FGD: Colorado Visits Again - UPDATE Iginla scratched

Ryan Pike
March 27 2013 02:25PM

Two of the NHL's lowest-ranked teams clash tonight in the Scotiabank Saddledome with both of their playoff chances rapidly fading from sight. The Calgary Flames (12-15-4, 4.1% playoff chance) host the Colorado Avalanche (11-6-4, 0.8% playoff chance) at 8pm on TSN and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

The Flames are coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss last night in Chicago and are an uneven 3-7-0 in their last ten, but they're riding a seven-game winning streak at home. The Avs have been idle since a 3-2 loss to Vancouver on Sunday, but are equally poor (3-7-0) lately and boast one of the NHL's worst road records at 2-10-3. They're the only NHL club worse than Calgary on the road.

With two teams playing mostly for pride now, it'll be very interesting to see how this one plays out – particularly with the Avs playing for Seth Jones now and the Flames trying to keep their faint mathematical playoff hopes alive. Colorado has won the first two meetings between the teams this season by scores of 6-3 and 5-4.

THE LINE-UP

The Flames got absolutely slammed with shots against Chicago, getting out-gunned 35-16 and being on their heels the entire time. But that was a road game, and the Flames seem to have a strange confidence about them in home games. Things just seem to go well.

Given that it's the back-end of a back-to-back, the Flames didn't have a full morning skate (it was an optional) and line combinations are now guess-work. Here's how they lined up at the end of their game against Chicago:

  • Glencross-Backlund-Iginla
  • Tanguay-Cervenka-Cammalleri
  • Hudler-Stajan-Stempniak
  • Comeau-Begin-Jackman

  • Brodie – Bouwmeester
  • Giordano – Wideman
  • Butler – Sarich

  • Kiprusoff

As per Pat Steinberg's Twitter (and the Flames), Miikka Kiprusoff will sit after being shelled with shots over his last two games. Joey MacDonald will suit up in his stead. Also, expect some line-up changes given the back-to-back. I'd wager that Brian McGrattan and Derek Smith will sneak back into the line-up, but that's just me guessing.

THE OPPOSITION

Like the Flames, the Avalanche are coming off of a loss that was worse than the score reflected – a 3-2 setback on Sunday against the Canucks. Colorado also lost two key parts of their line-up to injury – forward Paul Statsny and defender Ryan Wilson.

Here's their lines as of the end of the Vancouver game:

  • McGinn-Duchene-Parenteau
  • Olver-O'Reilly-Landeskog
  • McLeod-Mitchell-Hejduk
  • Bordeleau-Stastny-Kobasew

  • Zanon-Hejda
  • Johnson-Hunwick
  • O'Brien-Wilson

  • Giguere

I'd expect Semyon Varlamov to start, Tyson Barrie to replace the injured Wilson and either David Jones or Aaron Palushaj to replace Statsny. The Avs remain a fairly talented team that has really, really underachieved this year. They've also had to deal with some injuries and absences, but thankfully (for them) Ryan O'Reilly is back and getting his legs under him with three goals and 11 points in 12 games (yay).

SUM IT UP

It's beyond crunch time. Wins are needed to stay alive. The Flames will have to play a smart game to play a rested Colorado team, particularly coming off a very disappointing performance against Chicago. Of course, on the

Only three games remain until the trade deadline.

UPDATE - Jarome Iginla won't play tonight. That means he will likely be moved within the next 24 hours.

He's been the best #2 in the last 3 yeas. It also shows you how good Bouwmeester is. He even made Butler look good.

That couldn't be more true as well, just how good is Bouwmeester if he can make Butler look as good as he did, is he making Brodie look as good as Brodie is looking? If so, Bouwmeester is far from Overpaid.

Wow, is Feaster actually still alive? Funny how he has fallen off the face of the Earth since the ROR debacle...it may just be his doppelgänger at the Dome.

But even Bouwmeester won't be able to make Bartkowski look good. I guess looking positively, if we do get Bartkowski we'll stop complaining about Butler.

I've always thought Bo got a bit of a bad rap. I think it's just his laid back personality. Makes him look like he doesn't care. His lack of numbers made his salary look outrageous. Like so many other great defencemen you don't see all the little things they do RIGHT.

Bob M. just said during the 1st intermission that the Boston deal is still not complete and that there are a lot of moving parts and complications and possibly a 3rd team involved with the Iginla deal being finalized. McKenzie and Dreger have said that the other teams involved are waiting to see if Bouwmeester may be another part of a 3 team deal with Iggy as they said that Bouwmeester will net a better return that Iggy.

Well they're certainly right about JBOuw. Now that the pucks are going in, he seems a helluva lot more attractive for teams to chase. His defensive play is still outstanding, his skating still exceptional, but the fact that he's rushing the puck up ice and has become a factor offensively again has certainly helped his stock.

Would Iginla and Whitney to Boston with something from the Oilers and Bruins going to the Flames and Bouwmeester going to the Oilers be plausible?

Three-way trades are so much harder to predict and make sense of.

I think he would have been involved in the advance scouting, but I believe he had recused himself from the draft in 2011 because he had joined the Flames by then.

This is all from an admittedly foggy memory, so don't take it as concrete.

...and RP gets it right.

Also I thought Tanguay signed in Calgary to play with Iggy... maybe he gets traded as well?

Interesting point to consider, though. Cammalleri has presumably waived his NTC to go to Calgary, does that not negate his NTC for the remainder of that contract?

If so that would make him a far more marketable asset.

Brodie looks good in general this year, but he's being beaten wide altogether too often, especially for a guy as mobile as him. That's the one major thing he needs to improve going forward.

Khokhlachev's listed at 5'10" 172. A team with no grit may get smaller.

I guess with a first rounder and a possible (possible) 5/6 d-man, if that's all you get for Iginla, well... That's all you get.

I'd have prefered Vey/Forbort/pick (or Kyle Clifford) over the probable package with the Bruins. But the Kings weren't in play at all, me thinks.

Perhaps Bouwmeester to L.A. for the same package? One can dream... One has to, as a Flames fan.

Would you say that is a case of misreading the play, poor gap control, or trying to play outside his comfort zone?

I think it's just adjusting to size and speed of players at this level. Doesn't respect it enough, is overwhelmed in the split second it takes to be beaten. Getting moved up to the first pairing has obviously exacerbated it.

I had mentioned the Penner trade package as a good template (1st, conditional depth, and a prospect/player) for Iginla.

Admittedly, these last few days I began to wonder if Boston or Chicago would go higher, but perhaps that trade package is a reasonable level of expectation.

To my mind, that is actually good news. It means that time and experience should correct for that. He looks to me like a potential 2nd pairing, best matched with a veteran shut-down partner who can calm things down.

Why does it seem like everyone hates this deal? I think this is a pretty fair price for Iginla, that being said i do not know very much about the prospects coming back but the 1st round pick in the deep draft is very nice(even if it is late because we do not have a 2nd round) would like to hear what everyone thinks we should have got from Boston, Caron?( I know the deal is not done yet )

He's listed at 5'10" 172 lbs. Probably more accurate to list him at 5'9", 165. Or less.

He may make it to 5'11', 180 lbs. Maybe.

I wish we could have found some size. Some grit. With some speed. And a scoring touch.

Again, one must dream these days.

My hope is the press conference is the dismissal of both Hartley and Feaster. Again, another dream.

Rex - perhaps this is the best they can get for Iggy. I think that's what your trying to tell me. And you may be correct.

(I still think we could have got more for Regher, with a different GM. Simply not a Feaster fan)
