FGD: Colorado Visits Again - UPDATE Iginla scratched

Ryan Pike
March 27 2013 02:25PM

Two of the NHL's lowest-ranked teams clash tonight in the Scotiabank Saddledome with both of their playoff chances rapidly fading from sight. The Calgary Flames (12-15-4, 4.1% playoff chance) host the Colorado Avalanche (11-6-4, 0.8% playoff chance) at 8pm on TSN and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

The Flames are coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss last night in Chicago and are an uneven 3-7-0 in their last ten, but they're riding a seven-game winning streak at home. The Avs have been idle since a 3-2 loss to Vancouver on Sunday, but are equally poor (3-7-0) lately and boast one of the NHL's worst road records at 2-10-3. They're the only NHL club worse than Calgary on the road.

With two teams playing mostly for pride now, it'll be very interesting to see how this one plays out – particularly with the Avs playing for Seth Jones now and the Flames trying to keep their faint mathematical playoff hopes alive. Colorado has won the first two meetings between the teams this season by scores of 6-3 and 5-4.

THE LINE-UP

The Flames got absolutely slammed with shots against Chicago, getting out-gunned 35-16 and being on their heels the entire time. But that was a road game, and the Flames seem to have a strange confidence about them in home games. Things just seem to go well.

Given that it's the back-end of a back-to-back, the Flames didn't have a full morning skate (it was an optional) and line combinations are now guess-work. Here's how they lined up at the end of their game against Chicago:

  • Glencross-Backlund-Iginla
  • Tanguay-Cervenka-Cammalleri
  • Hudler-Stajan-Stempniak
  • Comeau-Begin-Jackman

  • Brodie – Bouwmeester
  • Giordano – Wideman
  • Butler – Sarich

  • Kiprusoff

As per Pat Steinberg's Twitter (and the Flames), Miikka Kiprusoff will sit after being shelled with shots over his last two games. Joey MacDonald will suit up in his stead. Also, expect some line-up changes given the back-to-back. I'd wager that Brian McGrattan and Derek Smith will sneak back into the line-up, but that's just me guessing.

THE OPPOSITION

Like the Flames, the Avalanche are coming off of a loss that was worse than the score reflected – a 3-2 setback on Sunday against the Canucks. Colorado also lost two key parts of their line-up to injury – forward Paul Statsny and defender Ryan Wilson.

Here's their lines as of the end of the Vancouver game:

  • McGinn-Duchene-Parenteau
  • Olver-O'Reilly-Landeskog
  • McLeod-Mitchell-Hejduk
  • Bordeleau-Stastny-Kobasew

  • Zanon-Hejda
  • Johnson-Hunwick
  • O'Brien-Wilson

  • Giguere

I'd expect Semyon Varlamov to start, Tyson Barrie to replace the injured Wilson and either David Jones or Aaron Palushaj to replace Statsny. The Avs remain a fairly talented team that has really, really underachieved this year. They've also had to deal with some injuries and absences, but thankfully (for them) Ryan O'Reilly is back and getting his legs under him with three goals and 11 points in 12 games (yay).

SUM IT UP

It's beyond crunch time. Wins are needed to stay alive. The Flames will have to play a smart game to play a rested Colorado team, particularly coming off a very disappointing performance against Chicago. Of course, on the

Only three games remain until the trade deadline.

UPDATE - Jarome Iginla won't play tonight. That means he will likely be moved within the next 24 hours.

Cool, well I always saw him shooting up ice top speed, good to see the underlying numbers still reflect that. He's on $3.75 for 2 more seasons though

He did trade Brad Richards, so either Murray Edwards and Ken King allowed it or Iggy asked for a trade behind closed doors. I think its the former not the latter.

BOS has also been in talks with the Oil for Whitney. 3 way trade? What old EDM want back from BOS or CGY?

We might end up with a better prospect if it was a 3 way.

Heard Paajarvi's name tossed around. Like his speed.

Per the know-it-alls: Bob McKenzie noted the speculation is Iginla will be traded to the Boston Bruins, and mentioned Matt Bartkowski and Alex Khokhlachev as potential pieces headed to Calgary in return.

So let's hope it is both those guys PLUS the first rounder or at least a 2nd rounder.

More interesting quotes from Bobby Mac.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie said the move does not necessarily mean that a deal is imminent or even close but the Flames may simply be protecting a trade asset. With speculation that Iginla could be headed to the Boston Bruins, McKenzie added that Matt Bartkowski and Alex Khokhlachev could be headed to Calgary in return.

McKenzie also warned that Calgary could be using the Boston offer to leverage other teams interested in Iginla.

As much as I wanted this now that its happening I'm surprisingly pretty sad. The only thing that will make it easier is seeing him hoist the cup. Pitts isn't unstoppable and if Iggy ends up there my love for Boston quickly grows.

Iggy deserves an ending so much better than this. Best of luck, the flames organization has failed you time and time again.

The Flames aren't getting Paajarvi, if Tambellini lets that happen he better be fired. Any one can pick 1st three times, Paajarvi is part of the core going forward. Its one of Hemsky or Whitney, Jones, or a lesser forward that Edmonton will trade.

Bang on, the Flames owe Iginla an organizational apology. He's scored over 500 goals, 9 time 30 goal scorer, 2 time 50 goal scorer, 1,095 points all without a true #1 center.

They failed to build around him properly. Same as with Sundin, they put Sundin with wingers like Jonas Hoglund.

Lol are you seriously saying pajaarvi is untouchable? He's a bloody joke 3rd line stop gap. The only reason he won't be traded is because there is no market for him. I'm sure all 8 of those points have teams lining up around the block. Seriously I bet he could pass through waivers...

Nothing yet from what I can see. He has to go soon though. You can't do this and have him come back tomorrow for practice. Imagine what his team mates are thinking/feeling. Probably pretty emotional for tanguay et al.

I hope Iggy gets a standing ovation even if he's not there.

Iggy being dealt is the first of many dominoes to fall. Chances are greater now that more of the vets will soon be gone.

I agree, I have to imagine that Bouwmeester will want out soon as well, if though trade doesn't matter to him probably, but he knows that next year won't bode well and he know holds the record I think for most games without playoffs, pretty sure he wants that to end.

Well Craig Button clearly feels that if that's the deal its a poor one for Calgary... Comparing to the Morrow to Pitt deal. Joe Morrow more upside than Khochlachev so....I'm hoping there is a second pick in there somewhere. Maybe a 2nd this year or a conditional first next year to go with the 1st this year.
