I sure as hell didn't want Burke. That team in Anaheim was more or less gift-wrapped for him when he took over for Bryan Murray and we've seen what a mess the Leafs are (other than two great goalies they're putrid).

I'm one of the 12 people who thought Feaster did a decent job.

This seems nutty! I think our drafting has been pretty great, and may have unearthed some gems. We are in the middle of the rebuild, and the two main architects get canned??

Sigh.

Great timing from Burke. Merry christmas Feaster.

That's my thought as well. Face punchers and grit players seem to be allowed to make mistakes. If a skill guy makes a mistake he either spends a game watching or gets demoted to the 4th line.

Ok, now that the shock has passed (I was sort kinda thinking Feaster and Burke would get along and that Feaster and Weisbrod would get a chance to see this thing work - even though all the evidence of the past was that Burke typically cleans house and rebuilds things his way), here are some thoughts;

- Expect trades. Burke is something of a wunderkind at getting building blocks from other teams in highway robbery deals. It's his biggest redeeming virtue (Pronger, Kessel, the Sedins, Phaneuf, JVR, etc., etc.).

- He likes Americans and isn't so hot on Russians (not much different than Feaster really).

-- You can expect us to swing at every Milan Lucic prototype at the draft. Big kids who can skate and shoot a little. That said, he has an eye for talent, and when push comes to shove, he takes skill guys over busts (he identified that the Sedins were the best players in their draft year, rather than Brendl or Stefan, who were more highly rated, and over Tim Connolly who once upon a time was an American born skill pivot considered to have promise as a #1 center).

- Expect horrific roster construction for the 4th line. More Brian McGratten's fewer NHL hockey players.

- He is going to 'accelerate' the rebuild at every opportunity. Waiting for a group of kids to develop isn't his style. He'll bring in vets, etc. to keep the team as competitive as possible while hee gradually puts together a new core of players.

Amazing how bad the Calgary media is. How does that press conference go by without anybody asking about the Ryan O'Reilly fiasco and how much that contributed to the decision. Burke was giving pretty straight forward answers...

The moment Burke was hired, I felt Jay was done. The moment Jay was hired, I felt the Sutter was done. I'll leave it at that.

Never liked Feaster. The Regher trade was a joke. And I felt a better GM could have parlayed more for Iggy and JBo. The Reilly fiasco was, indeed, a fiasco. The Jankowski pick was not prudent.

This is good news for players like Ferland, wh can punch face and play hockey. He's Burke's kind of player. So is Poirier. I think these two will get a long look here.

Not so great for Sven, but maybe Backlund can become what he really always has been - a third line, two-way centre. Me thinks he'll get his chance.

I also wonder what this means for Troy G. Ward. He's a Yank. I have always liked him. But Burke does like the seasoned coaches, which Hartley is. And Hartley likes to play with an edge. Sven has no edge. Nor does Backlund, but I still think Backlund may get more of a look.

Certainly Colborne has found a home back home, in Calgary! Wonder what it means for Ramo and Berra. I do think Burke will move Cammy, though didn't he want him in Toronto? I can see Burke looking at guys like Wayne Simmonds... And I do like the philosophy of the 3rd and 4th lines Burke wants to pursue. Still, I can't stand the guy. And I felt the same way about Burke here, as I did when I read Keenan was coming. Never liked Keenan, either. But Keenan did well here, I think. If we weren't so banged up vs. the Hawks that year, who knows how we would have done.

In many ways, it's like going backwards in time. Wierd, but I'm not really surprised. Shanny might be a good GM. Jason Botteril would be better.

@MichaelD

yeah, i'm not sure that there is even enough variance in these data to say that one team is definitively bigger than the others. however, the statement "successful teams are big[ger] teams" is patently false. successful teams are roughly the same size as other teams, and often a little smaller.

the point is that burke is presenting us with an organizational philosophy that is based on an obviously false premise.

I'm not surprised, ever since Brian Burke was hired a lot people including myself were just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Despite Brian's denial at the time, no GM's job is safe. A lot of things probably went into the decision like the returns Feaster got for Iggy, Jay-Bo and Reg. I bet there was a lot of fear of what Feaster would get in return for a guy like Cammy.

Jay: John and I really like this player. Brian: I don't like him.

That was a very telling moment, he has a very different view of evaluating player talent. He inherited the team in Anaheim from Burke and pretty much built the Leafs. However, I want Calgary to be a Chicago or a Boston powerhouse team. I don't want to rebuild like the Leafs and give up 50 shots a night. I have a feeling Hartley will be next.

See that's the thing I hate about Burke... he seems to think that Big = Good and that's just not true. Boston and LA aren't strong teams because they have big players they have big player yes but those same players are also highly skilled and I just don't get the impression that Burke sees the difference.

I'd rather the Flames be like Chicago then either of those two teams and Chicago isn't big at all.

@Parallex

In all fairness to Brian Burke he did draft one of the most skilled big players in the league (Getzlaf)....

Also Corey Perry during his draft year was not considered a first rounder by most... But that paid off big time for Anaheim and Perry could be considered a "big" player as well at 6'3". The Sedins are also "big" players at 6'2".

Truthfully I was surprised. Most would say Feaster has been okay. (Don't think that you can argue that he has been brilliant or truly terrible. Some good some bad.)

I have heard some proclaim that if they made a massive RoR blunder in their line of work that they would have been fired right then. None of us will ever know the exact reasoning but I gotta think that Janko, RoR, Iginla fiasco, JBo move etc. contributed to decision.

If nothing else I expect that fans will have more to comment on. Burke is never boring....

@Andy7189

My favourite part of the press conference, as I was waiting for the explanation, was how Burke kept giving legitimate reasons to fire someone, but then kept backing off that, and had it boil down to "I know how to win". Very KLowe-esque.

"We need someone who can nail the draft, we need a homerun... And Jay did that this year.

The hardestpart of a rebuild in TO was getting out from under the contracts... And Jay has left us in good shape there.

But I know how to win, so trust me... This change had to be made"

(These are actual (close) quotes from the press conference, not something I'm making up for humorous effect)

Not surprising. Brian Burke has always gone for the big, strong guys. Jay Feaster seems to have preferred to draft smaller, more skilled players. So there is clearly a difference in philosophy.

All in all, I think everyone expected that Jay Feaster wouldn't survive the entire rebuild. It appears he got his head chopped off a little sooner than expected.

Timing is a little strange, but not really. There really isn't all that much going on right now - with the Burke imposed Christmas trade freeze, now was as good a time as any during this season to institute the change.
