MONTREAL, QC - JUNE 27: General Manager Darryl Sutter of the Calgary Flames speaks with the media during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft at the Bell Centre on June 27, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

After the disappointing non-evnt that was day one fo the draft for Calgary fans, there's some anticipation that Sutter will make at least one or two minor moves on day two, be it in the form of moving picks or dumping salary. If not, at least the Flames will actually be making picks.

Updates and reactions will be added to this thread as things happen.

UPDATE - Perhaps the good news for the Flames is that there was a lot of unexpected "reaches" in the first round, meaning a bunch of quality players got bumped down the order. John McFarland, Stanislav Galiev, Tyler Pitlick, Jon Merril, Alex Pterovic, Brad Ross, Kirrill Kabanov, Jordan Weal, Tyler Toffoli and Justin Falk were all considered decent bets to be top 30 picks themselves. With that much quality still around, hopefully Sutter can take advantage today.

- For those unaware, the Flames picks today are: 64, 73, 104, 108, 133, 163 and 193

2nd round:

- EDM - Tyler Pitlick

- BOS - Jared Knight

- FLA - John McFarland

- CBJ - dalton Smith

- CHI Ludvig Renfeldt (first swede!)

- FLA - Alex Petrovic

- CAR - Justin Falk

- NJD - Jon Merril

- MIN - Brett Bulmer

- NYR - Christian Thomas

- DAL - Patrik Nemeth

- ANA - Devante Pelley-Smith

- TOR - Brad Ross

- STL - Sebastion Wannstrom

- BOS - Ryan Spooner

- EDM - Martin Marincin

- COL - Calvin Pickard

- FLA - Connor Brickley

- DET - Calle Jarnkrok (great name)

- PHX - Philip Lane

- CAR - Mark Alt

- CHI - Justin Holl

- CBJ - Peter Straka

- MIN  - Johan Larsson

- PHX - Oscar Lindberg

- CHI - Kent Simpson (CHI third pick of the second round)

- MIN - Jason Zucker

- CHI - Stephen Johns

Flames indeed fail to move up into the second round.

3rd round:

- EDM - Ryan Martindale

- TOR - Gregg McKegg

- TBL - Brock Beukeboom

- CGY - Maxwell Reinhart

- NYI - Kirrill Kabanov

- FLA - Joe Basaraba

- LAK - Jordan Weal

- COL - Micheal Bournival

- TBL - Adam Janosik

With only 3rd round picks I didn't imagine too many awe-inspiring endgames today.

So in sum, a very mediocre #64 and a most-likely-illusory #73 that I am nevertheless fairly happy with due to the mindset involved (find out if the gaudy number means something, at little cost), and a couple guys I don't know in the 4th round.

I don't know, we didn't trade Lanks and didn't acquire Spezza and didn't aqcuire the rights to yet another defenceman. I think that's about the most we could have hoped going into today. Can't win them all.

I will say this - a day like today makes me wish we still had Boyd.

I was really hoping to see a salary dump frankly. See: Cory Sarich. That's the most disappointing part to me.

That would have been nice. Although I think maybe you undervalue Sarich (unless there's an injury, possible but not certain) although that brings us again to our conversation yesterday about the relative uselessness of defensive depth.

I would have preferred to dump Kotalik, I like watching his game but he just doesn't deliver.

But, the team didn't get immediately and irreversibly worse like the CP ogres wanted it to. Small victories.

Yup. It reiterates how rare it is to get someone like him in the third round. I don't even know if he'll progress beyond what he is, but it's better to have him than not.

Ouch, so pessimistic. Come on they are only 17-18, hopefully they progress more than Boyd. (Here's to being an optimistic fan...)

Sarich got murdered by the scoring chances this year... right up until he got moved to the third pairing with Giordano. He's not a top pairing guy anymore and given the Flames stable of defenders, I'd much rather move him and give his dollars to White or some upgrade up front.

Yeah. It sucked to see. Though the track record... you know how I am about that, Sarich was a decent EV defenceman there for a while

I like the Bill Arnold pick. Seems like a good choice relative to the position... is Ramage an overager? my rudimentary adding skills seem to indicate that he's 19?

Ramage wasn't picked in 2009.

It really depends on what he does before that, actually. If he re-signs Higgins and White and doesn't clear up some big time cap room, the Flames could be spectators in July as well.

oh right.. I keep forgetting about higgins for some reason. I think I was expecting too much from them this weekend (I guess there is still time) but I have to say I'm extremely bored and very unimpressed.

LAK got some good value picks. Toffoli in the 2nd and Weal in the 3rd. Both quality offensive players in junior.

and they did well the past few years too. (Kozun & Jones) They're going to be scary in the coming years.

Wow, what an atrocious draft. Sutter seems to be picking guys at random.

This is a carbon copy of the last draft, only without the high upside players we have been getting in the first couple rounds.

I didn't think it would be possible to be less excited for the future of the Flames.

Agreed, the last couple drafts Sutter was at least able to pull a couple nice picks in the first two rounds.

If you can't pick in those rounds, why not swing for the fences in the later rounds. Weal, Pulkinnen, Kabanov, Rutkowski.

Blurgh. This is the opposite of progress.

Dissapointment reigns supreme

Five foot five and two-fifteen? I guess he blocks the bottom of the net by girth alone ;-)

Calagry's 7th round pick was Patrick Holland of Tri-City. RW, 6', 167.

From Mark Spector's twitter account:

Calgary GM Darryl Sutter tells us he's not actively seeking a centre for Jarome Iginla. Until he lands one, of course.

No real indication of the direction that Sutter is taking. It's wait and see on the draft picks, but I am concerned that we didn't dump any salaries.

Biggest news, the potential backup in Karlsson, no NHL experience, but worth a look in training camp. Not sure that we really had the cap space to sign a more established guy anyway.

Overall a disappointing draft, guess we are used to Sutter pulling something out of the hat and making a splash.
