You've got to be Jokinen

Courtesy Darren Dreger... Flames sign Jokinen to 2 year deal worth 3M per.

That is all.

if you look at what's happened on this team in the last five days, you have to really start to wonder if darryl sutter knows the names of any players who haven't historically donned the flaming C.

this team is gonna get annhialated this season.

TWO MORE YEARS OF THAT CLOWN ??!?!? is darryl TRYING to alienate the fanbase ??

anyone who said he shouldn't be fired at season's end is probably reconsidering their stance now. three words: john. ferguson. junior.

god help us.

Oh man, I'm... I'm... frag I can't even articulate what I think now.

Why? This makes zero sense. Olli 3M, Langkow, 4.5M, Stajan 3.5M... where does Backlund play? Who plays (at an outrageous price) on the third line? I don't get it? Something HAS to be up? Please?

I like him more at 3 million dollars per then Malholtra at 2.75.

And if Butter can properly utilize by giving him soft 3rd line minutes at ES and cushy PP time, this might not be a bad signing and can help this team win some games. That being said, this team is still pretty weak compared to most other teams in the west in terms of having difference maker forwards.

I realize everyone is crapping bricks right now, but either the Joker is going on the wing, or Backlund is going in the minors to develop. And having 11 million down the middle on your top 3 lines isn't particularly excessive. I hated Jokinen at 5.5/year, but I think I can handle 3; he's an upgrade on Kotalik, and can be the brunt of many jokes in the following seasons.

Let me give you a perspective from an Oiler fan...

It's one thing to make ONE counter-intuitive move (bringing Tanguay back) but it's another thing altogether to make two of them ... in the same day.

If I was a Flames fan, I'd be OK with the Tanguay deal if that was the only move Sutter made today. Nothing really wrong with the money and it's only a year. So what the heck. He had a good year with Iggy, why not bring him back again for another look?

But the fact that Sutter went to the discard pile twice ... well ... that tells me he's either lost his mind or he honestly thinks he's smarter than everyone - everyone - in the NHL.

Sutter's ego is getting the best of him now. Oiler fans have seen this before - back in the final days of the Sather era when he cared little for scouting or drafting and traded Miro Satan and Ray Whitney away for players who are now selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door.

Of course, there's a chance that Tanguay could end up with 65 points and Ollie could score 35 goals and Sutter will come out smelling like a rose.

But don't bet on it, fans of the Flame. The best you can hope for is ONE of these moves to work. Two moves like this working out is like winning the lottery.

Courage, Calgary. Courage.

Kent has a legit beef. He never liked Jokinen, he knew what he was. A weak player, a guy who didn't drive a play, but got results in soft icetime and parlayed it into a big contract.

The rest of you, well the vitriol is misplaced. Put it back in the box until you can actually predict the next player that will blow chunks on this roster. Then get back to me.

I don't know. I think it's warranted by everyone else. I mean, even the guys who didn't see it coming are allowed to believe their eyes once the results are obvious. On top of that, Sutter traded Jokinen and accepted a terrible bet in Kotalik in return...and then went and re-acquired Jokinen, making a bad initial trade positively dog-retard stupid as a result.

Even if you were over the moon with Jokinen the first time, I think you're allowed to call bullshit on this move, based solely on that.

Oh, I don't think so Kent. These clowns who call for heads of the GM daily, well I suppose it's their money in the end so it's their "right".

But their constant whinging, about-facing, fixation on hindsight without balancing with foresight, complete lack of courage in their convictions, and utter inability to see the game on the ice... well to this fan it's a bit much.

Sutter's not a great GM but he's probably running the team better than 19 of 20 of your readers, book it.

Damn, I would probably run this team into the ground too, but I'm at least a bit more reserved with the firing calls, y'know?

I can respect what Darryl did initially. Took the team to a Stanley cup win (if there was video replay) from not even having a sniff at the playoffs.

That being said, it's hard to see what it is he's doing now. From the outside there appears to be no rhyme or reason to his moves.

There was a time when I defended Darryl's moves even when I raised an eyebrow. Now I think that time is over. It's time for a new direction and an obvious path back to the "elite team" status.

That being said, if this happens to change everything and all of a sudden Tangs and Joker turn it around I'll happily eat crow.

A bunch of no-names (Raitis Ivanas and Tim Jackman) have apparently been signed for a combined $1.15M per year. One for 550k the other for 600k.

I'd prefer Dawes at 850k, though I doubt the difference is large. Whatever we're doing going forward, well, if it hinges on saving 400k, from the 4th line...

Penny-wise, hopefully not pound-foolish.

...thank you RO. You seem to be the voice of reason on this board (Kent seems to be in the category of critics you were discussing, but I digress). When Kotalik was put on waivers I was scratching my head. Now I'm thinking Jokinen and Sutter are, for lack of a better word, "gangster".

...To all the "he doesn't drive play" critics (Kent included). What's wrong with having a guy that is average ES but is excellent PP? Please, enlighten me.

I guess it could have been Savard with no Regehr, vs Jokinen and Regehr. We still have room to trade a dman or two...

Vancouver adds Ballard and Hamhuis to a strong team, Edmonton adds Taylor to an excellent young prospect group, Chicago and the Flames have taken steps backwards.

Sutter must have something else up his sleeve, maybe packaging a dman and a center for something. As it stands we don't have any money for White?

@B

From what I've read of R O's opinions, he is generally in the exact same camp as Kent (and almost certainly is on this particular topic); his comment wasn't in defence of Darryl Sutter, but simply a bit of a lashing-out at the average commenter on the Flames blogs. He feels that most people are just pissing into the wind with the comments they make, and they tend to go with whatever opinion is popular at the time.

I can't say I necessarily disagree with him (heck, I'll fully admit that I occasionally fall prey to prevailing opinion, myself), but at the same time I don't think that piece of commentary is warranted. The blogs and commenters for FN, MSG, etc. tend to be pretty collegial in atmosphere, and that sort of ad hominem tilt to an argument is a bit of a departure. Now, if this was hfboards, where every second post is someone being an a-hole, then it might be a little more understandable.

I'm still trying to think why sign him? He kept saying "this was the only offer on the table". Kypreos said you dont sign these guys the FIRST DAY FOR THIS MONEY, you call them at the end of the month. If there were no other offers um demand is low, therefore. . . Darryl take an economics class.

One of my favorite movies is Shawshank Redemption. In it Andy says "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of all things. And never let hope die." If Darryl is running this team on "Hope", oh boy! You dont spend $60M and hope that Tanger isnt washed up, that Jokinens time here was just a joke, that Kotalik, Bouwmeester, etc will bounce back. Thats a lot of hoping.

I truely think that this is his last swan song. He will sink or swim with these.

Thats a awesome pick up!

Maybe you should re-sign Jason Wiemer (for a third time around)

Maybe Dutter can ask Richie or Ron if they might be open for some extra work this fall in the organization...or current roster. Nothing would shock us Now!
