Robyn Regehr Traded - For Real This Time

Kent Wilson
June 24 2011 10:02PM

According to Darren Dreger, Robyn Reger has agreed to waive his NTC to go to Buffalo. Rumor is, Ales Kotalik is also part of the package which is something that cropped up our talks during FlamesNation radio on Thursday.

No word on the return yet, but getting rid of Kotalik's contract makes the Regehr trade a lot more palatable. Depending on what the Flames get back, it could save the club a whole bunch of cap space and open a lot more options for them come July 1.

Of course, on the other hand, you have the departure of one the cornerstones of this franchise over the past decade and a guy who remains one of it's best defenders. This post is not the venue for a true obituary for Regehr's career in Calgary, but there's no doubt the big guy will be missed a great deal by Flames fans, no matter how well the trade may or may not end up for the team.

We'll update as detail trickle in.

If what Bob MacKenzie says is true, that is brutal. That's all you could get for Reg? Feaster got fisted.

That said, as an outsider, I still like the deal. It's a dump of two contracts. Maybe you can afford to re-sign Tanguay now.

We've been fleeced. Paul Bryon? Chris Butler?? For Regehr???

Is anyone excited by this??

Incredible. Absolutely incredible. Watch Kotalik score 20 goals next season.

@TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie When, or if, deal is done, hearing Paul Byron, Chris Butler and 2nd is what BUF will send to CGY for Regher/Kotalik. Not yet official #tsn

It's pulling the team in two different directions. One, the team is trying to get younger by getting rid of a value contract. The other, they're going to spend way too much money over way too long of a term on a guy who's on the wrong side of thirty. Completely contradictory.

@ Timo, your missing the point here. The Flames weren't looking to offload Regher's contract. He is (was) good value for the services he provides. Kotalik, yeah he can pound sand for all I care.

This news makes me sad, simple as that. One of the most well spoken and thoughtful players ever to grace a Flames uniform. He will be missed, and I certainly hope he returns to the city when he retires, he'd make a great member of the strong local alumni group.

No, I'm not missing the point, I'm disagreeing with it. I disagree that Regehr's worth $4 million per year. Giordano is, and that's what he's paid. Is Regehr as good as Giordano? Trust me, you can do more with $4 million. And much more with $7 million.

All you guys are just disappointed that you'll have to buy a new jersey, right?

Why do you disagree with it? Compared to other contracts for players of his caliber, Giordano is underpaid. Regehr took on the best comp and regularly finished on the positive side in Corsi.

Trade isn't done. Don't think Feaster would make that trade. I seem to remember him talking about our big 3 assets and how he wouldn't move anyone unless the deal was "sweet". No way that's a sweet deal.

If this is the deal than it is a very sad day for our organization. When I first saw it I didn't read the details and only saw Kotalik was involved so I was happy. Now seeing the terms of the deal I want to throw all of Feaster's food away so he can't eat it as punishment for him. Ridiculous. But maybe it won't happen. Not yet official

@Timo, Regher plays against other teams top lines 5vs5, and kills penalties 82 games per year. He is most always a + player at years end, Gio does not do that. Now, Gio may become that player, but currently he isn't. Don't get me wrong, I am glad that Gio is on this team, but they play different roles.

His CorsiRelQCOMP was best on the team, he had the best QCOMP, 2nd best CorsiQoC and had a ZS of 49.9 and a ZF of 52.6.

I find it very dificult to believe that this is the return. We all know Feaster is not a hockey guy but I do doubt he is that dumb to make that deal. The basic logic is i'll give up a top 4 defender for your late round draft long shot 3rd line at best players.

Hey I love to come on here and ham it up and laugh at all the clever things said (thank you all for that) but in all seriousness lets stop jumping out the window before anything is official. What are we canucks fans now???

Now if that is the deal lets organize a protest calling for ken kings head. I'll also fax my resume over for the GM position too while i'm at it.

Feaster is a fool and K-squared is his Master...can't speak for how Edwards runs his Oil & Gas Empire, but he allows the Flames to be run like a nickel n' dime operation - no class. Even if Buffalo wasn't high on Regehr's list for a potential new home (After Detroit, Buffalo is the armpit of the USA), I am sure he just saw it as a ticket out of this sad excuse for a supposedly PROFESSIONAL Sports Organization. Just reinforces why UFA's aren't busting down doors to come here, and solidifies why Erixon bolted town - can't say I blame him at this point.

The saddest part is that a rebuild only works if you have competent, honourable, and classy individuals undertaking it...as it stands we have a Newspaper Huckster and Smooth Talking Lawyer holding the reins - scary days indeed.

John and Justin are right that Regehr plays some of the toughest minutes in the league, and plays them well.

But Timo is also right - Regehr IS overpaid - but only by about $0.5 million.

I looked for all players with ice-time as tough as Regehr's last year, of similar age, and their cap hits were $3.0 to $3.75, not $4.02 like Regehr. (Orpik, Lydman, Stuart, Mitchell, Robidas and Girardi).

Of course, this assumes that the other aren't also overpaid, perhaps that's part of Timo's point.

And the Flames might have gotten more if they had made the deal at least year's trade deadline instead.

But hey - look at the bright side:

1. They got more than Ruslan Zainullin 2. They didn't immediately use the massive cap savings to sign an above-average goalie to ridiculous contract.

And what the heck - call Florida and make a deal for Mike Weaver or Jason Garrison.

A mid 20's bottom pair left defenseman - we've got one of those in Mikkelson - 2 if you resign Pardy.

Don't know why everyone is freaking out, looking at the timeline, apparently the names McKenzie mentioned came from a post by Eklund, so, I'm almost relieved because that's almost a guarantee that the deal is not real. I think everyone has to just sit and wait for the deal to be finalized before they start calling for heads.

So just go to bed babies.

Doesn't the fact that KOtalik ended the year in Abby - he cleared waivers twice mean he's not actually counting against the cap right now ? CapGeek is showing him as a non roster player - so what's the rush to dump him ? It would be a shame to water that deal down to be rid of him.

What have we Flames Fans done to anger the Hockey Gods? Regehr & Kotalik for Byron, Butler and the 2012 2nd round pick would be another kick to the gut, and we have already taken our share.
