Sarich Has Requested a Trade

Rhett Warrener reported this morning that Cory Sarich has asked the Calgary Flames for a trade. Of course, there's a good chance he Flames have been trying to do that for the last year or two and have been unable to find any takers for Sarich's $3.6M cap hit.

A healthy scratch for most of the season, Sarich has tumbled past the likes of Brodie and Smith on the Flames depth chart. His wish to find a more suitable home for his services is understandable, but the gap between his potential abilities and his actual pricetag is pretty large. Sarich isn't the most mobile option on the back-end and his constant battle with chonic issues slows him even further.

The combination of big cap hit and modest skillset is a difficult one. I can't imagine any team will be taking Feaster's calls about Sarich...not until the deeadline at the latest at least when the majority of his ticket has already been paid. Even then, it's probably going to be a tough sell.

I hope it happens for Cory's sake, but I don't think it's very likely.

To forgotten man... You rave about Sarich being spoiled and country club. What's spoiled about wanting to earn your money by actually PLAYING hockey. Spoiled would be happy with getting a paycheck while being happy with doing squat. As for how much they make, cry me a river. Life isn't fair and to quote you, tough luck buttercup.

I'm not wearing rose coloured classes here, but am I the only one who's noticed that the flames have picked up 5 out of a possible 6 points. Just sayin.

Sarich for Paajarvi.

Sarich becomes a 3-4 d-man, we get someone that might have an upside.

Thanks, but we have enough d-men of his calibre.

And a young Paajarvi with no goals and working his tail off each shift is worth more than a pending UFA depth defender with a NTC.

Sarich and a draft pick for Peckham is more likely. Not by much, but more so.

@Derzie

Derzie,

Nobody had a gun to Sarich's head when he signed a contract with the Flames...they pay him for his services. Because they pay him, they can choose to allocate however he is used. If his play is deemed a detriment to the success of the Team then he sits in the Pressbox.

Someone who is not spoiled/country club/entitled does not go whine to his buddies in the Media. He is getting paid. His choices are simple...sit in pressbox, play when given icetime or retire. How hard is that for you to understand. This is how life works Derzie, whether you make 3.6 million or 50G's a year.

If my 10 year old son came home crying cause the Soccer Coach cut him or didn't play him, I'd tell him the exact same thing...believe it or not, we actually learn something from failure and build character from adversity. Sarich running to Warrener is weak tea at best, and pathetic at worst.

Sarich's days are probably numbered. Nobody has mentioned this yet, but it looks like Joe Piskula got the call up today. Never heard of the dude but he is a defenceman and Sarich will likely be sitting in the press box again this weekend.

First to ask for a trade. What's the over under on the amount of players ask to leave Calgary ? Is this a sign players don't want to play in Cowtown ?

More to come E4

He has to waive his NMC for a team to consider it. Re-entry waivers. Sarich has been terrible for a while. Oh and @Frank, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. Good game v Minny and a 1-0 snorefest v a team that has been having trouble scoring. Then a blown 3-1 lead. Not a sign of a cup contender.

Or in the last 6 games, five out of a possible 12 points. That the trouble with numbers! This season is looking like last year, it depends on the timeframe you use...

As an Oilers fan, I feel sorry for Flames fans who are looking for hope, when their management is in denial. I follow the flames sites regularly, and it seems the management should see that that their base is supportive of rebuild. The hardest thing about a rebuild is when your team is lifeless at times. The team has to be competitive, whether they win or loose. The two or three years the Oil really stunk, the last year of being a last place team wasn't painful because the team tried every night. It actually made loosing tolerable in a way.

And how long ago was that? Hey, we all loved the hit...but in sport it's all about,"What have you done for me lately!"

Peckham is legitimately awful. No thanks.

well seeing as how being a oiler fan would make you an expert in players not wanting to play for a team. I will take your word for it.

With Sarich demanding a trade today, who will be the next player asking Feaster the same question? Could it be Iginla?

Perhaps Bourque?

Maybe Kiprusoff?

Or are players like Glencross, Tanguay, and Jokinen wondering why they signed back with the Flames for bargain prices when if they waited could probably be playing somewhere else in the league on another contending team with plenty more pay?

Sarich probably wants out because he is sitting up in the press box watching the players below performing so incompentently on a nightly basis and is wondering why he is not getting the same chance to do the same thing.

With Gio gone for at least a month, are the rookie (inexperience) dmen like TJ Brodie and Derek Smith ready to step up their game another notch?

Or are they going to falter and wilt under pressure like Jay Bouwmeester and Butler did last night in last five minutes of the game?

Haha, man...

this is just too rich. Aren't you guys always saying Edmonton is a crappy organization that no one wants to play for?

Wow... the Flames are on a one way collision course with bottom 5 this year.

Seriously? you are 0-1-1 against the worst nhl team this year?

haha... wow

Good to have you back Todd.

Remember that time when Vanc. finished in the bottom 5 and managed to get 2 top 5 selections? That turned out pretty well for the Nucks didn't it.

We are hoping for something similar this year. It is a hopefull time for a lot of us.

Thanks for your interest.

1. T or F Feaster told reporters that Sarich is an important part of this team. Is he? 2. T or F Feaster and KK told seasons ticket holders that they were optimistic that they would still be able to acquire a number one center after the Richards fiasco. 3. T or F Despite Brent Sutters lack of sucess with this team he's still been given a longer leash than those before him? 4. T or F Brent Sutter had arguably one of THE BEST defensive corps in Darryl Sutter's final year as GM? 5. T or F In the beginning of Darryl Sutter's tenure he brought this team back to respectability when this team had no chance whatsoever at even making the playoffs. 6. T or F Jay Feaster had the option this summer of sending any player down to the Ahl he choose to? During a certain period of time. 7. T or F Wade Redden's salary equals the same amount as Sarich and Stajan. 8. T or F Calgary is one the richest franchises in the NHL. 9. T or F After publicly stating on TSN that this team would make the playoffs, Feaster than went on the FAN960 saying " Well how was I supposed to answer that question...?" 10. T or F After resigning BMO Feaster said he'd be an important part to this team. I don't think he's played in half the games this year, and never on the top line. 11. T or F KK's sucess goes hand in hand with Jarome Iginla. 12. T or F This TEAM is better off trading Iginla for the longterm. 13. T or F Jay Feaster iced the best team he possibly could have to start the year. 14. T or F One Feaster's favorite lines is "...we expect him to compete for a top 6 position...we feel he has the potential to be a top 6 forward..."

He is brutual

Another Darryl Sutter F&^K up.

Does he think the Flames enjoy paying his fat salary to have him take up space in the press box.

What a joke he would been long ago if it wasn't for his stupid contract.

Just to cheer me up I've watched highlights of the game 3 in 2008 with the Sarich hit. Man, what a game! Down 3-0 just over 3 minutes in and come back to win. Let's not talk about the rest of that series... but wow, that was probably one of if not the best Flames game I've watched in a long time. It's nice to reminisce...

Btw- why didn't we re-sign Owen Nolan after that year? Correct me if I'm wrong but he had a pretty good season and playoffs. Sorry for the off topic post...

I don't blame Sarich for asking for a trade. He is in a contract year and needs ice time to show what he has left. Most of the negative comments here are a result of his salary as his play hasn't matched the value. If he sits half the year in the press box, he will never get a new contract and be forced to retire. He has played reasonable 5th/6th line minutes when he has had the chance but high value contracts always look bad in the last few years for aging players. Blame Darryl for that but not Sarich. He always plays hard but, as Kent mentioned, his health issues has affected his play and thus his overall value. I hope we can get a decent draft pick for him.

There are teams out there that will want Sarich but the question is what value do they place on him.

Who would want to play in Calgary right now? I don't blame him. No future, no plan, false hope, ogre/mutant coach.

I actually don't believe Feaster is as completely dellusional as he puts on in the public. Talking about how this team is a few moves away from being back in contention and all that BS. I just don't believe he is that out of whack with reality. He MUST be smart enough to know this team needs to go through a few years (at least) of fixing. The thing I don't get is why he is in denial in public. Is it coming from ownership to not openly admit this team is in shambles?

I'd feel so much better watching this debacle if I felt like there was a plan. I'd fully support it and even cheer through the pain. But sitting that mess of a Feaster sit on TV and talk about how things are fine is starting to wear on me.

Wow you people sure know how to make a mountain out of a mole hill. He asked for a trade because he wants to play. End of story. What should be more of a story is that his supposed friend Rhett took something said between he and Cory and made it public knowledge. And for what? To pretend he's become a breaking news sportscaster? Give me a break!
