The overall tally flatters the Flames. The Pens ran away with things in the second period when they outchanced Calgary 13-4 and then sat back a bit in the third when the score was 4-1. The Flames garnered six of their 11 ES scoring chances while chasing in the third period,
The first period was mostly nervous energy and little action of substance aside from Giordano's play to set up Glencross. The wheels fell of in the second and the Penguins took over. The Flames never really recovered despite the noble effort in the third. There was nevertheless some noteworthy performances on the positive side: Gio was excellent at both ends, Glencross shook off his lousy pre-season and Tanguay drove things on the first line. There was a lot left to be desired by other guys, but we'll leave that aside for now.
One addition to the scoring chance charts this year - in the comments section you'll notice +/- numbers. That's me tracking the score differential in the game in order to track the playing to score effect on the chance numbers. For instance, notice how many of the Flames chances came when they were down by a goal or more this evening (9 of 14).
I never paid much attention these last season, but I will this year. I like that it verifies my view of Babchuck and Sarich's play last night, and by that I mean they were underwhelming (that's the kindest description, I can think of since it's only game one). Stempniak and Hannon both looked good overall, and their stats showed that. On the other hand, the results surprised me a bit, I thought Moss was better than his numbers showed last night, statistically he looks liked he was drowning in EV. Maybe the team is better off with him on OMG?
We need someone who won't be a passenger on that top line. Moss even said he's just going to let those two pass the puck to each other. we need someone who will drive play more on the top line.
