The 2013 edition of the IIHF World Junior Championships doesn't get officially going until Boxing Day, but things kick off on the exhibition calendar this morning as Canada faces Finland. The game airs on TSN beginning at 9:30am ET (6:30am PT), live from Vantaa, Finland.

The game is the first chance to evaluate the final roster for Canada and for Finnish fans to prepare for a couple cuts that need to be made before the tournament begins.

Here are the lines for each club, courtesy of TSN's Mark Masters (@markhmasters).

Following the Canada/Finland game, TSN will also be broadcasting the USA/Sweden exhibition game from the same venue. That game is tentatively set to kick off at 12:30pm ET (9:30am PT).

That was my fault. Ryan had the article done last night, but I failed to edit and publish it before going to bed.

Two 5on3 goals against. That'll kill you every time.

How long before we have Definitely Sanity Forbidden, on here telling us that RNH is a subpar leader and not worthy of a 1st. overall pick? And the fact that any Canuck or Wild 1st-5th round pick is superior to him?

My thoughts on the American game so far:

Sieloff comes as advertised. He's a large (he has to be bigger than 6'1" 200) shutdown defenseman who can really move. He's probably one of the better skaters out there, not in terms of speed, but just how well he gets around. His stretch pass is good, and his offensive zone play is... well, safe and unimaginative. But he holds the line. He's kind of meh at even strength (his physical game is hurt a little by the big ice, but he has Robyn Regehred a few guys against the boards) but he's great on the pk.

Gostisbehere and Reilly are kind of hit-and-miss. Mostly miss in Gostisbehere's case.

Aside from a great first shift, McCabe hasn't been noticeable.

Skjei has been invisible aside from a couple dud plays and one good pass to Reilly.

Grzeleck had a great start, but ever since the Murphy goal, he hasn't been noticeable.

Speaking of Murphy, he's probably the best player on either team (aside from Rakell).

After watching Sparks, I like Gillies' chances at the backup gig. He's made a few good saves, but he's out of position on practically every shot.

If Cole Bardreau doesn't make the team, something is very, very wrong.

Of course, this is all based on one period lol.

@Baalzamon

Sieloff didn't look all that big when I saw him in the prospects camp this summer.

Haven't seen too much of the game so far, but every time he's on the ice Galchenyuk is terrifying.

Why no Johnny G? Are the Americans still trimming their roster?

@Bean-counting cowboy

Gaudreau, Miller, Grimaldi, Jones, Trouba, and Gibson are all sitting. I don't think we have anything to worry about.

Ryan Pike is on to something, I think, because Sieloff just screened Gillies on that goal. Of course, the only reason Rakell had that much time, and Sieloff had to leave his spot in front is because Biggs completely misread the play. The cut on forward should be an easy decision (at least based on this game). Biggs has been the worst player for the US by a mile. He's only noticeable when he does something dumb, when he falls down, or when he gets clocked by somebody.

and yes, Galchenyuk is freaking terrifying. I didn't mention it because it would be like saying "Chris Breen is tall."

Honestly, I think Sieloff makes the team (though maybe as the #7). He's mostly useless beyond the center line (though he did have a great give-and-go chance with I think Trocheck late on the 4on4 and nearly scored) but he's pretty steady overall. My main problem with him defensively is he tends to go down to block shots too often, and too early. That's what caused him to screen Gillies on the goal.

Based on this game, I'd say that Biggs and Skjei (IMO) are definite cuts.
