Draft Day Two - Open Thread

MONTREAL, QC - JUNE 27: General Manager Darryl Sutter of the Calgary Flames speaks with the media during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft at the Bell Centre on June 27, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

After the disappointing non-evnt that was day one fo the draft for Calgary fans, there's some anticipation that Sutter will make at least one or two minor moves on day two, be it in the form of moving picks or dumping salary. If not, at least the Flames will actually be making picks.

Updates and reactions will be added to this thread as things happen.

UPDATE - Perhaps the good news for the Flames is that there was a lot of unexpected "reaches" in the first round, meaning a bunch of quality players got bumped down the order. John McFarland, Stanislav Galiev, Tyler Pitlick, Jon Merril, Alex Pterovic, Brad Ross, Kirrill Kabanov, Jordan Weal, Tyler Toffoli and Justin Falk were all considered decent bets to be top 30 picks themselves. With that much quality still around, hopefully Sutter can take advantage today.

- For those unaware, the Flames picks today are: 64, 73, 104, 108, 133, 163 and 193

2nd round:

- EDM - Tyler Pitlick

- BOS - Jared Knight

- FLA - John McFarland

- CBJ - dalton Smith

- CHI Ludvig Renfeldt (first swede!)

- FLA - Alex Petrovic

- CAR - Justin Falk

- NJD - Jon Merril

- MIN - Brett Bulmer

- NYR - Christian Thomas

- DAL - Patrik Nemeth

- ANA - Devante Pelley-Smith

- TOR - Brad Ross

- STL - Sebastion Wannstrom

- BOS - Ryan Spooner

- EDM - Martin Marincin

- COL - Calvin Pickard

- FLA - Connor Brickley

- DET - Calle Jarnkrok (great name)

- PHX - Philip Lane

- CAR - Mark Alt

- CHI - Justin Holl

- CBJ - Peter Straka

- MIN  - Johan Larsson

- PHX - Oscar Lindberg

- CHI - Kent Simpson (CHI third pick of the second round)

- MIN - Jason Zucker

- CHI - Stephen Johns

Flames indeed fail to move up into the second round.

3rd round:

- EDM - Ryan Martindale

- TOR - Gregg McKegg

- TBL - Brock Beukeboom

- CGY - Maxwell Reinhart

- NYI - Kirrill Kabanov

- CAR - Danny Biega

- BUF -Jerome Leduc-Gauthier

- FLA - Joe Basaraba

- LAK - Jordan Weal

- COL - Micheal Bournival

- TBL - Adam Janosik

- CGY - Joey Leach

I like the Bill Arnold pick. Seems like a good choice relative to the position... is Ramage an overager? my rudimentary adding skills seem to indicate that he's 19?

I hear there's streaming on NHL.com, can't find it though. Would it even be worth watching, or is the radio sufficient?

There is a rumor from the rumor mill of Eklund that the Langkow + Regehr for Spezza deal might be revisited today. I am not really sure how I feel about that deal IF it does go through. How do you feel about it??

Allright, so what are our picks this year? I know they don't start until the 3rd - but what are our picks?

@dustin642

How could you not like it? We shed dead weight for a guy who even in a bad year would be one of the top scorers on the team.

With the rights of Hamhuis going to Pittsburgh, I think there probably was some discussion sending Regehr to Pittsburgh.

Dead weight eh? Yeah, okay. I would love to see your video-game team. Malkin, Spezza, Lecavalier, Jokinen up the middle, right? How could you possibly choose amongst these elite FIRST-LINE centres, they are all just terrific scorers with big bodies and good-looking in jeans to boot.

Recent history with the home team doesn't even hint at the possibility that maybe context of icetime matters.

Hey Kent, do you think there is anything to the Spezza to Cgy rumor? If so, the Flames would have to move some serious cap dollars to Ottawa wouldn't they? Thanks.

Looks like the Oilers wanted their "McSorley" to go with their "Gretzky". The Oil were after McIrath pretty badly apparently.

I should just say, I really hate that Calgary Puck crowd. It was a piss-off to start seeing them infiltrate M&G, here too.

I mean when I see the "dead-weight" label applied to really terrific even-strength players like Regehr and Langkow... it just reminds me of what is wrong with 95% of fanbases (i.e. everything).

TSN talking heads said the deal fell through with the Panthers for #15 because McIlrath was picked.

I'm with you on this one. Watching Regehr and Langkow night in and night out you can TELL they are elite players on the ice.

One year out of the playoffs and apparently everyone is garbage.

They may be given the kool-aid, but they don't have to drink it.

Yeah, it's also HFBoards, the FAN, SportsNet, TSN, CBC, on and on. It's frustrating as hell, I like talking/reading about hockey but there's so few places to do it.

If he is there, it's completely worth the gamble with one of those two picks. The chances of a third rounder panning out are pretty low.

Just Googled Kabanov, PPG player in Junior but over 22 games. And he is tall.

I have no idea what his situation is re: what are his scouted skills and such. I heard on the radio that he has "discipline problems". Is that pretty much the nitty and gritty of it? Am I missing any games played and accompanying offensive production?

Allright, 18 picks out from our first pick.

What are some of the top rated guys not selected that could potentially fall to us?

Dismissed from his junior team and the Russian U18 club this year. Multiple agents already. I suspect the NHL opinion of him would be "head case".

At the price of a 3rd I think it'd be worthwhile to see whether Weal had a hand on the wheel of the bus that the 19-year-old Eberle was likely steering.

Not saying that Eberle is the second coming (he may be, but he may not be) but he's 19 in junior, big advantage.

That huge QUALTEAM component was/is probably why teams are staying away from him right now.

Yup. There's a very real chance that Weal's results are significantly inflated by Eberle.
