Game No. 35: Captain Game Thread

Ryan Lambert
December 21 2010 04:39PM

The best news of the day was that the Flames will unveil their new super hero ahead of the Edmonton game.

So remember at the start of the season the NHL, for some ungodly reason, announced that it was partnering with Stan Lee The Guy Who Created Spider-Man to create 30 superheros, or, as the league is calling them, "Guardians." One for each NHL team.

"What," asked the kind of people who ask these things, "did that cost?"

"Why," asked the everyone else, "would they bother?"

But the important thing to keep in mind when it comes to almost any decision made by the National Hockey League is, "Why even ask?" Yup, the Flames have their own Guardian. Don't read into that too much.

I was remarkably disappointed, however, to find that this superhero already has a name. It is, imaginatively enough, The Flame. That's true. He could be unveiled ahead of Jan. 7's game with the Oilers. When he will face off with... The Oiler? God, these are just lazy.

Let's not dwell on that. Let's focus on tonight's game against the Blue Jackets (I wonder what their "Guardian" is called... probably Rick Nash). In order to avoid yet another three-game losing streak — this would be the season's fifth of those, by the way — they're going to need Henrik Karlsson, who's in for the overworked and underappreciated Miikka Kiprusoff, to be Reasonably Good Man. With points earned in his last three games, and never more than two goals allowed in any of them, he's been that and more.

But the problem, as always, is that the offense simply hasn't been the League of Somewhat Reliable Scorers for quite some time now. There's been the odd noisy outburst (five against Toronto, four against Tampa), but they've scored two goals or fewer in seven of 10 games this month, and that's going to win you absolutely nothing. They haven't lost a game in regulation in which they scored more than three goals since Nov. 13. Of course, that's only happened six times.

And by the way, as of right this second, the only forward certain to be banished to the Pressbox of Solitude, as both Kotalik and Backlund are taking warmups.

Tonight, I am Low Expectations Man.

I guess we should be happy he's not called "THE FLAMER".

The Blue Jackets guy should be dubbed 'Captain Vyborny'.

I don't understand why Kotalik is in the lineup over Backlund, how is that an upgrade? Backlund has more potential than Kotalik and is more productive right now.

So, Mike Rogers said in the pre-game that Rob Cookson thinks the Flames are not allowing to many quality chances against.

Ok, fair enough, I have no proof otherwise.

Then he continued to say that Cookson said that Kiprusoff didn't see ONE good quality chance against UNTIL the third period of last game vs. Minny. He continued to say Kiprusoff needs to be better.

Ok, fine. I think Miikka can assess his game better than I can, and knows if he needs to be better, and he can...so I'm not going to waste time on that.

BUT, if Cookson thinks the Flames didn't allow ONE quality chance against until the THIRD...he's insane.

You can even watch the NHL.com highlights and there are two 2-on-1's and a beauty chance in the high slot that Kipper made 3 very strong saves on. A lunging one vs Madden, A low-blocker save vs Bouchard, and one against Kobasew/Brunette? Not to mention the screened rebound goal IS a chance against. That's at least 4.

If Cookson assessing our defense, he's not doing his job. Cause he's way off base.

You're not going to get any disagreement from me that Kipper could have been better these two games, but why to the "higher ups" always say the opposite we see.

"Scoring isn't a problem." - ok 10 games with 1 goal or less.

"No quality chances agaisnt" - obvious high quality chances against.

They've lost their collective minds.

Yeah, that sounds ridiculous to me as well.

From a radio interview I heard after the first Minny game, it sounded like Noodles was counting chances. However, his chance count sounded right in line with my own.

Lawrence, your whole post is predicated on the idea that the coaches tell the media the truth. I think we can say that's been proven to be generally not the case, at least here in Calgary. Perhaps other coaching staffs in other cities are more enlightened, but we've lived under the dark cloud of nosmilingallowed for so long that I really have no idea.

Jokinen and Morrison make more mistakes in a game than Backlund has in the last month. This type of player management could've turned Crosby into a 4th liner.

Even if you think Backlund is marginally inferior to those guys (and I don't), at this point it doesn't make sense to sit him. Backlund getting better is a more worthwhile goal right now than trying to scrape into the playoffs against all odds.

As much as the Flames are a mediocre team, they've also had terrible luck since about last December. Maybe all that will pendulum back the other way and they'll win the cup based on an insane lucky streak in the 2011

Has anyone been privy to any of the flames "mental development" sessions?

I would love to be a fly on the wall for one of those right now...

IMO the flames need way more emotion (and some skill but thats a whole other debate) but they seem to have an over abundance of "level headed" characters. I know the sutters preach the steady eddie approach but I think thats the problem... look at ovy, or crosby... we need some of that style energy, not a whole team of Bouwmeester's.

Just think of the conversations that happen in that dressing room... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
