FGD: Life Without Iggy Begins

The Calgary Flames are coming off a white-knuckled 4-3 win over the lowly Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night and they continue their trek to the trade deadline with a meeting tonight with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Game time is 7pm on Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

The Flames (13-15-4) are recovering from a tumultuous 48 hours, one which saw their captain depart for Pennsylvania and the team pick up a big divisional win, part of their effort to try to salvage some positives from this up-and-down season. The Jackets (13-14-7) have been excellent lately, boasting a 5-2-3 record over their last ten games, but are fresh from a road loss last night in Edmonton. The Jackets have an awful, awful road record, while the Flames have won eight in a row on Saddledome ice.

Can the Flames start the post-Iginla era with a win and stretch out their impressive home winning streak? Can they continue to feast upon teams playing their second of back-to-back road games? Or will they struggle against the Jackets once again?

THE LINE-UP

Forgotten in the last few days of craziness is the fact that the Flames have found ways to win at home. The team has won eight straight at the Dome, even when playing back-to-back games, or playing good teams, or starting their back-up goalie, or missing their franchise player (etc.).

I would expect Calgary to dress a similar line-up as in Wednesday's game, albeit with some minor tweaks. Here's how the lines finished off against Colorado:

  • Glencross-Stajan-Stempniak
  • Comeau-Cammalleri-Tanguay
  • Cervenka-Backlund-Hudler
  • McGrattan-Begin-Jackman

  • Brodie-Bouwmeester
  • Giordano-Wideman
  • Butler-Sarich

  • MacDonald

I would probably expect to see Miikka Kiprusoff in net, and perhaps Derek Smith to rotate back into the line-up on the blueline. Alex Tanguay didn't skate on Thursday and briefly left Wednesday's game before returning. My guess is he'll play.

With Iginla gone forever and ever (or until he returns), the Flames are down to 12 forwards, so I would expect them to summon a body from Abbotsford in the near futrure. The Heat play in Hamilton tonight and Toronto on Saturday, so if somebody's coming, they'll either come immediately or after the weekend.

THE OPPOSITION

Despite the fact that the Blue Jackets have historically been just awful, the Flames have nevertheless struggled against them. Last season the Calgary went 1-2-1 against the Jackets and they've split their pair of games this year, although Columbus has managed to get points in every single game over that span.

The upside for Calgary is that Columbus played last night in Edmonton – and lost by a score of 6-4. There's a chance that instead of facing goalie extraordinaire Sergei Bobrovsky, they may get back-up sieve extraordinaire Steve Mason.

Here's how the lines looked for the Jackets last night, when they scratched Nick Foligno due to injury and rolled with seven defensemen, including pariah Tim Erixon.

  • Brassard-Letestu-Prospal
  • Calvert-Anisimov-Atkinson
  • Umberger-Johansen-Collins
  • rotating-MacKenzie-Boll

  • Wisniewski-Tyutin
  • Nikitin-Prout
  • Johnson-Aucoin

  • Erixon
  • Mason

I wouldn't expect Foligno back tonight, but maybe Colton Gillies or John Moore could jump in on the fourth line in lieu of Erixon. Then again, with Jarome Iginla gone forever (or until he returns), Flames fans could bond in their hatred of Erixon.

SUM IT UP

Columbus played last night and lost, while the Flames are 7-2-1 playing a team that played the night before. Better yet, the Flames rebounded from a one-sided game in Chicago by beating Colorado – albeit a Colorado team that's dreaming of Seth Jones right now.

The Jarome Iginla era is over. Whatever the next era will end up being, it begins tonight, rather inauspiciously, with a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

I expect the Flames will not call Baertschi up this year, in order to push his RFA status out another year. Any bets on who will be the next call up from Abby? Horak maybe?

The very worst possible thing to happen now is for the Flames to feel like they have something to prove and actually put in a strong effort...don't fight it boys and go quietly into the night.

No winnin for Mackinnon.

Looks like the Red Wings have signed Keyser Soze. The market for JBo is going to start drying up soon, so they had better pull off a half-cocked, wild-eyed trade for bullcrap before they get nothing when he bails as UFA.

...

I will be at tonight's game, even after swearing off hockey. Free tickets, what can I say.

Flounder-in for Drou-in? Fail for Nail? Feaster is just going to trade us out of the top 3 and take future considerations on Mark Jankowski's children.

PHI reporting Coburn out indefinitely with a separated shoulder. You think this presses them to come after Jbo?

who should be on the roster after the trade deadline? I mean, which current players should be on the opening day roster to start next year? I think:

Tanguay, Backlund, Glencross, Stajan, Stempniak, Jackman Brodie, Giordano Kipper

Even though Wideman and Hudler are controllable for a few years they should go (they're part of the old plan).

With Iggy gone, the first overall picks for 2014, 2015, 2016 should be the goal (Ekblad, McDavid, Day).

If the stars align we can have our own version of Crosby-Malkin plus another!!!!

Set up for the transcendental talent.

Yes, I am being sarcastic.

Good to see Columbus put together a little winning streak.JD has obviously made an impression on the troops, and will make something out of this franchise.

John Davidson is one of those guys that,s been a leader from a young age.I was a year behind him in high school, and was aware,as was everyone else, that he would reach great success in his life.He had already made that statement at the age of 16.He was also humble , likeable and approachable.

Brett the Hitman Hart was a year behind me at the same time and also shared those qualities.Brett and i were speed reading partners.

That was a helluva pass by J-Bo, too bad Stajan was completely surprised by it. In the slot. On an offensive rush.

Through 2 periods Baertschi has 2 points, one goal and one assist as the Heat are up 4-2 against Hamilton. Keep Baertschi in the AHL then when he is ready bring him up and hopefully he will pay big dividends like Kadri is now.

So weird watching tonight! So not interested! All I'm wanting these days is trades. No face on this team now that's for sure. Gonna be a long haul. What's the latest on trade rumors? I follow on the net online but here in Utah there's no news. Hope jay Bo goes soon, followed by cammi. Tanguays got us stuck with a stupid contract!

So there's really no point in cheering for a loss now because Pitt wins the cup and were 30th pick anyways and the wheels are in motion anyways for rebuild. Before, it was all about forcing the hand of ownership and that's been done....so go flames go! And suck it erixon

Some fans might put up with years of being bad or tanking, I for one am not a fan of that model. I look at Ottawa, Philly, and Montreal as better examples. Those teams had a down season or two before being able to turn things around. Tanking for a lot of years is really bad out in the hopes things will turn around magically with talented kids. The Oiler kids were flat until their captain Horcoff came back from injury and showed them hard work and determination are major factors and not just skill alone.

I totally agree btw, Lebowski's strategy would make for some boring hockey; going to games should still be fun, blowouts are not fun.

Kipper is a pylon. Honestly, we'd do better tying a shooter tutor to the pipes and letting some of the shots hit it. Why would any team give up anything for him?

Regardless of what Kipper says, if the Flames really want to trade him they will. It might be before next week, at the draft or in the offseason. Nabokov and Visnovsky both refused to report to the Isles but eventually did. Kipper may change his tune, how could such a proud guy just go retire? I know he also wants to win a Cup badly.

Because he's far better than either goalie than the Leafs have. Yeah, I know it's been a bad season for him.

No he isn't. Reimer has a .916 save percentage and Scrivens is at .918. Kipper is below .870 now. He'd be below average in the AHL presently.
