@Reidja
My mom certainly thinks so.
@RexLibris
The only way a first and third is worth more to the Flames than O'Reilly down the road is if they finish in the lottery this year and the kid they could have picked becomes a Tavares or better level superstar.
Thanks for stopping by Mr. Positive! I guess when Hall and Nugent-Hopkins have 4 goals combined on the year you start trolling for kicks...
Avs will match, then trade him to Flames for McGratten.
conspiracy! this is just to deflect on the mcgrattin signing.
@Kurt
no, he is. you're wrong. sorry.
I can at least back this move, even though I honestly believe that almost any time a player has signed an offer the sheet the smarter thing has been to take the compensation.
In O'Reilly's case I believe this to be true, but it does assertively address an organizational need.
That is a huge QO, though. Basically means you've got to get him re-signed prior to him hitting RFA status or you're paying a lot of money (more than he's likely worth at that point).
Thank goodness that the Jets wanted too much for Olli Jokinen!!!! This is BOLD and completely refreshing for a moribund franchise.
I hate Feaster and I hate the Flames.
However, I give him mad props as at least he had the stones to go for it.
Our boy, Tambi, sits and waits and waits and waits....
So far the naysayers break down as being either Oilers fans, or Flames fans who think we aren't imitating the Oilers failing ways enough.
2 years was stupid IMO. Should have been 4 years.
Still have our first rounder!!!!!!! WWWWOOOOOTTTTT!!
Thank goodness....
Nathan McKinnon is WAY better than Ryan OReilly.
On the plus side, at least the Avs are now stuck paying what they refused to pay for a player who probably does not want to play for them, and they can't trade him, and he may be a free agent in just two years. With any luck, he'll remember who helped him get paid this time.
You are dreaming if you think we get McKinnon in the draft.
Good point, now perhaps Feaster can come to Sherman with a trade proposal for Stastny.
With Colorado likely to be moving to a new division/conference next season, there shouldn't be as much reticence to trade to a northwest division partner.
Good for Feaster to have made the offer, but it will be better for the Flames in the long run to retain the picks.
Is this the straw that breaks the (very large Feasting) camels back? Now we missed that gilt edged opportunity to fix the centre and give Iggy a red hot go (ahem) at the Cup, trading he and Kipper for picks in a deep draft can now only be the most sensible option
It only really pisses off Colorado as they have drawn out the process too long.
The only GM it might've pissed off is Colorado's. And given the extended negotiations, I don't even know if he's mad about it.
I just pooped.
edit: hollllyyyyyyyy ffffffffkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk - ed.
Apparently the offer is for 2 years with an average of $5M per. I don't know why they'd only limit it to 2 years given it increases the chances the Avs match, but...at least they're trying.
YES!!!
Holy carp.
This totally excuses the McGratten trade
I thought for sure this was a sarcastic humour piece. Is serious?!?
Omg I'm in shock
@mk
Yup. THEY ACTUALLY DID IT.
No more first rounders anymore, Better make the Playoffs!!!
How long do the Avs have to match?
Nathan MacKinnon or Seth Jones to the Avalanche.
If the Avs dont match what do we give up.... sounds like the way it was built it will be a 2nd and 3rd. Am I right?
@schevvy
48 hours is my guess.
What a S#$tshow. Are you serious?
So much for getting a lottery pick. Glad we can build our future core around a guy who is 1 year removed from 20pts. And at his best got 55pts.
Feaster is a total idiot. well, at least we know where the team stands. Going all in on 8th place. Cause you never know baby! Right Feaster.
I'm just praying Colorado matches.
@Fats
First and third if they walk away.
What is the compensation paid for $5M AAV?
Edit: I see everyone got to that before I posted. Interesting...
@kentwilson
I was excited to when i first heard it on TSN radio until I heard two years. Avs will probably match and then trade him to someone else. They don't want him in the same division. Atleast we are trying to do something positive.
O'Reilly is 21!! He's not an old guy. Most likely better than most picks in the draft this year. And he's a centre.
Oh this could go horribly wrong!! Doubt the Avs match, they will just want to screw us out of the picks!!! We better make the playoffs now!!
I'm glad they did... but I'm surprised at only two years! Avs will match...
26 pts 26 pts 55 pts (18 goals)
Only in Calgary does a couple of 20pt seasons followed by a 55pt one with only 18goals get you $5 million bucks.
And we laughed at the Oilers signing Hemsky for 5 million (a proven PPG player when healthy).
Should have offered at least three years..
I'm sure any other team can do better..
@schevvy
A lot of players peak at 21!!! Patrice Bergeron hasn't come close to his point totals at 21. This draft is loaded, all 30 first rounders have the potential to be stars!!! We better not give away a Top. 10 Draft Pick!!!
@Kurt
He's played 3 years for Christ sakes. Jeez
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
As per @DarrenDreger, Flames sign Ryan O'Reilly to offer sheet, two years, $10 M. Key is Year 2 at $6.5 M; that's big QO in two years
Qualifying offer would need to be $6.8M in two years. That is a lot of money for a guy that is not a superstar center.
If the Avalanche match then they cant trade O'Reilly for one year if I understand correctly. Or is it they just cant trade him to the Flames for one year?
@McRib
Very, very few players peak at 21. I'm sure Kent will back me up on this
I'd take O'Reilly for two years at 5 mil over Hemsky anyday. He's had one season with over 50 games played since 08/09.
Wow, this is great. Interesting that it happens a few hours before the Avs play the Flames.
@Kurt
He led the Avs in ice time, quality of competition, points and possession last year. At 20 years old.
That is a high level player.
Great move!!! My only concern is the limited term of 2 yrs. He could walk in 2 years and we lost 2 high drafts in a deep draft!
