FGD: Singing the Blues

Justin Azevedo
April 25 2013 02:43PM

The second to last game of this mercifully short season for the Flames will be played tonight at the Scotttrade Centre in St. Louis (which, according to wi, is an awesome place to watch a hockey game).

The game itself is mostly meaningless aside from playoff positioning - but let's be real, here: Chicago, Los Angeles and Vancouver are all making it out of the first round. Unless St. Louis loses its way to the 7 seed, they're done in the first.

The Flames will take on Jay Bouwmeester and the St. Louis Blues, who clinched a playoff spot a couple of nights ago, leading to this reaction from Jbo:

It’s good, I guess.

 What a guy.

Line Up

  • Mike Cammalleri - Matt Stajan - Lee Stempniak
  • Sven Baertschi - Mikael Backlund - Jiri Hudler
  • Paul Byron - Roman Horak - Roman Cervenka
  • Max Reinhart - Blair Jones - Tim Jackman
  • Mark Giordano - Dennis Wideman
  • TJ Brodie - Mark Cundari
  • Chris Butler - Anton Babchuk
  • Joey MacDonald

Chris Butler will be playing for the US in the upcoming World Championships - which is hilarious because he is awful. This leads me to the conclusion the US team is awful, which can't be too far off since Butler is a member of it. Baertschi will be playing for the Swiss and Hudler will suit up for the Czechs.

MacDonald gets the start in net tonight, which is kinda sad because a. Kipper has one game left in his career and should be starting b. we're missing a glorious chance to see Leland Irving get lit up one last time for old time's sake.

Bancks, Hanowski, Aliu, Street and Carson will be in the press box tonight, which seems like the right call: none of these guys are NHLers and barring a major step forward will likely spend the rest of their career in the minors as tweeners.

The Enemy

  • Jaden Schwartz - David Backes - Alexander Steen
  • Andy McDonald - Vladimir Sobotka - Chris Stewart
  • David Perron - Patrik Berglund - Vladimir Tarasenko
  • Adam Cracknell - Chris Porter - Ryan Reaves
  • Jay Bouwmeester - Alex Pietrangelo
  • Jordan Leopold - Kevin Shattenkirk
  • Kris Russell - Roman Polak
  • Brian Elliott

Bouwmeester has a goal and 5 assists in 12 games since being traded to the Blues. He won't keep up that pace forever, but scoring like that while playing against the toughest the league has to offer (again) is impressive as hell.

TJ Oshie is done for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury. I always like watching Oshie play: there's not one thing he's amazing at, but he's very good at everything. Special player.

Brian Elliott has managed to salvage his season, as he's improved his EVSV% to above replacement level (.916). Both of the Blues' other goaltenders are at .911 EVSV%, so it's probably best to roll with Elliott for now. I don't think Elliott is the best of the three, but it's a lot closer than most people think.

Possible Playoff Clinchers

West: Minnesota (CBJ loss in regulation) and Detroit (getting one more point than CBJ does tonight).

East: Ottawa (getting one more point than WPG does tonight) and New York (getting one more point than WPG does tonight).

Draft Pick Watch

NJ, BUF, PHI, CAR, EDM, NSH, TB, COL and FLA are all in the draft pick hunt along with the Flames. The first 4 are ahead of the Flames and the last 5 are behind them. If the Flames lose in regulation tonight, the best they can finish is 24th.

Sum It Up

Watch the game, drink some beer, don't worry too much about the results. Game starts at 6 PM on SNET.

Go Flames.

WHERE'S IRVING?!?!?!?!? Get that kid in net.... we need what he brings. IE goals against.

I can tell you as a BC resident that Vancouver is terrified of St Louis and LA as first round match ups. They praying for SJ or Minnesota.... The Canucks do not match up well with the Blues...

I think if we lose these last two we can move down (or up depending on how you look at it) two spots at least. TB is playing hard and trying to get Marty an Art Ross, Edm should beat Van at home with the Nucks resting hopefully everyone and Nashville should get up for Det and/or Columbus knowing that they can effectively knock them out of the playoffs.

Why isn't Perron on the "top line" with backes? Or is the goal to roll 3 lines that can spank the flames equally effectively as opposed to throwing out 2 that can crush them?

San Jose and LA play their last game against each other. So one will end up with 59-points. But if San Jose wins that one and St Louis wins both it its games then it will be a St Louis/San Jose series with St Louis getting home ice advantage.

San Jose struggles on the road. I actually don't mind St Louis chances in that scenario. But ya, I like Chicago, Anaheim, LA, and Vancouver over St Louis. Even with the California teams being sorta blah over the stretch run.

As for the Flames. Big night. Nashville, Tampa, and Carolina are all playing tonight. Nashville and Carolina can overtake the Flames and Tampa can draw even in points.

That said, beating St Louis gives us a better spot with the St Louis pick so it stands as a decent consolation prize if we do squeak out a win.

Berglund as a 3rd line center.... the things I'd do to have a guy like him lining up on the 3'rd line!

Say what you will about the Blues, for a team not having any real forward super stars, they have a huge amount of equally great talent. All those lines are scoring threats on any given night and they SHOULD handle the Flames pretty easily tonight.

I just hope Sven can keep his scoring streak going! Would be nice to see him get another Goal aside from assists.

The Flames have really pumped some regular NHL'ers back into their lineup! The average Flame on this lineup has played 63.5% of a full season (up from 40.1% against the Preds)! Of course, the average Blue has played 82.0% of a season. Über-tank-mode disengaged, regular tank-mode engaged.

What's the deal with winning the draft lottery? If you win, you move up a max of 2 spots, right?

So if the Flames finish 24th, they get the 7th pick. If they win the lottery, they move up to 5th. Correct?

Also, of course the US team is terrible, Joe Sacco is coaching it.

Flames need to punish Bouwmeester. Cundari, Sarich, whoever, needs to hit him every single time he is on the ice. Show him how to do it properly.

While the top pick can now go to any of the 14 non-playoff clubs, or the team owning the rights to the first pick of a non-playoff club, the odds of winning the lottery are unchanged from previous years. The teams in the drawing are ranked in inverse order of their regular season point totals, with team one being the club with the fewest points, and team 14 being the club with the most points among those outside of the playoffs.

The likelihood of each team gaining the right to the first pick is as follows:

Team 1 25.0%

Team 2 18.8%

Team 3 14.2%

Team 4 10.7%

Team 5 8.1%

Team 6 6.2%

Team 7 4.7%

Team 8 3.6%

Team 9 2.7%

Team 10 2.1%

Team 11 1.5%

Team 12 1.1%

Team 13 0.8%

Team 14 0.5%

No club will move down more than one position as a result of the Draft Lottery. The remaining first round drafting positions are determined by the results of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Before this year you could only move up a max of 3 spots. However, this isn't the case anymore. ANYONE out of the playoffs technically has a chance at the first overall pick (but very very low percentage). Even at 7th overall right now, the flames are a mere 4 ish %.

But there is always a hope!

Previously, you could actually move up 4 spots if you won the lotto. Thus the top 5 were the only ones with potential to win the 1st overall pick.

Looks like both Oilers and Flames fans will be cheering for Carolina, Tampa Bay and Nashville tonight. United We Tank.

Also, prior to this year the draft lottery included all non-playoff teams based on percentages that suba steve reported above. The caveat was that the winning team moved up a maximum of four draft positions, thus making the bottom five draft spots the proverbial "lottery pick" where a win would earn the team the 1st overall.

Blues guys absolutely gushing about Bouwmeester and how great he is. They showed a clip reel of Bouwmeester with the Blues - there was a highlight-reel goal involving a triple deke and going one-on-one against Cory Schneider. There was also a great outlet pass from his D zone to the opponent's blue line.

My question is... where was that Jay Bouwmeester? I don't think he ever gave a sh!t about the Flames. At least, beyond the checks he was cashing from them.

My question is... where was that Jay Bouwmeester? I don't think he ever gave a sh!t about the Flames. At least, beyond the checks he was cashing from them.

Actually, this season has been Jay-Bo's best offensively as a Flame. Brent Sutter used him in a shut down role the last three years and probably restricted his offensive ability. If this was a full season he would have had 35-40 points, a little short of his numbers in Florida but then again his stats like Joker's were probably overinflated in the weak SE division.

As for being physical, Darryl Sutter knew exactly what he was getting with Jay-Bo. Why are we all surprised he doesn't hit anybody? For the umpteenth time, a lot of Flames fans can't get that concept that he's a positional player. You can't make him hit, he is what he is. If you have a guy like Jay-Bo then you pair him with a shutdown guy.

On an unrelated note, cool to see Cammy drop the gloves. Not much of a fight, it's always interesting to see non fighters drop the gloves.

Mickis stripped the puck at the blueline and had a partial breakaway. Eliott cleared the puck, but it landed on Hudler's stick. Hudler threw a dangle and dished to Sven for the one timer. Baertschi didn't get all o it, but it was enough for the goal.

Two minutes later, some absolutely dominant pressure by Andy McDonald and his unit puts the blues back in front.

I googled it after wins/losses its...The greater number of games won by the Club (excluding games won in the Shootout). Then the greater differential between goals scored for and against by clubs having equal standing under priority (d).... Unfortunately I think Carolina would still be ahead of us considering we never win in shootouts....

Also, Calgary has more regulation wins than any of the other teams picking ahead of us. This explains why Columbus would need to pass Detroit in points outright because Detroit has 20 regulation wins and Columbus only has 17. We lose all tiebreakers with our 19 regulation wins.
