Draft Day Two - Open Thread

MONTREAL, QC - JUNE 27: General Manager Darryl Sutter of the Calgary Flames speaks with the media during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft at the Bell Centre on June 27, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

After the disappointing non-evnt that was day one fo the draft for Calgary fans, there's some anticipation that Sutter will make at least one or two minor moves on day two, be it in the form of moving picks or dumping salary. If not, at least the Flames will actually be making picks.

Updates and reactions will be added to this thread as things happen.

UPDATE - Perhaps the good news for the Flames is that there was a lot of unexpected "reaches" in the first round, meaning a bunch of quality players got bumped down the order. John McFarland, Stanislav Galiev, Tyler Pitlick, Jon Merril, Alex Pterovic, Brad Ross, Kirrill Kabanov, Jordan Weal, Tyler Toffoli and Justin Falk were all considered decent bets to be top 30 picks themselves. With that much quality still around, hopefully Sutter can take advantage today.

- For those unaware, the Flames picks today are: 64, 73, 104, 108, 133, 163 and 193

2nd round:

- EDM - Tyler Pitlick

- BOS - Jared Knight

- FLA - John McFarland

- CBJ - dalton Smith

- CHI Ludvig Renfeldt (first swede!)

- FLA - Alex Petrovic

- CAR - Justin Falk

- NJD - Jon Merril

- MIN - Brett Bulmer

- NYR - Christian Thomas

- DAL - Patrik Nemeth

- ANA - Devante Pelley-Smith

- TOR - Brad Ross

- STL - Sebastion Wannstrom

- BOS - Ryan Spooner

- EDM - Martin Marincin

- COL - Calvin Pickard

- FLA - Connor Brickley

- DET - Calle Jarnkrok (great name)

- PHX - Philip Lane

- CAR - Mark Alt

- CHI - Justin Holl

- CBJ - Peter Straka

- MIN  - Johan Larsson

- PHX - Oscar Lindberg

- CHI - Kent Simpson (CHI third pick of the second round)

- MIN - Jason Zucker

- CHI - Stephen Johns

Flames indeed fail to move up into the second round.

3rd round:

- EDM - Ryan Martindale

- TOR - Gregg McKegg

- TBL - Brock Beukeboom

- CGY - Maxwell Reinhart

- NYI - Kirrill Kabanov

- CAR - Danny Biega

- BUF -Jerome Leduc-Gauthier

- FLA - Joe Basaraba

- LAK - Jordan Weal

- COL - Micheal Bournival

- TBL - Adam Janosik

- CGY - Joey Leach

- STL - Max Gardiner

- BUF - Kevin Sundher

- OTT - Jakub Culek

- DAL - Alex Guptill

- NSH - Taylor Arnason

- TOR - Sondre Olden

- PIT - Bryan Rust

- DET - Louis-Marc Aubry

- NYI - Jason Clark

- BUF - Matt McKenzie

- NJD - Scott Wedgewood

- CAR - Austin Levi

- WSH - Stanislav Galiev

- ATL - Julien Melchiori

- SJS - Max Gaede

- PHI - Micheal Caput

- CHI - Joakim Nordstrom

@Robert Cleave

If the RUSSIANS think he is a head case....then we should probably stay away.

We don't have a great history with Russians OR Headcases. Ryder. Tarathukin.

And...the Flames take someone I've never heard of out of the WHL. Sounds about right.

Kabanov apparently went the pick after.

I don't know what the Flames think they know about WHL players that the rest of the league doesn't, but unless it's something to the tune of "scoring chances and head-to-head icetimes" then I'm unimpressed.

Sutter blows it again... How do you pass on Kabanov at 64. At least grab Sundher.

Don't know about this d-man they just took but I would have rather packaged the 3rd in a salary dump than taken another d-man

Sutter loving on some Kootenay boys. Hopefully he knows something we don't as they've now missed out on Kabanov & Sundher.

Think that the Flames have free access to a cabin in the Kootenays? They don't seem to go anywhere else...

Pretty sure Sutter gravitated to that +33 for Leach.

Of course one wonders how an off-the-radar D-man could possibly rack up such a gaudy plus-minus number. Such a phenomenon has never been encountered ever at either the amateur or pro level.

Can we infer from the Leach pick that Sutter puts a bit of emphasis on +/-?

I suspect it although I'm willing to be shown otherwise. In any case it's a 3rd rounder so I guess it's worth it to figure out if that +/- is real or a product of good teammates and lucky goaltending.

In any case the guy is a Dman so the odds of him driving the bus there are low. But at least he was taken with one outstanding-looking number, that is the classic definition of all-or-nothing. So I like that #73 pick.

The Reinhart pick was atrocious though, he doesn't stand out in any way as far as I can tell. There's no lottery-ticket-like quality about him that should define all lower-round picks. He's just a big nothing player. With lottery tickets still available, it's a piss-off.

@Kent Wilson

I suppose. I don't know... way I see it at this point every pick is a shot in the dark so why are you not taking said shot at a guy who many thought had superstar potential (Kabanov), or a guy like Sundher who looks as good as you 63 choice (at least).

Further more can he not lay off some salary or is it just that he will not?

Also, I say "Sutter" when I really mean "Sutter's scouts" but I wonder how much of a say the former really has on draft decisions this late.

That means one of two things: Leach and partner were far and away the best guys on the club and were driving results or Leach and partner were sheltered and fed favorable circumstances.

Yeah, it's (almost) 100% the case that they were lucky and sheltered.

Still, it's worth checking out don't you think? Especially if the Sutters don't do scoring chances in junior, then taking a flyer on it costs the org just about nothing at #73.

With Reinhart though... I don't know, it's just nothing on top of nothing. No quality that makes him seem any good.

Thank God that your prediction of Pardy for a 3rd hasn't panned out Kent (though the night's not out yet). The Flames will need all of the 700k players they can get their hands on.

Anyways, I think that's pretty much the end of all meaningful action for the day.

Calgary just selected John Ramage, the son of former Flame Rob Ramage, at #103.

So, we're taking all the ex-Flames sons now?

Short of some ludicrous trades, I couldn't have come up with more of a disastrous draft so far for the Flames on paper
