Breaking News: Flames trade Brett Sutter and Ian White to CAR

PHILADELPHIA - NOVEMBER 01: Anton Babchuk of the Carolina Hurricanes skates against the Philadelphia Flyers on November 1, 2010 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Flyers defeat the Hurricanes 3-2. (Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images)

According to twitter reports, Sutter and White have been dealt to Carolina for Anton Babchuk and Tom Kostopolous.

Like White, Babchuk is an offensive minded rearguard who can sometimes have adventures in his own end. Kostopolous is an established NHLer, albeit a rather limited one. He adds to the log-jam of 3rd and 4th liners on the Flames bottm-end.

I don't know how this effects the team on the ice (if at all), but the best news is the Flames save about $1M in cap space.

More detailed analysis later.

How many times is Darryl going to shoot himself in the dick before someone fires him?

Typical Darryl trade:

-Take the shitty return from his last useless trade and get equally shitty return for it.

-Give up youth (potential) for experience (someone over 30)

-Give up top of the roster for bottom of the roster and call it "depth"

-Involve his family. Now Brett gets to play with Brandon.

The only unexpected part of this trade is that we dumped salary. I wonder how Darryl will waste the $1M he just made. If its to bring up Kotalik I might throw up.

w, terrible asset managment by the Flames. The Leafs fed White favourable zone starts last year, inflating both his boxcars and other underlyings. This made his trade value high enough to allow the Leafs to get a franchise player, captain, and true leader in Dion Phaneuf. On the other hand, the Flames buried White, making him look awful, and exposing him for the true fruad he really is.I said it the first time White was traded and will say it again: Gilmour trade part II.

Well, they are dirt cheap, and White has struggled this year.

Not really surprised at this point in time, but I know nothing of the underlying stats.

Is he a centre? If so, Conroy may have played his last game.

Seriously though. Good stuff, disliked White from the moment he arrived. Plus shot, good little guy that you'd root for but his stats outpaced his ability

White is gone, that should make Kiprusoff smile. He was terrible in the defensive zone.

However, Babchuk looks to me like a pretty throw-away defender with a heavy shot. He's cheap, so that's good.

My question is, do the Flames need another 5th, 6th defender and third/fourth line forward?

White and Babchuk are practically the same player but with Babchuk being as soft as Bouwmeester and cheaper.

Kipper may not be so happy when all is said and done.

Up side is the cap hit for Babchuk is $1.4M and he is a UFA after this year. Salary dump?

Babchuk is great on the PP, very offensive minded Dman.

Don't know why Kostopolous though, we don't need another 4th liner.

...Kostopolus is right wing. Maybe one of our right wingers is on the move (Iggy?).

Borque Moss Kostopolus Jackman Kotalik

...pretty even trade on paper, although I've never seen Babchuk play. First round choice, 26 years old, 6'4 220lbs. Salary dump to make room for Kotalik? If Kotalik stays one of our centres gets traded or Backlund gets sent down.

Question - was 1.8Mil more cap space needed to let Kotalik back in the lineup?

Nah. White's contract was done after this year too. About 1.2 mil savings, as White's already earned about 400k this year.

Seems like Kostopoulos is Nystrom replacement with experience? Babchuk...dunno. I'm thinking moving dollars, as likely Lanks isn't coming back....or is he, and they need the space?

Shaping things up for:

First (T-S-I) Second (Gx-J-R) Third (Hagman-Blacklund-Moss?) Forth (Kost. - Morrison/Conroy? - Jackman/Kotalik?)

Morrison/Meyer?

Jeez....I dunno...

...just watched a Babchuk goal reel from 08-09 on youtube. Of his 16 goals, 13 were one timers from the top of the circle. Heavy shot. Maybe he can gain the zone on the PP as well as having the heavy shot :(

White has been terrible this year and is expensive. 2 assists for an "offensive" defenseman is not cutting it. His +/- is also brutal. He seemed like a much better player last year?

Babchuk is pretty much a PP guy with a big right handed point shot. He is also a LOT bigger than White at 6'5" and 212 lb.

Glad to see that Brett Sutter gets to go play with Brandon. Hopefully this lets him get some regular NHL minutes.

You've got to be kidding? When i heard of a trade, i listened. Sutter gone, probably the best for him. But White? I know that he probably wouldnt resign here and has struggled but he has a lot of potential. Trading 2 pluggers for 2 pluggers but again another lopsided trade. Hopefully next trade is Darryl Sutter for a bag of pucks.

While that might have been the ideal, you do have to realize that Carolina is also involved in this deal. What they wanted matters as well. Besides, Babchuk can be dealt for picks at the deadline just as easily as White could have been.

Right now, there is no harm in trying to get this team into the playoffs, so long as the future is not sacrificed. This trade does not sacrifice the future, nor does it hamper our ability to make other moves. It is a worthwhile trade to make on November 17.

Would have liked a draft pick coming back as White is our ONLY trade chip. Oh yeah Tom Kop-whatever... seriously??? We need another 4th line-press box guy like we need another 5th-6th defenceman. WTF??

Hopefully Anton Babchuck is as good on the PP as everyone says.

Have the Flames given up and decided to tank for a top 5 pick?

I'd take Babchuk & Kostopo over White & Sutter any day of the week, Babchuk has size & more offensive upside, Kostopolous is a proven 3rd/4th line guy, Sutter on the other hand is a proven juvenile delinquent.

@Mamie Jacouns Love Child

Look, the only two things White brought were a right shot, and a powerplay presence. Other than that, the dude was brutal.

Babchuk is a heavy right hand shot, and he's huge, so he brings about as much as White, then some. If he's just as brutal defensively... at least he's cheaper.

L shot: J Bo, Reggie, Gio, Mikkelson

R shot: Sarich, Babchuk, Staios

My fear is that suddenly Babchuk becomes a #4 guy? Does D.Sutt know something about him we don't. Cause please tell me Staios isn't getting White's minutes.

I know, but Darryl and Brent are old fashion. They love the L-R shot pairings.

I guess it's likely:

Jbo-Gio (These two lefties have played together it's true) Reggie-Sarich Mikkelson-Babchuk

Doesn't look any worse than with White.

If you are going to go that route, you have to be even handed about it.

Sjostrom was a "UFA that could be had for nothing" on Toronto's side. Given he was waived already this year, Sutter is a player Carolina could have had "for nothing" as well.

It was more about Sutter's lack of sound personnel decisions then the actual trade. If you were to do the "whole" trade, yes, Babchuk would be added on.
