Head-to-head ice time.

Flames were the better team in the first period, mostly on the back of the third line and the PP, but the ice started to tilt after that. The Red Wings took over after that and a bad Jokinen play + plus a lucky bounce sealed the deal for them.

Some finish from CGY in the first and this is a different story, so it certainly wasn't a terrible game overall. That said, the top end was either completely stifled (Iginla, Tanguay) or killed (Jokinen line) as predicted in the pre-game posts and one can only expect a third unit to drive things for so long.

I don't know. He didn't seem that bad to me, but it didn't go his way tonight.

Sounds like he played with Joker/Hagman tonight at EV, and when you ride with Jokinen against anyone but the stiffs, your numbers might suffer on occasion. I wonder if Sutter should have trusted GlenX/Backlund/Bourque enough to leave them together and let them play against Franzen and company?

The combination of playing with Tanguay and not with Jokinen seems to be really helping Iginla's SC numbers.

To play 10 mins of EV time against Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Lidstrom and come out even is a pretty darn good performance.

A sign of things to come? Perhaps

I was not one of the "DONT BRING JOKINEN BACK YOU FOOL" crowd - I guess I stand corrected.

In retrospect, yeah.

Jokinen didn't see much action in the third after the Franzen goal if I recall. He was a disaster all night.

When Moss gets healthy, and presuming they keep this experiment of using him at center on the go, I'm thinking he, GlenX and Bourque might get a shot at the toughs every now and then, and keep Joker for third lines only. I don't doubt that Olli will score a few goals at some point, based on the "blind squirrel" theory if nothing else, but since a) he's going to play no matter what I think of him, and b) he's not very good, he needs to be used in the easiest circumstances possible.

One wonders if the current regime will ever really come to grips with that though. I mean, Jokinen was a third liner when he left here the last time, so it's not like it's impossible...but man, you'd have though they would have learned their lesson and, you know, not re-signed him and put him back with Iginla to start the year.

Yup. Could have signed Dominic Moore for a third of the money if the team wanted a third line center, and gotten one that might not piss us off every night. Two more years with a NMC. Christ on a cracker.

As was discussed on the pre-game thread; their big guns outgunned our big guns more than our bottom 6'ers could compensate for.

@Kent Wilson

I agree with Kent about Iggy. I love the guy and I will often give him the benefit of the doubt but he isn't even close to the player he was 2-3 years ago. I notice he is going more to the perimeter to take shots and he isn't able to muscle his way in to the front of the net anymore (at least against a good defense). He seems so much thinner than he has in the past. Anyone think that it could be part of the problem since he is supposed to be a power forward?

I heard somewhere (Fan 960?) that Iginla lost 5 or so pounds over the summer to help with his speed.

Sad that the Jokinen line got to play a bunch of minutes against Bertuzzi but couldn't capitalize on his weak defensive skills.

Incidentally, thanks for introducing the Head to Head data to me. Never knew it existed.

Yup, thanks Kent. The Scoring Chance data is the first thing I look for after the games now.

On that note, I went to ON last night for sh*ts & giggles and they didn't even have a post game report, no blogs or anything? So I appreciate all the work you, Steinberg and the rest are doing pregame but also late into the night post game for all of us night owls.
