Draft Day

After much fenagling, FlamesNation and The FAN 960 are on the draft floor right now. As Kent has his draft day thread open, I'll be posting everything that I hear and see right here. Anything we hear on the Flames front will go up as an article on the site right away. So lets get this thing going!
Not much going on right now, we're hearing St. Louis might be in the market to acquire Florida's Keith Ballard. As for the Flames, we've been told not much is going on. As I wrote earlier this week, it's doubtful that Calgary will move up into the top 30 picks. But we're certainly hearing that it's very possible a move into the second round is in the cards.
GM's are starting to filter in...we've had a Mike Gillis sighting from the Canucks and Cam Neely is kicking around from the Boston Bruins. Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com saying contract talks between Gonchar and GM Shero seem to be going nowhere with not a ton of progress being made.
Darren Dreger of TSN reporting that Denis Grebeshkov's name is now in play as well. He's a restricted free agent on July 1st.
Mark Spector of Sportsnet reporting the Flames and Darryl Sutter are trying to move into the first round. I still don't know if I see it happening, but apparently Darryl is talking.
Also - join me for a livechat starting at 4:30pm -
With Kaberle and Ballard in play, the Flames may have to wait to get any bites on their (theorized) available blueliners.
Yeah, and the rights for Gonchar and Volchenkov could also be in play...and who knows what the Flyers are thinking when it comes to Hamhuis.
Now Dreger says that Grebeshkov is in the mix.
Bad year to have excess defenders available.
"Sheldon Souray is in play". So here's the list of defenders apparently available:
- Kaberle - Ballard - Souray - Grebeshkov - Gonchar (rights) - Volchenkov (rights) - Whoever the Flames might dangle
Boooooo.
Yeah, that sucks. But Regehr and Sarich still have value to alot of teams that lack decent shut down Dmen.
Yeah, anyone looking for a "for sure" defenseman isn't going to go for the rights and Kaberle isn't the same skillset as they guys we'd be selling. So that leaves Souray (who we knew would be for sale anyways) and Ballard. If the Flames could do a deal before they could do one now.
If we could get a second round pick for Sarich and/or Staios I would be happy. Then at least we could afford to resign White to a long term contract and have room to give Pelech a shot.
@Bill
If we could get a 5th round pick for Staois, I would be ecstatic.
Sorry it's a little late, but the live blog is up and going.
@Pat Steinberg
Where?
Hey Pat, any legs to the Spezza to Cgy rumor?
