Flames Weekend Guide, January 18 2013

There is snow on the ground and hockey on the ice. It is probably a weekend of the year between September and March. For your viewing pleasure, please enjoy this brief overview of what is happening in Calgary Flames-related hockey action this coming weekend.

NHL

The National Hockey League begins its 95th season of play on Saturday with a lot of games. The Calgary Flames begin their 41st season (and 33rd in Calgary) on Sunday afternoon against the San Jose Sharks.

Dennis Wideman will make his Flames debut, Hudler might make it back for the season opener and Sven Baertschi will begin his first NHL season. Beyond that, it will be a very familiar Flames club on the ice.

There will probably be coverage of the NHL games somewhere on this site. I just have a feeling.

AHL & ECHL

The Abbotsford Heat will play Milwaukee on Saturday and Sunday. Heat will gain some bodies back from Flames camp – definitely Ben Street and Chris Breen, probably Brett Carson and Paul Byron, and possibly one or two of Roman Horak, Leland Irving and Henrik Karlsson. The Heat, despite missing most of their best players, have won twice in a row after beating Hamilton this week.

Oh yeah, Barry Brust will join Heat captain Quintin Laing at the AHL All-Star Game. Go Brusty!

The Utah Grizzlies will host the Bakersfield Condors on Friday and Saturday. Mitch Wahl was named to the All-Star Team, as was C.J. Severyn, a former Flames pick that plays for the Idaho Steelheads. Wahl's in Abbotsford, though, and may be replaced.

JUNIOR

Laurent Brossoit (of Edmonton) and Turner Elson (of Red Deer) both play the same teams this weekend. The Oil Kings play Medicine Hat on Friday and Prince George on Sunday, while the Rebels face Prince George on Saturday and Medicine Hat on Sunday. Brossoit has been excellent lately.

Tyler Wotherspoon's Portland Winterhawks continue to hone their team for a playoff drive this weekend. They host Lethbridge on Friday and then visit the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday. Michael Ferland and the Saskatoon Blades play Moose Jaw on Friday and Brandon on Saturday.

Brett Kulak's Vancouver Giants continue to basically play out the string against Victoria on Friday and Kelowna on Saturday. The Swift Current Broncos (and Coda Gordon) tangle with the Regina Pats on Saturday.

A clash of the QMJHL titans happens Friday in Quebec City. The Remparts (and Flames pick Ryan Culkin) clash with the powerhouse Halifax Mooseheads. It will be a battle of the league's best teams. After that, the Remparts welcome Rouyn-Noranda to town on Sunday.

And finally, Patrick Sieloff's Windsor Spitfires visit the London Knights on Friday and host the Sarnia Sting on Sunday.

COLLEGE

The Boston College Eagles continue their quest for another NCAA championship this weekend. Johnny Gaudreau and Bill Arnold (and their teammates) host Massachusetts on Friday and visit Northeastern on Saturday.

After a close 2-1 loss to U-Mass Lowell on Thursday, Providence College (home of Mark Jankowski and Jon Gillies) visit New Hampshire on Saturday.

The Wisconsin Badgers (and captain John Ramage) host Miami University on Friday and Saturday. Matthew Deblouw's Michigan State Spartans have a home and home with Ferris State Friday and Saturday. Nick Larson and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish host Alaska on Friday and Saturday.

EUROPE

The Kontinental Hockey League is back after their All-Star Break. Karri Ramo's team visits HC Lev Praha (the team Roman Cervenka and Jiri Hudler played for during the lockout) on Friday and then heads to Slovakia to play Slovan Bratislava on Sunday.

Backed by Joni Ortio's goaltending and Markus Granlund's attempts to score goals, HIFK Helsinki have a home-and-home against HPK on Friday and Saturday. HPK is based in the city of Hämeenlinna, about 100 kilometers outside of Helinski.

As always the train keeps a rolling, thanks Ryan!

So what is going to happen with the goalies? Irving and Karlsson placed on waivers and a few teams are sniffing around right now (Edmonton's Khabibulin is injured with no report on how injured)

Could we be contemplating bring up either Brust or Taylor?

Certainly there is no way we are bringing Rammo back here now, but the whole situation is precarious. I would imagine it could work out nicely to loose one of the two and have a contract open up for Taylor.

Having someone play 8-10 games this year should would be decent!

@Clay

That was some pretty nice stickhandling to set up that goal. I really question some of the media outlets saying the Flames need to trade their aging stars and get picks cause they dont have any young player to be excited about.

Personally I'm stoaked for Brodie, Baertschi and Backlund this season, and to a lesser extend Horak. And future potential players like Jankwoski and Guardreau look pretty promising also. I like the defensive options of Rienhart and Arnold too.

I like the youth Feaster is stockpiling. I think if we get more picks for this upcoming draft we will be perfectly fine youth wise in the future.

So far it looks like recently we have picked very well in the last few drafts. If we can keep up the quality and do the same again this year then we are definitely in good shape.

On the other hand ff we end up bombing this year and trading away at the deadline (JBO,Cammi, Tangs, iggy)? We could really have some stockpile if drafted top 3 and added 2 firsts through trade.

Holy crap, that was absolutely sick!!! Janko has some sweet hands and vision. Plays like that will give him confidence.

Gillies made some pretty stellar saves as well. That teams defense looks terrible, though.

Awesome vid! If Janko works out the way we're hoping, I may end up building a personal shrine to Weisbrod.

Irving on practice ice with Kipper. Sounds like he's the back-up.

With a couple of younger goalies in the pipeline, its likley the last chance for Irving to remain a Flame. With the 48 game season he is only going to get a few opportunities to prove himself (4 maybe 5 starts?), so he needs 2 - 3 wins and a reputation for standing on his head, for the opportunity to come back next season. Tough order, but like Backlund, its up to the player to step up. Opportunity is knocking...

I agree that the team has added some nice talent over the last few drafts, though we could use more. Not much contributed at the NHL level yet, but there is reason for optimism. However, it seems to me that the way to get "more picks for this upcoming draft" is to "trade their aging stars". Not sure of any other way to add those picks, at least if you are thinking of adding first round picks and or young high end prospects.

Hey Kent, or anyone else with more knowledge than I in these matters, would Karlsson have had to clear waivers if we were going to send him to Europe?

Just hoping for an off chance that we somehow make a "trade" with Ramo's KHL team. Maybe not right away but before our season ends.

I can't say for certain.

great work by the commentators to not mention Jankowski ONCE even though he was that entire play. All they could talk about was how Mauermann made such a great play by not fumbling the pass. Because that's basically all he did.

I noticed the same thing, oh well we know it was gold. Here's hoping we have another Gaudreau in the system. Another asset that people don't mention very often is Arnold, he could be interesting.

Yea, I think Arnold could be converted to a RW (right hand shot) and replace Nemisz as our future 3rd line RW with, maybe, Reinhart & Ferland. That could be a big somewhat skilled 3rd line for us someday.

Nice highlights...and hey Jon Gillies is our draft choice too...looked good early in that 7 minute package. But YES, Jankowski's nice stick-handling and pass NOT even mentioned...what the heck! That's why they are college TV guys!!!

@suba steve

Well this draft class seems to be pretty deep so even a couple second rounders or a third could help get some more potential for the future. There are other ways to aquire those picks than trading your stars.

They really have to see this Irving thing through. Give him enough rope to hang or save himself.

I always liked Taylor. Called that out last year, that he should be signed. He's still young enough. They need to sign Taylor. Let Karlsson go. Somehow.

Thanks for the sweet link. Wow! Filthy is right! The play by play man sucked! He gives all the credit to the goal scorer and doesn't even mention Jankowski ! He set the whole thing up! Like the old Mario Lemieux to rob brown type goals where all brown does is tap it in. silk hands jankowski! Can't wait to see him develop! Diamond in the rough!

Granlund with a goal and an assist yesterday as well. 3 points on his teams 4 goals on the weekend, 2G and 4A in his last four. All of their draft picks for the last two years are looking like good value picks so far.
