VANCOUVER - APRIL 8: Head coach Darryl Sutter of the Calgary Flames looks on before the game against the Vancouver Canucks at General Motors Place on April 8, 2006 in Vancouver, Canada. Vancouver defeated Calgary 3-2 in overtime. (Photo by Jeff Vinnick/Getty Images)

According to Vicki Hall, Darryl Sutter has (finally?) stepped down as the Flames General Manager, leaving Jay Feaster in charge.

More analysis and such to come.

Why now? Before the masses start to celebrate: Feaster is not as good as Sutter was, even with all of Daz's problems.

Kent, I have the same question you asked Scott Cruickshank on Twitter. Is he actually leaving, or just moving to another office?

Certainly has the feel to it. Feaster to provide full evaluation? Reading between the lines, i think several people go.

agree feaster not the answer. if its going to be blown up tho why have a temp do that? seems retarded. if ownership asks iggy to take a trade his stock is rising again i don't think feaster is the right guyand if he isn't the full time gm he shouldnt be making them. how are possible replacements. dome has thrown out gainey and lanny but what are some other options?

Either is moronic. Why blow up the team at this point with an "Interim" GM?

i agree i just don't like feaster being the trigger man. maybe he will prove me wrong. iggy and kipps stock very high. hate to see one or both go but could be for the best unless by an act of god kot, joke and hags can be removed, 9 million and a high draft pick could make for a quick turnaround?

As i said before, I admire a man who admits failure and falls on his sword. Now I do believe it was a case of "Jump or be pushed". Jay Feaster is not the answer. They need whole new blood, but Jay can handle for the remainder of the year, then step back as a new President, GM and coach are chosen.

Will Feaster, and interm GM , have the power to pull the trigger on deals that will shape a team he may not be in charge of past this year? Kinda seems odd to me!

@Justin Azevedo

Doubt the owners hired him as an interim to begin with. Its a title until a new contract is signed.Chances are Feaster was plan b all along.

Then the Flames are in worse shape then they were at about 10 last night. We are 5 points out of a playoff spot-there is no incentive AT THIS POINT to try and remove/add players.

Im glad Darryl is gone. But why are the scouts still here? Why is the coach still here? Why are the assistant coaches still here?

This is a PR move, plain and simple, if you ask me. The fans got Darryls scalp.

Until someone is named as the full-time GM then we should not be looking at big trades. I think Tanguay might fetch something at the trade deadline if we are far out of a playoff spot - but should not be trading Iggy or Kipper until we know who is leading this team in the future. We saw the problem of moves made by an interm GM in Toronto with Fletcher and then Burke had to deal with those.

I don't know what kind of power Feaster is going to be entrusted with here. I'm hoping it'll be purely custodial since I have no use for Feaster as a GM.

thats the problem i have is if it's going to be blown up this is prob the year to do it with the way iggy, kipper and reg are playing. that coupled with enough vets (aka bad contracts) around to ice ateam next year and get another lottery pick then have bad contracts gone. those 3 players a year older may not fetch as much. let the speculation begin on trades. maybe now a good time for a what should feaster do thread?

So rebuild or retool?

Calgary is 3 to 5 seasons away from being relevant which is awesome.

If the Flames trade Kipper 1st it guarantees multiple lotto picks.(which is the way to go)

The team needs to change their overall philosophy, today's move was a step in the right direction.

I just hope Calgary hires Ken Hitchcock and draft a shutdown defenseman.

DO NOT DRAFT A #1 CENTER!!!

Well, the fans are getting what they want. Dion is gone, Darryl has been 'removed', I wonder what's next.

We now have a guy who wrote an article titled "Dodging the Vokoun bullet" steering the ship.

Hmmm, to Feaster, arguably the best goalie in the league would have been a poor choice? Sure, I understand his connections in that article, with draft picks and dollars, but he has shown he has no ability to assess skill or value with his ideas on Vokoun's abilities and numerous other players in other articles.

Now he's in charge.

perfect.

Wonder how much the alleged Darryll and Brent no speak had to do with this, Feaster was in a sense a mediator.

"We believe that while we continue to compete for a playoff position this season, this period will provide both the organization and Jay time to decide on critical future decisions.”

...critical future decisions. That about sums it up. 30 games to decide where Iggy and Kipper are traded to.

It's a step in the right direction. I'm hopeful that Feaster is just an interim guy until the offseason when they can do a search for a proper replacement. Too bad the ownership didn't have any balls last year, we could have Stevie Y as our GM right now.

It might not be just those two guys. Matt Stajan might be another target, and he only has a modified NTC. Regher is another player that could ask out if things head for a full rebuild.

Tampa Bay was robbed on the Brad Richards trade. If you look at the three players, Mike Smith, the headliner, has been entirely underwhelming, Jussi Jokinen is a hurricane, and Jeff Halpern has played for several teams.

I wouldn't trust Feaster to be maestro on a star Flames trade. Then again, no return will ever be good enough for the Flames faithful.

Do the Flames follow the Oilers on twitter or do they just ride the coattails better than any team in the NHL?

Edmonton wants a new rink...Calgary needs a new arena.

Edmonton accepts rebuilding..Calgary starts to rebuild..

Calgary Coattails, y'all are a bunch of followers.

Best team in the province will always be the one up the deuce!

...not to say Yzerman isn't the man (which he is), but he had a pretty decent hand to work with in Tampa. He would have been the sexy choice, but not sure he would have been the right choice.

...I don't have a list of candidates for GM, I just know anyone associate with the Detroit front office for a long time wouldn't be a bad choice.

It was a change that needed to be made, but I wish Darryl well in his future endeavors. I was pretty much on side until late last season (ntil he pulled the Phaneuf / Jokinen trades)

I hope this is a full purge (re: Ken King), but I somehow doubt it... I don't see a much needed remake of the team if Ken King survives...
