FGD: Tank Baby Tank

This could be a very peculiar game tonight. The 12th place Flames take on the 14th place Predators and both clubs will be earnestly trying to lose to secure a favorable draft position.

So, in stark contrast to your average game, this will be an entirely different contest of wills: who can out-suck whom? Who can take more penalties, give up the puck at the blueline more often and dress more replacement level bodies? I'd feel sorry for any folks paying money to see the pending debacle tonight, but it might be morbidly interesting as a sort of rare, grotesque spectacle.

As discussed at length recently, Calgary's ill-timed goalie regression and subsequent winning streak has crippled their chances of finishing inside the top-5, so there really is an urgent need to score a few own goals over the next few games. That would have been easier against another non-tanker, but Nashville is in the same boat and even closer to the brass ring with 38 points. They can practically start penciling in at least one of the big names onto their prospect list right now.

As such, no one should be surprised if goons start skating on top lines, if whatever remaining vets there are suddenly need to "leave the game" for mysterious maladies and, in the end, if defenders accidentally start rifling the puck into their own net as time winds down.

It's the sporting equivalent of The Producers.

The Lineup

I wouldn't have bothered with this otherwise, but Calgary's roster tonight is, uh, noteworthy:

  • Baertschi - Reinhart - Cervenka
  • Hudler - Horak - Aliu
  • Bancks - Byron - McGrattan (!)
  • Hanowski - Street - Jones

  • Brodie - Cundari
  • Giordano - Wideman
  • Butler - Babchuk

  • Kipper

Carter Bancks makes his NHL debut. As laughable as this situation may seem to be, he's one guy who probably doesn't find it funny. Bancks isn't really an NHL level talent, but by all accounts he's a tireless worker and excellent teammate, so it's nice to see him get a cup of coffee - even if it's in service of less than honorable ends.

Babchuk's re-appearance in the line-up is self explanatory.

The Opponent

  • Kostitsyn - Spaling - Bang
  • Mueller - Henderson - Butler
  • Fisher - Forsberg - Legwand
  • Clune - Smith - Halischuk

  • Weber - Josi
  • Klein - Bartley
  • Blum - Gill

  • Rinne

In case you thought this would be a slam dunk (loss) for the Flames, take a look at what the Preds will probably be icing. There's a few more recognizable names in that line-up, but not many. Although Mr. Bang should get a few points simply for having one of the most hockey-ish last names ever.

Sum it Up

What happens when both boxers have been paid to throw the fight? Tonight we'll find out.

Okay... Mad props to Feaster and Hartley for going into balls-to-the-wall uber-tank-mode.

Predators:

Total man-games played by tonight's roster: 525
Man-games/Player: 27.6
Average portion of the season played: 61.4%

That's tank-mode. Now check this out:

Flames:

Total man-games played by tonight's roster: 343
Man-games/Player: 18.1
Average portion of the season played: 40.1%

Now that's uber-tank-mode.

3 point game, 3 point game.....go Preds!

The Flames should bring Shawn Horcoff to Calgary if you want to do this tanking right. Never will your first line center do so little.

Remember when the Senators were dressing guys like Darrin Madeley and Doug Smail in an attempt to draft first overall and the Hockey Gods smacked them upside the head for that with Daigle and Yashin.

Credit to the Flames for giving it the old college try here, but I have to wonder if the kids don't come in and surprise. The problem with young stallions is sometimes they don't know that they are beaten.

i've been fairly impressed with cundari. He's small but he doesn't really play it. He's able to muscle guys off the puck pretty well

Phew, that was close, we(those of us @ the N end of the QE2) needed this one. Only way Preds could catch us is with a W in this one. Thanks again.

This team is still jekyll and hyde! When we expect them to lose to Minny they win 4-1 despite getting outshot and outchanced. Maybe they'll lose tonight because everyone is predicting a win over the Preds. At least we get to see the NHL debut of Carter Bancks. I was suprised to see so many of the kids score in their debut, Maxwell Reinhart, Ben Hanowski, Mark Cundari. I wonder if that is some kind of NHL record? Maybe Bancks can make it no. 4.

Reinhart didn't score in his debut...

Maybe I'm in the minority, but these games are a joke and it should be an embarrassment to the league.

Professional sports teams purposely trying to loose, in an effort to better themselves is an offense to all fans. Why would anyone want to pay to watch junk like this?

@ChinookArch

Agree, they should do something to fix this situation as it comes up each year. But for now, the league rewards those who suck hardest, so I'm behind the tanking in that it will (hopefully) benefit the team in a big way.

We should have kept Iginla around for 30th...he seemed to have a magical toxic effect on the team.

If Nashville loses this game this should be the most embarrassing point in each of their careers. Weber and Rinne alone should make this an easy win. I can't believe flames are winning 1-0

@Kent Wilson

I was thinking the flames really need a powerplay specialist. We could probably retain him in the 2-2.5million range as long as we give him a NTC...

In all seriousness though, it would be interesting to know what he's thinking. He basically hasn't played this year, barely played last year... He must have known he wasnt going to play much this year... why didn't they arrange for him to stay in europe?

Why all the hate for Cervenka? Don't you think it takes a little time to learn NHL defence? No training camp, blood-clot, never played in NA before... seems like a summer of training and some d lessons and he could be a jiri hudler.

Not everyone may agree, but I really like Cervenka, and I hope he decides to stay and we give him another year. No longer than that though. Also, none of this "pretend he's a centre" business.

@Lordmork

I think Cervenka could be useful, but in a limited role and playing with a centreman like Bergeron. Flames can afford neither so he's just not that valuable here. I wouldn't be too surprised if he got a small 2 way deal from another team next season though.

@Lordmork

who would you have him play with? I'm not sure there's room for him in the top 9, and he's not worth much on the 4th line.
