Head-to-head ice

Another extra time loss. This has to be the lowest event game of the year, owing to both clubs playing most of the contest between the bluelines. The Devils went into the deepest defensive shell after going up by one that I've seen in a loing time. They are severely limited with the absence oif guys like Langenbrunner and Parise on the shelf and Kovalchuk playing terrible hockey.

The Flames did enough to win in reguation. They were the only club generating anything from the second period on. That said, it was another no-show for a first period and it's not like they blew the Devils out of the water when they were sitting back. The Flames managed five shots in the third period, despite the importance of this game and the apparent impotence of their opponent. They were also lucky to escape the OT alive.

Enough to win with some bounces. But hardly compelling.

Also - Olli Jokinen's numbers are decieving. He was mostly a detriment on the first line and they managed chances mostly despite his presence.

The Devs just have no one left that is very good.

Didn't pay too much attention to this game but once I saw Iggy on two separate shifts in front of Gio (turns out partnered with Babchuk) I knew it wasn't PVP.

EXCEPT the H2H icetime shows #12 facing off against Zajac and wingers which is, sad to say for NJD, their best players probably. Kovalchuk was just awful with the puck and went 1-6 by my rough counting above.

Yeah, Calgary REALLY needed to be players in signing this guy this summer.

The Flames played tentatively through the final 10 minutes and no doubt it was a bit of gaming by Sutter and at that point... who can blame him?

What I want to know is what the Flames were doing in the first. Didn't catch much of it on TV, heard the first 5 on the radio though and they didn't sound like they were generating anything. And going by that anemic 2-3... looks like "one-in forecheck, all day every day, in a scoreless first period tie" is coming back in style.

Olli Jokinen should not ever skate on the top line again, when I heard this on the fan I said to myself, there goes Iggy's hot streak. Olli Jokinen's stick, where offensive plays go to die. Moss was great the previous games on the PP but tonight it is the JOKE, is Sutter(x2) drinking the bath water, WTf

@Kent Wilson

Like I said in the other thread, he was one of only a few guys who seemed to give a crap about this game, and good for him, but that's a damn shame given the position we're in.

Grumble grumble.

Turns out Iggy only had a few minutes with Gio. Was that a 2nd period switch? Saw him a bunch with 5 in the third.

What I seem to not be making clear, is not a defense of Jokinen himself, it's just the scape goat use of Jokinen.

I watch the games, I watch them closely. Maybe Kent is right in his article about perception, but I don't see Jokinen playing so poorly he is a scapegoat. He's not -4, he's not bleeding chances. Sure, he may be lousy on some plays but answer me this.

If Jokinen is so bad, why did Backlund suck tonight? Or Hagman? Or Morrison? Or Jackman, Kostopoulous and Meyer? Or Babchuk? Or Staois? Or why did Iginla play soft if his linemate was bad?

I've said it before, Jokinen isn't great, but he isn't some magic black hole that makes every line awful. This was a game and a NJ team lying wanton on their back, begging to be controlled and no players stepped up. None. We lick balls.

The team sucked tonight, and he's part of that team, so he sucked too, maybe he sucked more, but so did everyone else.

Maybe you'd prefer to scapegoat either Sutter? Fine by me if it's Brent, hate that guy. Though IMO Darryl has been convicted of way too many crimes. While his true sins go unnoticed (nobody ever brings up the Reinprecht or [first] Tanguaay trades for instance).

Not as bad as scapegoating the owners I guess. That's out of left field.

I dunno, I would prefer not to have Jokinen on this team at all but if we're going to have him, he should be playing against the weakest players imaginable.

That doesn't often happen.

My rants on Brent and complaints on Darryl are easily found. At some point the players need abuse too.

Tonight: he had decent forays from just inside the dots that I noticed. A couple horrid giveaways though in the O and D zone that thankfully led to nothing. And I mean the really terrible "not-thinking" kind where there was literally nobody that was in the lane he was trying to pass into (or out of).

Didnt get to watch it but listened to Pete and Mike on The Fan. Sounded like a typical Devils game. sounded like Karlsson played good (nice save at the end). Jokinen i agree should never bee on the top line, to me hes a 3rd liner TOPS! Didnt sound like anyone "Sucked" tonight, just couldnt get it done. Interesting to hear Mike after the game talk about "Big moves coming" and maybe from ownership. Take that how you will. Bottom line is they lost and when you're in the Stanley Cup finals, no team has ever won with a great effort and lost the game.

Staois is big isn't he?

6'1", 200 lbs., big enough.

Does 27 to Abbotsford count as a big move¿¡

Maybe if he drives instead of flies. He can afford it.

@ RO

Which Tanguay trade are you talking about? The one where he got traded to Calgary for Leopold and two 2nds? Was it that bad of a trade?

And what about the Reinprecht for Suave deal. Was Reinprecht a difference maker back in the day?

I didn't really understand hockey to the extent as I do now. I was more of a believer in "Hard work" and "Leadership" back then.

Yes I totally agree. They should stick the backup in more often.

I agree with the radio analysts, I thought the game was fairly good, Flames won the majority of the puck battles.

1.) Tanguay for a first in 2008. Then flipping a higher first for Cammalleri, an inferior player. 2.) Reinprecht wasn't Langkow but for a team that really struggled offensively, to trade someone who could create chances behind Iginla... sigh.

Sutter's an old man. Both of them. Blech. Probably got them from Bertuzzi though.

I'm everything flames. I've been a season ticket holder since I was old enough to get a job and we had a pile of non-playoff season with some terrible talent. When I see Olli I am reminded of the "young guns" campaign and the fact that they thought Jeff Shantz could be passed of as a first line center. Olli Jokinen completely blows my mind as to how he was and 80+ point guy. He's not good at one thing. He's the worst passer (much like my beer league when guys just randomly throw it to a spot) and an even worse accepter of passes. His shots are always blocked and when he does get them through they are weak or when he gets a lot on it, he misses the net by quite a bit. That's said I agree with both Kent and Lawrence.....while he's not the entire problem for our horrible start, he's done nothing to get us off his back. Take your two goals and go f&!$ your!!#@

Ok, so this is more like it. I can live with Joker being referred to as a facial boil, and people tempering their criticism.

WHY?

I dunno, maybe because the only thing I feel like we have to look forward to is figuring out what can be done with this team (although we're powerless to do it)

Here's the straight shot.

Jokinen CAN be effective. He sucks 90% of the time, and with him maybe the best we can hope for is 50/50%. BUT we've all seen it. A number of games back, he RBQ and Glen X? went 10-0 in chances, and that game they dominated, not just the numbers. There have been a few others.

So why not regularly?

Same with Iggy. Same with Hagman. Same with Bourque. Same with Glen X. Same with Stajan.

That's 6 of our top 9 forwards.

WHY?

Look at the Detroit game. They were behind, playing poorly. Who steps up? Lidstrom(1G,2A), Rafalski(3A), Datsuyk(1G,2A), Zetterberg(2G), Franzen (1).

That's effectively one line combining for 12 points on 5 goals, with 3 PPG in a comeback.

When was the last time we saw that "shared dominance"

It's always one guy is hot, the others not, with us. Maybe the Chicago game was distributed leadership, and we killed the Hawks.

Then when we need 1 goal...nothing.

We've lost 5 of the last 10 by a score of 2-1 (if you exclude the Phoenix EN goal) and 7 of 10 where the goalies have allowed only 2 goals. Only TWO of those are wins.

I don't understand it.

Why can't more than 2 or 3 guys be rolling at the same time on this team? I've voiced this complaint for years. Too often, too many guys check out. It's hard to remember games where line after line comes over the boards and not even dominate, but just GO HARD.

It's so frustrating.
