FGD: Colorado Visits Again - UPDATE Iginla scratched

Ryan Pike
March 27 2013 02:25PM

Two of the NHL's lowest-ranked teams clash tonight in the Scotiabank Saddledome with both of their playoff chances rapidly fading from sight. The Calgary Flames (12-15-4, 4.1% playoff chance) host the Colorado Avalanche (11-6-4, 0.8% playoff chance) at 8pm on TSN and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

The Flames are coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss last night in Chicago and are an uneven 3-7-0 in their last ten, but they're riding a seven-game winning streak at home. The Avs have been idle since a 3-2 loss to Vancouver on Sunday, but are equally poor (3-7-0) lately and boast one of the NHL's worst road records at 2-10-3. They're the only NHL club worse than Calgary on the road.

With two teams playing mostly for pride now, it'll be very interesting to see how this one plays out – particularly with the Avs playing for Seth Jones now and the Flames trying to keep their faint mathematical playoff hopes alive. Colorado has won the first two meetings between the teams this season by scores of 6-3 and 5-4.

THE LINE-UP

The Flames got absolutely slammed with shots against Chicago, getting out-gunned 35-16 and being on their heels the entire time. But that was a road game, and the Flames seem to have a strange confidence about them in home games. Things just seem to go well.

Given that it's the back-end of a back-to-back, the Flames didn't have a full morning skate (it was an optional) and line combinations are now guess-work. Here's how they lined up at the end of their game against Chicago:

  • Glencross-Backlund-Iginla
  • Tanguay-Cervenka-Cammalleri
  • Hudler-Stajan-Stempniak
  • Comeau-Begin-Jackman

  • Brodie – Bouwmeester
  • Giordano – Wideman
  • Butler – Sarich

  • Kiprusoff

As per Pat Steinberg's Twitter (and the Flames), Miikka Kiprusoff will sit after being shelled with shots over his last two games. Joey MacDonald will suit up in his stead. Also, expect some line-up changes given the back-to-back. I'd wager that Brian McGrattan and Derek Smith will sneak back into the line-up, but that's just me guessing.

THE OPPOSITION

Like the Flames, the Avalanche are coming off of a loss that was worse than the score reflected – a 3-2 setback on Sunday against the Canucks. Colorado also lost two key parts of their line-up to injury – forward Paul Statsny and defender Ryan Wilson.

Here's their lines as of the end of the Vancouver game:

  • McGinn-Duchene-Parenteau
  • Olver-O'Reilly-Landeskog
  • McLeod-Mitchell-Hejduk
  • Bordeleau-Stastny-Kobasew

  • Zanon-Hejda
  • Johnson-Hunwick
  • O'Brien-Wilson

  • Giguere

I'd expect Semyon Varlamov to start, Tyson Barrie to replace the injured Wilson and either David Jones or Aaron Palushaj to replace Statsny. The Avs remain a fairly talented team that has really, really underachieved this year. They've also had to deal with some injuries and absences, but thankfully (for them) Ryan O'Reilly is back and getting his legs under him with three goals and 11 points in 12 games (yay).

SUM IT UP

It's beyond crunch time. Wins are needed to stay alive. The Flames will have to play a smart game to play a rested Colorado team, particularly coming off a very disappointing performance against Chicago. Of course, on the

Only three games remain until the trade deadline.

UPDATE - Jarome Iginla won't play tonight. That means he will likely be moved within the next 24 hours.

That's quite the shot by Cammalleri. Terrible angle, but made it work.

Once a trade does happen, might I suggest a new Flames fan phrase: "Iggy would've..."

Allow me to demonstrate: Iggy would've buried that shot. Iggy would've stopped that goal. etc.

MacDonald teases us with a big save , and the shows his true skill set - Brutal. Kipper turned 32 how many years back ? This is our succession readiness plan ? Seriously ? I love our Team , but as for our managing ownership and front office - they all should be ashamed . Calgary is the worst Team in Canada. King and Edwards thought we were "pieces" away. Welcome to hockey purgatory. It Kills me to be the butt end of jokes for other Hockey fans. We have all the fan support , and none of the management needed to be a real power house Organization.

Feaster hasn't done a good job managing contracts, either.

I'm glum from the prospect of Feaster and Wesibrod "rebuilding" the Flames. Frightened, in fact.

I'd be willing to bet they wait until the off-season to announce a new captain. Assuming they don't just roll three A's indefinitely.

I completely hear ya , but temper my anger towards Jay never miss a Feaster as i strongly believe he has had way too much upper interference , and far to little reign to act as a real empowered GM.Plus he inherited such a pile of dung contract wise from Duhryl.....

But it does raise questions as to who does next year.

Giordano, Glencross or maybe Cammalleri?

Feaster quit the Lightning because he called the interference from ownership too much to handle - it was right on the eve of the Lecavalier signing.

I'm not sure if that is reassuring.

Very curious to see if there's an extension coming out of this. My guess is no, given the return.

If Iggy isn't committed to the Bs next year, is there room for him to ride off into the sunset a flame? Would the team even want him back?

When he's gone, he's gone. It's like a relationship, it has to be over so both sides can heal and move on. For better or worse the Iginla era in Calgary is over (at least with him as a player), time to let someone else grab the torch.

OK, but lets assume he wants to come back. What then? Playing a maximum of 3 months across the continent from home and playing an entire season like that are probably very different things to himm.

Retirement is probably out of the question, even if he does win it all.

Assuming no extension is included in the deal, Boston will obviously try to lock him up. I kind of doubt that he'd be down for it, given what Jarome has always said publicly here.

As an aside, Bruins fans should be required, as a condition of the deal, to learn to spell Jarome's name! Judging by what I've seen so far, God help him if any of them try to spell out his full name!

The Boston pick today would be the 24th overall. Players mentioned in that range are Santini, Hagg, Horvat, Bowey, Hartman and Mantha.

I'd take either Horvat or Mantha, personally. Or trade down and try to get Tristan Jarry and Samuel Morin.

Visions of Mtl's last to first year-over-year?

Close to home?

Playing with friends?

All the love from the city?

A love of chinooks?

I don't know...all sounds kinda hokey, I admit. And it's tricky either way.

This is a bit off-topic, but I remember getting over my hatred of Chris Pronger pretty quickly when the conditional 1st round pick in the trade was if the Ducks won the Cup.

They did.

We drafted Jordan Eberle.

So basically either

A) re-sign in Boston

Or

B) Come back to Calgary! :)

That being said, how can you have a conditional 1st round pick in 2013, when the draft is before free agency?
