Face-offs

Chances ended up even, but that's with the Flames leading things for half the contest so it's actually a pretty strong night considering Calgary was protecting most of the time.

The first period was poor, but the Flames took over in the second and the Wild were never really in the game after the 2 goal in 18 seconds thing. The first line of Tanguay-Stajan-Iginla were put into good position to score tonight (most offensive zone draws) and they took advantage, largely dominating. The Backlund line was also pretty strong despite the scoring chance numbers, with more defensive zone draws and a lot time versus Mikko Koivu.

Problems endure, however: the PP is still pretty punchless and the Moss line had their second straight blah performance. If the Flames can get all three forward lines firing a the same time, they might actually have something here.

I want to see Backlund on one of the PP units; he has the wision for it, as Kotalik would say.

Iginla doing "the Jagr".

Not ideal, I like the PIT game where he nearly sawed off Crosby more. But, hey, Jagr was a pretty decent player and Calgary does have enough real players to be Western New York, in a good way.

Also could call it "the Selanne" and I would not complain if Iginla is big a difference-maker in his 30s as Selanne was for the Ducks (albeit in the softer icetime etc.)

Been thinking over the last stretch about Sutter.

I don't think he's wrong (maybe excessive) when he says people want the team to lose. There are a lot of comments about losing now, to blow it all up, from numerous fans.

One thing I'm liking of his work is the bloated roster. We still have, in reality, a full line of injured or sitting players, and not a terrible one:

Meyer/Stone-Langkow-Kotalik

Pardy-Staios

It does make for interesting options, and if the team can manage the cap, ...it ain't my money.

When Pardy comes back...who's demoted? Sarich was terrible again last night. Mikkelsson was awful. Although I've liked Mikks games lately.

I don't see Babchuk as poorly as others, but he's sure not the poor man's Phaneuf. More the poor man's JBO, and that's for a very poor man. Granted, JBO does make 6 times as much so...

When Kotalik returns he and Joker need to be doing the Staois/Sarich rotation. Get one of them going. Although fans and media would get all stupid about it. I mean, Sutter has created this team in a way that expensive players are going to sit if they aren't going, and I'm fine with that. It SHOULD be that way. Well, actually, expensive players should bring it every night, but instead we've got Joker, Iggy, Bourque, Hagman, Stajan, GlenX, Staois and Sarich on our roster.

That is all, until Wednesday, Die Canucks.

have to say that I was impressed with Backlunds play in this game. Even more so after looking at his underlying stats. He basically sawed off the Koivu line, with unfavourable zone starts to boot. And did so with fish head on his wing. That is being a little unfair to Olli, I thought that he played a pretty strong game from what I saw. I noticed him a couple of times hard on the forecheck and creating chances down low. If he plays like that all the time he should hopefully start to score some more.
