GSB 41.0: BOA

It's that time again Calgary. You managed to get ahead of the Mighty Oil by a measly two goals last Battle of Alberta. Fortunately the good guys dug deep and managed to pump eight straight past your goaltending duo. Eight. Straight. Goals.

Let the soundtrack be the sequel to Gangham Style which dropped today. We have a few things to say.

YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG

Perhaps someone can explain why the Flames have won two of your last three games since selling off everything of value in the Saddledome including the scoreboard. Do the remaining "NHL calibre players" not understand what needs to happen from here on out? You need to l-o-s-e. Every game. Not squeak out shootout victories in Phoenix and celebrate like you are a few good powerplays away from being back on top.

You're so bad down in Calgary that you are bad at being bad. Let that sink in. Up here we are great at being bad. Hell the Oilers are the Lebron Jameseses of being bad - we understand exactly what it takes. A burning desire to see your squad crater into the league basement at 800 km/h, the ability to mail it in on any given night. You have to want it for heaven's sakes.

Fortunately the Oil will show you how to spectacularly implode as they look to pump another 8 past you tonight. Think of it as helping kick off your 6 year rebuild.

FIRST GAME FOR @17SAMB

Speaking of people who are doing it wrong the residents of the venerable Wanye Manor here in Edmonton have elected to scalp tickets for tonight and take Edmonton's newest permanent resident - former Morningside Panther Sam Brown - to his first Oilers game.

This guy is one hell of an Oiler fan already mind you - he knows the team from tip to toe and has been streaming games from Australia all year. He knows that Tambo is an indecisive wreck riddled with crippling second guessing and is more interested in solving the Caramilk Mystery than he is figuring out how to take the Oilers to the next level.

But we still have blind faith in the Oilers up here. Yes they may have cooled off after being red hot and yes it's not looking good for the Mighty Oil to streak into the post season. But you gotta keep the faith that selling most of the furniture in the Manor and going to a Saturday Night Battle of Alberta will result in victorious mayhem.

You think the Oil are going to let down Sam Brown at his first Oilers game?

Please. Chalk this up as a win right now.

LINES: OILERS

According to the Oilers official twitter feed there will be no changes in the Oilers lineup from last game

F

Hall-RNH-Eberle

Paajarvi-Gagner-Yakupov

Jones-Horcoff-Petrell

Smyth-Smithson-Brown

D

Smid/Petry

N.Schultz/J.Schultz

Whitney/Fistric

Khabibulin gets the start in net.

LINES: FLAMES

The Flames lineup is hard to determine tonight. Their official site has no mention of how things are shaping up, nor does their twitter feed. The ever helpful folks over at Coppernblue have published the lineup below which is quite a different squadron than suggested in the Edmonton Sun today. It's almost as though the Flames themselves are running a smoke screen to mask how far the franchise has fallen.

Anyways, the "lines" are as follows:

F

Horak - Cammalleri - Baertschi

Glencross- Backlund - Stempniak

Hanowski - Reinhart - Jones

Jackman - Cervenka - McGrattan

D

Giordano/Wideman

Brodie/Sarich

Butler/Carson

Joey MacDonald gets the start tonight until he is inevitably pulled.

Note: Rumour has it that Glencross is out too with some sort of mystery illness - most likely being sick of being a Flame. If this happens chuck another crumb you have never heard of onto a line randomly.

Note 2: In addition to having one of the worst lineups in the NHL, the Flames have to be near the top for the hardest lineup to spell. Who the hell are any of these players? What the hell is a Ben Hanowski?

PREDICTIONS

GAME DAY PREDICTION: Oilers win 5-2 on goals from Hall, Eberle (2), J. Schultz and Yakupov. Scoring for Calgary "who cares" and "some guy you quasi know"

OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: The Oilers remember that they might be on the outside looking in this year but the Flames are on the outside of the outside looking in. They shell them into oblivion.

NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: After lumbering into his perch in the press box Flames GM Jay Feaster will scan the lineup for tonight's match. "Jeez the Flames don't look very good on paper do they?" After it's brought to his attention that it is in fact his job to fix the lineup he will dimly shrug his shoulders and say "nothing that can't keep till the summer am I right? Now where's that free popcorn I heard about up here?"

From across the press box Steve Tambellini smiles knowingly and gives him the thumbs up.

What could be more of a sure thing... relying on US college players and tiny Euros to turn a franchise around.

My prediction is that FINALLY the oil have a team they can push around; 6-2 oil and little Sven gets snot-bubbled.

Flames rolling with Cammalleri-Horak-Aliu as their opening line. Team'll be hurting from missing Glencross; his line with Reinhart and Stempniak was dynamite last game against Phoenix.

Just reporting the numbers chief. Speaking of small foreigners, Yak is 5'11, 184. Hanowski is 22 yrs old 6'2, 210, if college players can speed up the rebuild process (remember where Schultz came from?), then I'm all for it.

We likely won't win tonight, nor should we with Macbackup and the AHL kids playing but we'll see how the oiler kids respond now that the playoffs are out of the picture. It's not the best sign when the playoffs are within reach and your players lose four straight.

It looks like the Flames have already started their off season routines, they all look winded and beaten already, they must be staying up late and letting themselves go, they are just heaving on the bench already, keep the pedal down and do what you are doing .

Lets break them as early as we can, just keep dishing to yakupov and Nuge and lets see J Schultz bringing it to the net and letting that wrister go as he slides across the middle laterally.

Take er to the net when you dont have the puck and let your teammates rifle shots right away with no heistation, just let er go, its all or nothing tonight so lets try to turn this into a track meet.

Acceptable penalty.

Lets remember to keep the pressure on them , lets go for a shorthanded goal, just open it up river style.

Lets remind the men that we need to take the decision out of the refs hands so we dont get into our own beanbags and complicate the game, we need to put the pedal back down and hammer their young small guys extra hard, and run their tender as we have been, MPS needs to take it right to the net tonight Abdelcator style, long and wide and fast and then back in to tuck the puck in.

The 1st line needs to tell the puck carrier to cut to an open lane sooner after the pass, we are making nice first passes but our shot opportunitys suck, we need to have the passer go to better spots and NOT behind the net, more to the backdoor looking for deflections, the zone entrys the 1st line are making work are perfect for deflections and little scoop-shot onetimers on the fly, quick release.

Get the feet moving and no more stick fouls, that is not acceptable, we need to take it to them on the PK be more aggressive on the puck carrier and maintain puck pursuit longer than we are. We need to make it clear to them that we are not backing down and this will be a track meet for 2 more periods.

Again we need to take the results out of the refs hands and the only way to do that is to score so lets get on it.

We need to release the puck sooner after the first pass once we are in their wheelhouse and we need to have the men without the puck go to open spots way faster and with more determination.

Lets use some wraparounds, and remember to think deflections because when we do gain the o-zone the 1st line is boxing out the d-man very well, so lets see the same play that both yakupov and Gagner used where they had superior body position and shoveled the puck to the net, that is a nice tactic but lets do the same thing three feet further out, not so close in, same play but just three feet further out.

when the 1st line makes their o-zone entrys they are forcng the d-men to collapse early, so we need to remember to think about the d-man on the point and remember we can hit him for a one timer all night long as soon as they collapse from the pressure to the middle.Believe it or not Smid is the man for this shot.

But we need to remember that the middle pressure is the RIGHT thing to do, we just need a trailer coming in behind to pick off rebounds because they are consistantly trickeling out to the front, this is good now we need to keep doing what we were doing but send in a trailer for those juicy rebounds, we are boxing the d-men out well man for man in front but this means the rebounds are leaking through really slow and sitting there waiting for a d-man to dash in and bury them in the net.

We also need to start throwing some serious hits, all across the lineup we need to hit the Flames all night long to send a message that we arent going to be a just river hockey team, lets feed them some BadMedicine ASAP.

@Colin.S

to me it seems kind of counter-intuitive that more hits would mean a better team. I'd actually think that if you had the puck all the time, you wouldn't need to be hitting all the time. Given whats coming out with zone starts as well, if you're carrying the puck in vs. dumping it in, you also shouldn't be hitting as much.
