Post-Game: Better Than Last and Weekend Open Thread

Folks, the Calgary Flames home schedule is over. They defeated the Anaheim Ducks by a 3-1 score on Friday night in their 24th (and final) home date of the truncated 2013 season.

They finish their home schedule with a record of 13-9-2 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. If their road record wasn't so horrible this year (5-13-2), maybe they would've made some noise. Nevertheless, they came into their last home contest and played a smart, energetic game.

In perhaps Miikka Kiprusoff's final appearance on Saddledome ice, he made 32 saves for the win. It's an inconvenient time for him to rebound, but it's good to see Kipper go out with a victory.

The team in front of him also deserved full marks. Curtis Glencross took a knee-on-knee hit from Ben Lovejoy. Mikael Backlund fought Lovejoy in response. The Flames went without either of them for the balance of the second and still carried the play.

Roman Horak, Brian McGrattan and Roman Cervenka (empty net) scored for the Flames, who move to 18-22-4 on the year and sit sixth-from-last in the NHL. More importantly, they cannot finish 30th due to having more points than Florida can achieve, if you include tie-breakers.

The 2013 season has been a disappointment for the Calgary Flames. But, at the very least, they cannot finish dead-last.

And there's always the chance that they win the draft lottery. And maybe finish ahead of Edmonton as well, which almost make this whole season worthwhile.

On Another Note...

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Tilted Kilt last night or at least played the CSDG at home or elsewhere. Good times were had by all who attened I'm told.

Gotta love Backlund sticking up for his teammate there. Even though the kid has no clue how to fight, pretty admirable move by the young guy. He's really growing in skill AND leadership.

I agree. It's interesting to think that at 24, Backs is going to be veteran, and a key leader for this team moving forward. It was great to see him stand up last night and play with heart.

The Flames next 4 games are against the Wild, Preds, Blues, and Blackhawks.

They'll probably only win 1 of those games, so there is some hope still left that the Flames could get in the top 4-5.

What they really need is for teams like Tampa, Carolina, and Nashville to get on a hot streak.

Those teams remaining games are:

CAROLINA --> vs Philly (who are just 1 pt up on CGY), @ Tampa (please be a 3 point game), vs NYI, vs NYR, and @ Pittsburgh to finish off their year.

I see the Canes winning 2 of those games, maybe 3.

Tampa Bay--> vs Carolina, vs TOR, at BOS, vs FLA.

Maybe 2 wins in those games

Nashville --> vs CGY (go NSH!), at DET, and at CLB to finish the year off.

Potentially 0 wins, maybe squeak one out, hopefully against CGY.

I still think the Flames will be in the top 5 (or bottom 5 if you prefer) at the end of the year. But any dreams of Mackinnon are out the window unless CGY wins the draft lottery.

Had a great time at the Kilt last night for the first official CSDG. There are a lot of really cool people attached to FN, very approachable and friendly. Hope to see a bigger crowd at the next one.

In other news, Glencross is currently (and, I guess, for the rest of the season) on pace for 30+ goals and 50+ points in a full season. Just to bring something up for no reason.

Backlund along with Horak played exceptional last night. I thought if it wasn't for strong goaltending from Hiller Calgary would have had a few more goals.

When Backlund was injured earlier in the season I was one who thought he should have been traded due to his prowness to injuries. Boy was I wrong. Each game like TJ Brodie, Backlund is really stepping up and making this team better and providing great character and leadership on the ice.

THe signing of Macdonald was well deserved. I think he provides a measure of insurance in the net. Going into next season the goalie situation will be quiete interesting.

Hopefully, this week the team continues to play competitive, but stay in the top 4 to 7 range.

@Mangotanker

Oh, the biggest game of the year for the Flames this season is against Nashville!!! If they lose that I doubt we beat Minnesota, St. Louis and Chicago. If we stay at 40 points we have an outside shot at third!!! But I think we have four locked up then considering Nashville will be at 41 points and Tampa has to beat Carolina they also play Florida.... Please oh please don't start winning on the road!! If we can finish fourth that is still Barkov worst case scenario, if either Colorado or Carolina takes a flyer on Nichushkin or Nurse you never know. We might have an outside shot at Drouin... After Carolina signed Semin to a long term maybe they take a fellow Russian countryman and Colorado needs defence over forwards, I know its unlikely but you never know.

Also please let the Draft lottery benefit us, with our luck a team behind us wins it and pushes us further out. Anyway I know we aren't winning any lottery the Hockey Gods aren't that kind to us.

Oh I just looked at the Mooseheads game tonight MacKinnon had four points and Drouin had FIVE points, we aren't getting either of them at four. Hahah. Sucks to be a Flames fan, at least some positives can be taken away from the last couple games with our rookies stepping up. Now stop winning. Carolina needs to beat Tampa in over time and get another points somewhere. Tampa needs to beat Florida and we cannot win a thing if we ever want Drouin or MacKinnon at Third.
