalik.

As much as I would love to see Heatley in Edmonton, I would much rather see him get stuck in Ottawa. Murray could establish a good precedent with all the other prima donna's in the league if he were to follow through with the suspension.
