Ales Kotalik on Re-entry Waivers

According to Bob McKenzie, the Flames have put Ales Kotalik on re-entry waivers this morning. The move could be for the purposes of recalling him (unlikely) or to allow someone else to scoop him at half his current price for this year and next. If Kotalik does get claimed, the Flames will have $1.5M in dead cap space on their budget next season.

Also of interest is the fact that Nikolai Zherdev was placed on waivers by the Flyers today. The forever maligned russian actually has excellent underlying numbers in Philly this year so I don't know what the issue is with him, but he's a guy who could be worth a look for Calgary. It's a move Darryl Sutter never would have made, so if Feaster wants to start putting his own stamp on the team, claiming Zherdev would be a step in that direction.

Maybe its the Souray affect, and they feel Kotalik is poisoning our Heat players. They feel the penalty is worth it to get him out of the locker room.

Also,

Thanks, I mixed up the years and added in a season somewhere along the line.

I doubt it. If that were the case, they would simply loan Kotalik to another AHL team.

@Resolute

The only other logical thought, which was mentioned above, would be that this is mgmt's way of showing Kotalik that he is stuck in the AHL, and should go to the KHL for next season.

Lets just hope he doesn't get picked up, and goes to the KHL in the offseason!

Good points, but...

1) Its easy for you or I to say just bury them both. Its another for ownership when its their $

2) If they're bringing a player in via trade, most of his contract for this year will be paid already, too.

With the space they already have, this could create additional space. So in theory, they could bring in a player that makes 1.5 to replace Hagman if he were sent down. That would make things even all around. Now throw that 4.5 in space we already have & we could bring in a 6M player (in theory), as opposed to a 4.5M player.

maybe I'm confused, but it appears you're still assuming that re-entry with Kotalik somehow influences assigning Hagman.

I see them as unique to one another other than about 1 million in pocket salary, but that's even debatable at this juncture of the season.

My point is, if Kotalik gets picked up & the Flames are on the hook for a $1.5M cap hit, then I think its a fair assumption they would then assign Hagman to Abby to remove his $3M from their cap, thus actually creating an additional $1.5M in room. Capice?

There have been many times when a team won't pluck a player off waivers and then proceeds to trade for that player. When Huselius came to the Flames for one.

I think often a team prefers or needs to send a player the other way, due to roster or professional contract limits.

So this move may simply be to give Feaster some flexibility. Lots can happen in the last 5 days. If the Flames lose to SJS and STL them perhaps a, "we'll trade you Glencross and Kotalik for your underperforming and expiring contract player" type of deal.

well i hope they are both in khl next year. i had some moderate hopes for hagman this year just doesnt seemed to gel of fit in with anyone. i would like to see the club free up the 6 mill next year. resign tangs at 3 ish and gcross at 2.5 ish that would be a wash for those 2 contract and with lanks out id imagine for next year that is another 4.5 in ltir space. plus cap up a couple mil.

I think with the uncertainy of a playoff position that the flames are in at the moment management maybe getting ready to be sellers as well as buyers. Having Kotalik in a package position along with a more desirable player (Glenx, Tangs, Bork etc.)may intice a team to take him on. We have a pretty tough few games before the deadline and could find our selves on the outside looking in very easily.

Also pretty sure that Kots is not on anyones radar by himself even at 1.5 million, so this move is pretty low risk. Especially with players like Svatos, Rivet,Zherdev on waviers at the same time. And if he is picked off re-entry then 1.5 million is cleared off the books for next year, which is better then his 3 million and Hagmans sitting in Abbotsford for another season. Because really, they're not going anywhere if they're not gone by this deadline.

I guess one other option is this:

We package together a three for one deal including GlenX (our UFA), a "problem contract" like Hagman and a depth prospect.

for Richards (their UFA) for example. (A player Feaster knows well)

Kotalik is being called up to fill in the hole left by the departure of the extra player? Feaster assumes he won't be taken, but is doing this first to be sure.

That way, both teams get first rights at an off-season UFA signing, Dallas gains a prospect and a depth player they can afford who scored 27 goals with them once.

Worst for us: elite rental

Worst for them: depth rental, depth player with one year left on a questionable 3 mil contract, and a prospect.

EDIT: I guess the math doesn't work on that particular example, as I forgot Richards makes 7.8mil, but you get the idea.

Taking Jay at his word, he would like to add a top six forward or a depth d man, but he dosen't want to move a current player, or trade away future draft picks... We don't have much in the way of prospects, so how exactly would he acquire either?

Some kind of waiver deal or swap, we send you our bad contract (that fills a hole on your team)and you send us your bad contract (that might fill a hole on our team) might make sense...

Teams seem willing to pay up for assets before the trade deadline, if I was the GM, I think I would take my chances with the playoffs and do some selling... I might hold off on massive selling, but a player or two for picks...

Maybe its just Feaster saying "You're not coming back to the NHL as a Flame, but here's a chance for someone else to give you a shot - if not, you can go to Europe next year with a clear conscience, and not wondoring what-if."

Lol.. I don't think the Flames or Feaster is really interested in Kotalik's feelings of What-if?? I just think they want the dead weight gone and away from their prospects, where he may be able to inflict negative feelings.

I still say Feaster is no idiot... Or at least I hope he's not.. Something is in the works. Would love to see a package deal put together like suggested by Lawrence, where somehow they get Brad Richards. It would also mean most likely NOT re-signing Morrison.

PSSH - did I say it was about his feelings? what better way of convincing him to leave, than to show him with all certainty, that a return to the NHL is not in the cards.

- and by all accounts, or, at least if you believe Jim Playfair, Kotalik has been a model citizen in Abbotsford, far from "inflicting negative feelings"

Interesting move.

No one will pick up Kotalik at $1.5mill. And Hagman will never play a game in Abby. That's how I see it.

Perhaps Hagman can be packaged for something? Perhaps he can be moved for a 4th round pick?? If he's moved, and you send Kotalik back down after a trade... This makes sense to me.

Perhaps Kotalik goes on the fourth line as his replacement?

Giving up 1.5mill cap space is nuts. Leave Kotalik in Abby.

Richards is too expensive, and not a youngster. We can find a centre for cheaper, methinks.

You move Glencross now, you may kill our momentum. I wouldn't do it.

I'd re-sign Morrison. And Tanguay. Why move Tanguay??

If we're picking up a bad contract, I wonder if it's Lecavalier? But with the Stars cleaning house (as it seems they are...) Could it be Richards? And why take a gamble on Richards now that he has a concussion - no tto mention he'll be 31 soon??

I'd stay away from Richards.

Morrison even said they were pulling for Kotalik, that the guys in the locker room liked him. I've heard the same.

I don't get why we keep talking about getting a pick or packaging guys into deals. If you could have this skating garbage for free, what idiot wants to give up anything for it???? Furthermore, how does packaging anything with hagman or kotalik help us get a better return? It simply implies that we are putting them in to devalue the deal and thus lower our return. On the subject of picks, I love draft picks, but getting rid of glencross for a first round pick is retarded. Picks are never a garauntee, so why would we want to let him go for a "maybe"? Lets just sign him and save a few years of development of a late first rounder who may not turn into anything (nystrom).

I know we are always wanting to see interesting trades, but lets be a tad more sensible about our returns here. blockbuster deal coming our way? Not likely, id love to see it, but it probably will not happen.

I agree, even though I mentioend Hagman being packaged. It won't happen. No one wants these two. Which is why I say leave Kotalik in the AHL - unless they want to eat $1.5mill...

This move makes no sense. At least to me. Why eat $1.5mill now?

If he wasn't available before, maybe he becomes available after his Dad's critical comments regarding the Av's recent moves?

But yes if Stastny was available for trade within the conference, I'd choose him over Richards, but Richards would be most easily, and likely, available.

Haha.. Yeah, Paul is probably cleaning out his locker after hearing his Pops go all open mic night on the Av's broadcast.

From what I understand both Paul and Richards are available now. Richards would have great upside for a playoff push, especially with Iggy and Tangs, but it's a big IF since he isn't even back in the Stars lineup. The concussions could definitely kill any deal. Stastny is a good young player that again, playing with Iggy and Tangs could develop into some true potential. Iggy would be a great mentor for a player like Paul, but in both cases it depends what we are throwing back the other way.

Neither deal could include Calgary's 1st round pick, and unfortunately I thin both would be asking it.

At this rate, I probably wouldn't mind giving up our first round pick to get Stastny, he is young enough that it will probably work out better than the probability of our mid-first round pick will turn into a Paul Stastny or better.

I certainly wouldn't trade the 1st for Richards though, as it would likely be just a rental player situation.

What we have seen this year is it would be a 1st rounder and a high end prospect, Brodie, Nemisz or Backlund, for a guy like Stastny.

I would give a first round pick for Stastny. I'd move Nemisz and a 1st Rounder for Stastny. If that's all it took, I'd make that happen ASAP. His days in Denver may be over, thanks to dear old dad.

Always liked Peter Stastny!

Are there any cheaper centres who could fit between Tangs and Iggy? I'm not thinking Weiss... I'm thinking future, which Stastny could be...

I completely agree.

I think that regardless of this season, a major overhaul needs to occur throughout next offseason, shedding older and overpaid players. A modified rebuild if you will, and a younger proven player can and should be signed to see us through the rebuild year(s).

Stastny is signed for over 6 million, and avalanche are desperately trying to get it off their books, they realize he is not worth it. Lets not do a sutter and get a bad contract back and help out a division rival, unless they take hagman or kotalik back which is highly unlikely

But, Kotalik has that booming point shot the Avalanche so desperately need on the PP. It wouldn't tear me up to offload him or Hagman to the Avs. Unless of course they turn back into 20+ goal guys and burn us 6 times a season.

I only said I'd take Stastny over Richards, and for a 1st round pick/Nemisz.

I also asked if anyone had any ideas about a cheaper option, one under the age of say, 27...?? Obviously, this would eliminate Weiss... Any ideas?

I don't think we need to sign anyone for > $6mill. I think Bouwmeester is grossly overpaid, as well.

But... Stastny would be a nice fit between Tanguay and Iginla. It'd be a trade I could tolerate.

I don't want Richards, Lecavalier, or anyone > 27 years of age. And they need to have some meat on their bones. Stastny's not tiny, even if he's only 6 feet tall (what is he, 210lbs?)

As for Zherdev, I agree with Kent. He's not hurt the Flyers. And Brent Sutter may be able to get him to "buy in". I say he's worth a punt.

Calgary isn't THAT bad. You could end up in Edmonton, or Buffalo, or Atlanta, or playing for the Islanders.

Plus, I'm sure Iginla still holds some clout in the NHL and could coerce someone into joining our locker room for another Cinderella run. Now the NHL has video review and can't steal our Cup winning goal from us.
