Pretty clear where the weak link resides tonight. The Flames were the marginally the better team at ES but would have run away with things if Iginla, Tanguay and Moss had held up their end of the bargain. Instead, they got dominated. If not for a couple of strong shifts while the team was chasing in the third, that trio would have been even deeper under water than they ended up. Even with that, they were a cumulative -8 in scoring chances and -5 by traditional plus/minus.
That said, overall it was a close match that could have gone either way. Both teams hit posts and it was a lucky bounce off a skate that ended up being the difference.
@SmellOfVictory
Sure, Kessel definitely had a big game. He's playing with Bozak and Lupul though - two absolute ES stiffs. That's a trio Jarome should take care of.
As you say, Moss is overmatched in the circle which doesn't help (although Steckel did a lot of damage there for the Leafs), but right now #12 is visibly behind the play a lot of the time.
In all honesty I think Phil Kessel needs his props. He's the reason the Iginla line got killed, by my eye. Well him, and Moss/Iginla both being highly ineffective in their own ways (I liked Tanguay's play for the most part). Kessel may be a bit one-dimensional, but he is quite good at that dimension.
Moss, much as we all love him, has two things going against him where he's playing right now: 1) he's good at puck possession, but his ability to make it go into the net is obviously not top-6; 2) he is GODAWFUL at faceoffs. I know faceoff percentages don't often make up a lot of a player's worth, but his faceoff ability is bad enough that I consider it a detriment to him at centre. If Sutter insists on him playing C, Iginla should be taking all of the faceoffs for that line.
@Kent Wilson
Kent, you hit this right on the head. Iginla and Moss were not good enough, and Tanguay could not prop his line mates up enough. The numbers really didn't come as any surprise. I thought Jerome was better in the last 1/2 of the 3rd period. I really don't understand why Sutter doesn't put Stajan on the first line. He is better in the dot than Moss will ever be and it would make Moss more effective back on OMG, but now I'm just repeating my previous posts.
Anyway their overall play was better than in games 1 and 2, but they went from awful in those 2 games to mediocre in their 4th outing, so there is much more to be desired. Horak continues to impress, especially since I thought he was noticeable with only 7 minutes.
@ChinookArch
I don't think anyone can really rescue the first line outside of Iginla himself. He's not just mediocre, he's an active liability a lot of the time. Stajan isn't going to stop Jarome from falling down, losing the puck in the shallow end of the offensive zone and being a non-entity in the defensive end. The captain has to pull up his socks.
As for Horak, he's on the first bus back to the AHL once Morrison is healthy. Brent has been shaving down his minutes and responsibilities pretty regularly since the first game.
