FN Weekend Open Thread - NHL13 League Anyone?

NHL13 was recently released and it may be the closest thing any of us get to NHL hockey for awhile. Recently I've noticed some blogs and communities are starting up GM connected leagues, which sounds like it could be some fun.

Before we officially go ahead with an FN connected league, we'll need to know a few things:

- How many people want to join.

- How many people have Xbox/PS3 - we could do one league for each or just stick to one console if there's an overwhelming majority.

- Any other recommendations for starting a league.

I usually stick to offline play with games I buy, frankly because I don't have the patience to get my ass kicked by some smarmy 12 year old on the other end. I could be convinced to buy the game and engage in a FN league if there's interest here though (I'm a PS3 owner by the way).

So what say you folks? If you want to get involved with an FN league (either Xbox or PS3) leave a comment. If we get enough participants, we can get things going this week.

Once we have all people interested, would we actually draft a schedule of when who plays who?

I have an Xbox BTW

I'd be interested. I have an Xbox.

@Vintage Flame the commissioner chooses how long they want the scheduling period to be. 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks or something like that. You play a set number of games in that period

I might be interested, Kent you know how to reach me if/when you have some details worked out. I have an Xbox as well as a PS3, I could get the game for either.

I'd be interested (xbox, sorry KW). You can set your team so that if you really can't make it online your opponent can play/sim against the CPU.

I'd be in for it. I've got an Xbox. Has anyone here played the game? How good is it?

That being said, I can't start till Thanksgiving weekend cause my Xbox is not with me at the moment. After that though I'd be all for it

@Vintage Flame oh okay. I'm commish for another league right now, we've been using a subreddit, FB group and posting messages on the league. Maybe we could use a weekly FN post?

@Kent I'm assuming we'll just have people choose one team to start? As a purely-GM league?

I would definitely be interested. I've played quite a bit of NHL 13 and I'd say it's the best incarnation of the series since NHL 07. I play on the Xbox.

I'm yentatively interested, but have to buy the game. I have small kids so time isn't my most plentiful asset. I'm an X-Box guy.

Xbox or PS3? Bah, you need to see what Hartnell's locks look like on my Atari 2600. Awe-inspiring!

I'm in on X-box. The only real question is who gets the flames? I guess doing a team draft would be the simpelest solution.

FYI I think on connected mode you can play as players too if there are people here that are interested in playing but not managing.

Well I'll probably create the league, and the rules will probably be pretty loose (much like they are around here)

A GM league would be a ton of fun. I'm on XBox. As for the team thing I haven't done the connected mode but im guessing we can still do a fantasy draft? Haha even better, we do a fantasy draft AND get a live chat going. That would be sweet. but I guess Xbox live we probably can do voice chat anyways

I'm on Xbox, sounds like a great idea!! Don't have the game yet but can buy it. Is there a max # of teams per league?

I think you can only have 30 teams per league, but that you can have a bunch of user controlled players on each team. Looks great!

I would be in. I have the game for the PS3. I own an Xbox 360 and could get the game for that if you can't create a league across both systems.

Definitely a cool idea, I'm down for Xbox, I believe up to 6/7 people can be on any one team with the included option of being the coach (kinda pointless).

I know this is a flames site, but starting a gm mode you would really want the flames. I guess a lot of flames fans would want to get their fix by trading Iggy and Kiprusoff. You would have a lot of work to do. Anyways, you can set the teams on random. The league does an auto fantasy draft and it balances the teams fairly good. (warning if your team has crosby you likely got 1st and 60th pick). After the draft is done each team depth and prospects are filled with their actual players, (ex Flames Bartschi. oilers Yakupov ect,). Picking a team with loaded junior and AHL talent is the way to long term success.

Side note, I am philly in my league and for some reason I have Jayden Schwartz as a prospect. However most other systems line up.

@kidgloves

EA updates the rosters periodically. Not sure how the lockout will effect future updates though... Baertchi should be on the Flames roster though... Likely not in the starting lineup, but "in the system"

I'm not sure if Baertschi is "in the system", but he's rated pretty highly for EA CHL Standards. Probably a lot better than a 68. That means we'd all have to exchange gamertags though right?

if there is a league i would like to take the oilers. then run them into the ground. since we don't know when hockey would be back this would make me happy. resign rehab for 4 more years! god we need hockey back. i hate the owners and players. that is all

@Austin L

If you take the Flames in a GM connected league (current rosters), you will have Baertchi on your team but not on the main roster. Not Cervenka though. Although Cervenka was rated a 76 in NHL 12 which translates to a fourth liner anyhow.
