Ales Kotalik on Re-entry Waivers

According to Bob McKenzie, the Flames have put Ales Kotalik on re-entry waivers this morning. The move could be for the purposes of recalling him (unlikely) or to allow someone else to scoop him at half his current price for this year and next. If Kotalik does get claimed, the Flames will have $1.5M in dead cap space on their budget next season.

Also of interest is the fact that Nikolai Zherdev was placed on waivers by the Flyers today. The forever maligned russian actually has excellent underlying numbers in Philly this year so I don't know what the issue is with him, but he's a guy who could be worth a look for Calgary. It's a move Darryl Sutter never would have made, so if Feaster wants to start putting his own stamp on the team, claiming Zherdev would be a step in that direction.

I, too, remain surprised Zherdev cleared. At $2mill with 15 goals... Why a team in the race wouldn't take a punt is quite interesting - or quite revealing about the type of personality Zherdev truly is...

Kovalev - for a CONDITIONAL 7th rounder. What in the hell is the condition? He gives a damn? Gently massages Sidney's aching brain? And if they don't make the condition - the return to Ottawa is what? A sweaty gym sock?

Well, I guess we know why Zherdev, Kotalik and Hagman are slipping through the waivers. I mean, for all of Kovalev's "issues" a conditional 7th rounder?

Man, Curtis is a good guy it seems, but luck is having his way with him.

Luck seemed to pick a bad time to turn him into a sieve.

and then...

it sort of shined on him getting him traded to TB, a better team with a better chance of winning I'd say.

Man. There are a lot of underachieving European wingers available right now. Might have something to do with ours clearing.

Per Bob McKenzie: OTT receives conditional 7th round pick for Kovalev. If PIT wins 1st round of playoffs and Kovalev plays 50 per cent of games, it's a 6th.

The only thing Feaster could say that would make the Kotalik re-entry make sense would be that he slipped while hanging a picture in his bathroom and hit his head. When he came to, he realized what made time travel possible.

Anytime you can save your owners 1.5 million it makes sense.

McBackup was traded to the Lightning today. Glad to see he still has some value on the open market.

Hey Kent?

Why are the Heat making roster spots available?

I agree with @otto... chalk it up to nothing more than to try to get rid of a bad contract. Kotalik will be either bought out or in Europe by the summer.

So much for the Bryan Cameron experiment.

Be that as it may, will probably turn out to be Feasters biggest "deadline" move.

No, unless Cameron can somehow unlock a few MPH from his legs, that's the last we have seen of him. Can't skate, can't play in the NHL.

Stillman to Carolina for a 5th and Carter... Why was it that no one picked up Hagman (for nothing) again?

If Jay Feaster were fired today, I doubt THN would hire him back to even be their Starbucks runner.

So now Kots goes back down... Is that the last we'll see of him? I'm starting to beleive the "we gave it a shot - off to Europe with you" line of thinking.

Unless someone gets injured, probably.

Flames now in 10th, but also will be tied for 6th by end of night. Wow this is going to be one of the funnest 20 games I've ever witnessed. Any acquisitions that could improve our team right now?

Surprising to see that everyone still has a game in hand despite the Flames playing two games this week. Brutal schedule. Feaster is in a tough position going into the deadline. If Calgary loses tonight, they could be 4 points back of a playoff spot.
