Game No. 16: Theme from Jaws

Ryan Lambert
November 13 2010 06:47PM

Last night was ugly, tonight could be a whole lot worse.

I swear I've been trying to dial back the negativity lately. But what was there to like about last night's game? That we're-really-hoping-Jarome-turns-it-around-soon train is primed to go screaming out of the station any day now, and he's got the stats to back it up, especially on that dreadful Friday night in Phoenix.

A minus-4? He and his linemates got completely bossed, and Calgary gave up five to a team that hadn't scored that many in a single game all year. Worse, they conceded a hattie to Vernon Fiddler. I don't know how much worse it can get.

But tonight we may just find out. There's no way to sugarcoat this: playing at San Jose, where the Sharks have 23 goals in seven games in spite of looking poor offensively, is perhaps not the cure-all Calgary needs right now. And add in that it's the second half of an all-road back-to-back? It could get ugly, especially considering it'll be Miikka Kiprusoff in net for this one as well.

There is good news though. San Jose sucks at defense. At least so far this year. When Antti Niemi is in net. And guess who goes tonight for the Sharks! If there's any goalie in the league right now that can help the Flames' top players snap out of this season-long slump, it's the guy with a 3.90 GAA and the .872 save percentage.

Of course, what it says about the Flames' current form that Todd McLellan would feel comfortable rolling him tonight, I leave to you to interpret.

And now a new feature for the game threads: Guess the Iginla Output.

Put me down for a secondary assist on the power play and a minus-2.

he will be looking to shoot a lot more tonight. I hope a Sutter brought up to him that Moss had 8 more shots than him. Unacceptable!! Predict though that more of his shots tonight will fly over the net.

Btw...I'm sick of seeing Backlund out there. He is a constant reminder of Daz' shortcomings as a GM on many different levels. Why is he even in the NHL right now? Is it in Daz' interest to further screw the franchise's future? Oh yeah...that's right he has no other choice but to dress the kid.

if bret sutter likes to slam milskey's and punch people in the face i hope he is slamming them right now and in the first int punches most of this team in the face. yes this is offensive but not near as offensive as the brutal play by this team. milskey! milskey!

NO. Im just not a fan or mortgaging the team's future on a pointless and lame duck season. Daz should of been canned last season. Playing in the NHL now does no good for this kid. He's two years removed from playing D2 Swedish hockey and they are essentially stunting his growth.

That's why I'm pissed. A prospect that shouldn't be in the league is playing better than the Flames' top line. That is pathetic. That's why I say that seeing Backlund out there is just a constant reminder of Daz' shortcomings on so many different levels.

I disagree. They're not using him against the big boys for the most part, and the competition he's currently facing looks like it's enough to provide a strong challenge without smothering him.

@KingJafi

You know, I've come around on Backlund. He's holding his own at least.

Frankly, Sutter's true failings are scattered elsehwere throughout the roster (and, at time, in the pressbox). They are much greater than Backlund playing this year.

At this point and as bad as this team is, I don't think they have the luxury to experiment with a prospect like that. That's my two cents.

Wasn't the Phaneuf trade only a couple of games after the spanking we were handed by the sharks last year?

Yikes.

We had like 3 2 on 1's in the first, they gotta bury one of those.

Chances were 9-8 in favor of the Flames. Better, although consider the fact they got some PP's and were chasing in that one.

CGY -8, EV Shots 17-10 SJ, 10-6 in the period. Any line facing Pavelski is in trouble, and that's mostly been Joker's line w/Reggie and White.

If the game stays the way it seems to be going, do we here B. Sutter, Jerome, Reg ect., say that yeah we played well but just deserved a better outcome? I'm sick of that answer. When is the organization going to realize that maybe this team is just not good enough? I don't know what the direction of the team should be though.

I know this horse has been beat to death already but I'll ask it anyway. Would the Flames not be better off trading Iginla, Regher, Kipper, for draft picks and/or young speedy forwards? I think the win/loss results would be similar. The team's budget may be less, saving them money, and maybe it may be a more hungry/quicker team to watch.
