This one was an inversion of a lot of the Flames games recently: Calgary got out to an early lead and then spent most of the night protecting it. They were marginally the better team in the first, but began to sag under the weight of their lead as the game went on. They went into full shell mode in the third and were somewhat lucky to push things into extra time.
They were definitely the better team in OT for a change, so you can say they deserved the win as a result. In terms of individuals, the primary match-up was Iggy vs Nash and Jarome found himself deep under water in terms of possession and scoring chances through regulation, although he wasn't helped much by his line mates (Jokinen and Tanguay) through much of the evening. Otherwise, backlund was a guy that stood out on the bright side, with a nice +5 number. Bourque played on that line and was above water for a change as well.
Yes, that win doesn't exactly inspire much confidence, does it? I mean, look at Reggie and JbO's numbers. Ouch.
I can't believe B Sutter was actually clapping his hands in triumph after the game winning goal. It's not like the flames dominated the Jackets for most of the night or anything. That was a pretty whimsical performance for the twentieth "must-win" game of the season.
I guess the W means the inevitable is postponed a bit longer. If nothing else, Iggy and Kipper's recent play is increasing their trade value come February. One of them will most definitely be gone this season. I'm hoping it won't be Iggy.
jbo's numbers don't support a third star award.
Backlund with the reverse "strudwick"
How much better does Backlund have to play to start getting rewarded with some powerplay time? Jokinen killed more plays than I thought humanly possible last night. He's back to forcing the puck to Iggy instead of looking for a play. Last night I think that Backlund would have improved the top line.
backlund has been playing his best hockey as a pro as of late, so why not run with it? move the kid up with iggy and tangs. his apprenticeship with the flames requires him to play the bigtime minutes. the flames are basically in to the elimination round,reward backs with special teams and frontline minutes.
@hal a pena
Amen brother.
If the power play isn't working, then simplify. Put Backlund, GlenX & Moss on the ice. Control the puck down low to suck down the top of the box, get the puck to the point or Backlund and send the other 2 to the net. That many guys in front and something has to pinball in.
