GSB 41.0: BOA

It's that time again Calgary. You managed to get ahead of the Mighty Oil by a measly two goals last Battle of Alberta. Fortunately the good guys dug deep and managed to pump eight straight past your goaltending duo. Eight. Straight. Goals.

Let the soundtrack be the sequel to Gangham Style which dropped today. We have a few things to say.

YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG

Perhaps someone can explain why the Flames have won two of your last three games since selling off everything of value in the Saddledome including the scoreboard. Do the remaining "NHL calibre players" not understand what needs to happen from here on out? You need to l-o-s-e. Every game. Not squeak out shootout victories in Phoenix and celebrate like you are a few good powerplays away from being back on top.

You're so bad down in Calgary that you are bad at being bad. Let that sink in. Up here we are great at being bad. Hell the Oilers are the Lebron Jameseses of being bad - we understand exactly what it takes. A burning desire to see your squad crater into the league basement at 800 km/h, the ability to mail it in on any given night. You have to want it for heaven's sakes.

Fortunately the Oil will show you how to spectacularly implode as they look to pump another 8 past you tonight. Think of it as helping kick off your 6 year rebuild.

FIRST GAME FOR @17SAMB

Speaking of people who are doing it wrong the residents of the venerable Wanye Manor here in Edmonton have elected to scalp tickets for tonight and take Edmonton's newest permanent resident - former Morningside Panther Sam Brown - to his first Oilers game.

This guy is one hell of an Oiler fan already mind you - he knows the team from tip to toe and has been streaming games from Australia all year. He knows that Tambo is an indecisive wreck riddled with crippling second guessing and is more interested in solving the Caramilk Mystery than he is figuring out how to take the Oilers to the next level.

But we still have blind faith in the Oilers up here. Yes they may have cooled off after being red hot and yes it's not looking good for the Mighty Oil to streak into the post season. But you gotta keep the faith that selling most of the furniture in the Manor and going to a Saturday Night Battle of Alberta will result in victorious mayhem.

You think the Oil are going to let down Sam Brown at his first Oilers game?

Please. Chalk this up as a win right now.

LINES: OILERS

According to the Oilers official twitter feed there will be no changes in the Oilers lineup from last game

F

Hall-RNH-Eberle

Paajarvi-Gagner-Yakupov

Jones-Horcoff-Petrell

Smyth-Smithson-Brown

D

Smid/Petry

N.Schultz/J.Schultz

Whitney/Fistric

Khabibulin gets the start in net.

LINES: FLAMES

The Flames lineup is hard to determine tonight. Their official site has no mention of how things are shaping up, nor does their twitter feed. The ever helpful folks over at Coppernblue have published the lineup below which is quite a different squadron than suggested in the Edmonton Sun today. It's almost as though the Flames themselves are running a smoke screen to mask how far the franchise has fallen.

Anyways, the "lines" are as follows:

F

Horak - Cammalleri - Baertschi

Glencross- Backlund - Stempniak

Hanowski - Reinhart - Jones

Jackman - Cervenka - McGrattan

D

Giordano/Wideman

Brodie/Sarich

Butler/Carson

Joey MacDonald gets the start tonight until he is inevitably pulled.

Note: Rumour has it that Glencross is out too with some sort of mystery illness - most likely being sick of being a Flame. If this happens chuck another crumb you have never heard of onto a line randomly.

Note 2: In addition to having one of the worst lineups in the NHL, the Flames have to be near the top for the hardest lineup to spell. Who the hell are any of these players? What the hell is a Ben Hanowski?

PREDICTIONS

GAME DAY PREDICTION: Oilers win 5-2 on goals from Hall, Eberle (2), J. Schultz and Yakupov. Scoring for Calgary "who cares" and "some guy you quasi know"

OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: The Oilers remember that they might be on the outside looking in this year but the Flames are on the outside of the outside looking in. They shell them into oblivion.

NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: After lumbering into his perch in the press box Flames GM Jay Feaster will scan the lineup for tonight's match. "Jeez the Flames don't look very good on paper do they?" After it's brought to his attention that it is in fact his job to fix the lineup he will dimly shrug his shoulders and say "nothing that can't keep till the summer am I right? Now where's that free popcorn I heard about up here?"

From across the press box Steve Tambellini smiles knowingly and gives him the thumbs up.

So far I hate to admit that the oil are being out hustled by the worst team in the NHL. The oil are gutless quitters and at least 15 of them have no place in this league. They are a complete embarrassment to the franchise, to their families and to the game of pro hockey. Other than that, the rebuild is right on schedule or so I am told.

LMAO! Do the OIlers and Flames play again, cause if this score holds, can't wait to read the GD!

Also, LOL at having all these first overalls, and all the other high firsts and then Justin Schultz to top it all off and losing to what amounts to a good AHL team at this point.

We need to lay some weight on their little guys and we need to take it to the net, our d-men need to get on their horses and look to sprink every time.

We cannot try to work our way out of this in a conventional manner.

Switch the positions of our first two lines and greenlight the entire team, its time to make some proactive changes, maybe double shift Halls speed a few times as well.

We need to activate our defense 100% right now not screw around, this one is a free for all, only we are to stupid to know it, open it up Ralph the season is over anyways what the hell point are you trying to make here??

We need to see the floodgates open and see the same energy we see when you pull the goddam goalie, what kind of a bench do you run, get these men moving, lets see some emotion. Its not exactly hard to make a few line changes and greenlight everyone to feed yakupov and Nuge and J Schultz, we are loseing the goddam game and not even trying to help our boys win the Calder Trophy, we lose everywhere for gos sakes.

Oh yes they can, what I said on the first page of this forum is ringing true. Bringing kids into a losing environment is very toxic, the Oiler kids have become accustom to losing. Once it becomes a norm, you accept it as a way of being. I am for a rebuild but not years of tanking and having our kids developed in a toxic culture.

I demand that Ralph switch all four lines completely opposite the 4th to the 1st and the 1st down to the 4th.

What the hell do we have to lose, lets see if its really Ralphs lines or if its the system, reverse all the lines and lets see what happens.

I mean seriously we need to at least swing to be in the fight, this is getting really really sad.

Where the Hell is Hall?

Gagner what the heck?

Put Petrells line in the first slot and lets see what they can do.

Kipper is not in net, the Flames are basically a AHL team tonight.

The Oilers are full of all their top end prospects and picks, the Halls and whatever and they are down 3-1.

This is the night every Oiler fan has got to lose their mind over the rebuild because they are looking at another 5 years out of the playoffs. The team is awful, the Flames are not even icing a legitimate NHL team at the moment.

Actually we lost our minds months ago, if you call us a legitimate NHL team you're kidding yourself. But don't forget we're not the ones that folded and Choked the last few seasons, you guys got pretty good at that as well.

This is unreal.

If there is a Panic button somewhere in Edmonton now, now is the time to hit it. Does anyone in Edmonton even understand how half staffed the Flames are right now.

WOW - if they can not come back and win this game against the Flames, I will confidently predict this team will not see the playoffs for the next 3 years min. That will be 10 Straight years out of the playoffs.

They have a problem between the ears - Loseritis.

The Oilers rebuild is going to fail on an epic scale, only a matter of time now before the star young players start demanding trades. I actually feel sorry for Oiler fans at this point.

They just don't understand that this is the time of year when you have to bring your best hockey and if the best the Oiler's have can not even beat the AHL Flames with Joey Mac in net. Sarich as a top 4 D and oh, do I need to even go on.

Wow - they can't even get their gloating in licks in this year as the Flames tank for the draft…

That new arena is perfectly shaped like a golf club and is perfect for the new generation of Oilers...

This is so weird as a Flames fan, you actually kind of want the Oilers to win for your draft odds but on the other hand it is kind of fun to watch your young Flame C level prospects beat the A - list Oilers young stars.

So conflicted… Why can't the Oilers at least be good enough to beat the farm team of the Flames so we can get a good pick.

Perhaps this all part of Tamblowe's master losing plan to prevent the Flames from getting a top pick and therefore securing their supremacy in the BOA at some distant time point in the future, maybe the next decade?

Keep the d-men rushing the puck, keep Smid shooting and lets see J Schultz taking wayy more chances.

This is our overtime right now so lets treat it that way because if they score the next one our coffin is nailed shut, forget the miracles, they need help and we are anemic offensively.

@Colin.S

I don't often agree with Don Cherry... But he was absolutely bang on as to why the Oilers cannot get it together.... The Oilers are the softest team in the league, even Vancouver pushes them around. Its ridiculous you thought you could make the playoffs this season after last years injuries withot ZERO increased size upfront!!!

Even as a Flames Fan I think Oilers fans deserve better then Steve Tambellini, who is absolutely petrified of moving a few young assets or picks in order to fill out your roster with some skilled size upfront. He is just letting Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson rott move him for a Ryan Clowe in the offseason. Any GM can just draft first overall, which is all he seems capable of doing.

ALSO WHY WAS RYAN JONES NOT IN THE LINEUP UNTIL TONIGHT??? He is the only remotely skilled energy guy you have.... Ralph Krueger has made some questionable decisions this year keeping guys out of the roster. They were asking way to much for Ryan Whitney!!! That can't help the dressing room keeping him around!!

I would suggest that the oil are already p lanning tee-times but Edmonton's tracks are weeks away from opening. Of course none of them live here, they are all counting the seconds until they can be free of the unreasonable expectations of oil fans, jetting off to exotic locales to spend the thick cash they make courtesy us fans.

How ridiculous of us, expecting these young hockey heros to give an honest effort nightly. I was critical of using the 1st overall on a Russian, thinking that he would be soft, a dressing room problem with a questionable work ethic. I was wrong. He is the only oiler with nuts. Is it time to build around him and dump the rest of the passengers for whatever you can get?

Has anyone noticed that the Oilers haven't won a game since Brown broke his nose and quit fighting. His last fight was against Calgary in the 8 - 2 game. It's obvious the Oilers are very scared team and play that way. Yet RK refuses to dress Peckham. The Oilers are always the nails and the other team are the hammers. We never dictate the physical part of any game and it's sick to watch.

Lets start the 3rd with the same energy we finished the 2nd with, lets keep the speed and energy going, keep taking it to the net, keep that first shot fast and hard and LOW, stop trying to pick corners shoot for the ELBOWS. We will get better rebounds suited to our positioning.

We are taking the game back you can feel it.

Just stay the course and keep the pedal down, dont be afraid to make changes and adjustments to the lines, feel free to play around a little , remember the pressure is off already, lets have some fun, feed Nail and Nuge and J Schultz as much as possible in the 3rd trust me we will score multiple goals if we focus on those 3 guys and just execute the syste, with those 3 guys darting in and out as floaters looking to cherry pick, just one floater at a time, but just feed them time after time.

Move the trigger on the PP closer in more on the half-boards for the one-timer, have two guys switch spots so the shooter can go as deep as he wants, have the passer sprint crossice to the middle blueline to slide over and cover for the guy on the point going to the half-wall for the onetimer.

The Flames are not getting fancy at all, so use the give and gos on them and remember to attack the puck carrier in our zone immediatly because they are loosey goosey and are all shooting at will and fast, they arent wasteing much time setting up so lets just go to the puck ASAP and pursue until we get it back, using the body more than the stick.

Maybe just get simple like they are and start the give and go earlier in the n-zone like usual and then just tic-tac-toe around them, we seem to be beating them one-on-one consistantly. if we just use the simple give and go and bring our d-men in right behind the playaction we might catch them a few times picking up loose pucks and driving them in.

If thats totally acurate than we would be - 10-30 as we would have lost 20 games before we traded for Brown, however its not only the physical play that we do not dictate, every aspect of the game we are reactionary to not proactive hence why we once again fail to make the playoffs. As for Peckham he showed up out of shape and has not been forgiven for his error(not the first time hes done this) tho I agree his presence would be a welcome sight.

Lets not get lulled out of the last ten minutes of this game.
