FGD: It's Almost Done

Justin Azevedo
April 26 2013 01:29PM

Well, we're here. After an interminable 82 48 game season, your 2012-2013 Calgary Flames will walk out of the Madhouse on Madison tonight for the final time as a group. I feel like the game in 2009 where the Flames blew a 5-goal lead against Chicago in this very building likely spelled the beginning of the end for this era of Flames.

There are two relevant stories tonight:

1.) Is Miikka Kiprusoff going to play in his last game?

2.) Where will the Flames end up finishing in the standings?

Story one has already been resolved - Joey MacDonald has been announced as the starter, so unless he gets yanked, Kipper probably won't play another game as a Flame.

Number two has become a bit clearer after last night's results, but it's not quite there yet. The Flames can no longer catch any of the teams "behind" them, and as such, cannot pick lower than 8th in the upcoming draft.

That might be disappointing for some of you to read, but the reality is this: the Flames are not the 2nd, 3rd or 4th worst team in the league. They're a team, that when fully healthy, should be picking in the 7-10 range, and that's probably where they'll be.

At left are the four teams that can change Calgary's lottery spot. Obviously, Calgary can't win tonight if they want to move up a spot (or, they can win but then they have to hope the Oilers win both their games), but even then, moving down looks unlikely as EDM and NSH both have and would have fewer regulation wins (ROWs) than the Flames if they happened to tie the Flames in points. The only non-simple situation is CAR could tie the Flames in ROWs if the Flames won in a shootout and CAR won in regulation - and, Carolina would have the better goal differential: thus, the Flames would pick one spot higher.

Super confusing stuff.

Line Up

  • Mike Cammalleri - Matt Stajan - Lee Stempniak
  • Sven Baertschi - Mikael Backlund - Jiri Hudler
  • Paul Byron - Roman Horak - Roman Cervenka
  • Max Reinhart - Blair Jones - Tim Jackman
  • Mark Giordano - Dennis Wideman
  • TJ Brodie - Mark Cundari
  • Chris Butler - Anton Babchuk
  • Joey MacDonald

Nothing to see here.

The Enemy

  • Brandon Saad - Jonathan Toews - Marian Hossa
  • Patrick Sharp - Drew LeBlanc - Patrick Kane
  • Bryan Bickell - Michal Handzus - Viktor Stalberg
  • Marcus Kruger - Andrew Shaw - Michael Frolik
  • Duncan Keith - Niklas Hjalmarsson
  • Nick Leddy - Brent Seabrook
  • Johnny Oduya - Sheldon Brookbank
  • Corey Crawford

Well, that Patty Kane Guy is pretty good. Oh, and Jonathan Toews is probably one of the best centers in the league.

Possible Playoff Clinchers

The East's 8 seeds are all sewn up. The home ice advantage is also decided - PIT, BOS, WSH and MTL will start at home.

In the West, Minnesota can clinch with a win.

Draft Pick Watch

Nashville and Carolina are idle today. Edmonton plays Minnesota at 6 PM MDT.

Sum It Up

It's been a rough year for the Flames and us, the fans. So, in the last FGD of the year: take something positive from this season and make a note of it in the comments! Let us embrace catharsis as one.

Side note: this is my last game post this year, so I just want to say thanks to everyone who visits, reads and comments on FlamesNation. We may not always see eye to eye, but we always appreciate it when you take the time to voice your opinion.

Game time is 630 PM MDT. Catch it on TSN or Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

Once more, with feeling: Go Flames.

Things to cheer for:

- Baertschi point streak to go to 8 games.

- TJ Brodie

- Edmonton winning or losing (win, they move up in the standings past the Flames, lose and the Flames may actually finish higher than them which is HIGH-LARIOUS).

- No more SNET broadcasts/Simmerisms for rest of the 2013 season.

Agreed Kent. Cheers to the end of the Simmerisms, etc.

Well, except for that bit about the Oilers...

The wording made reading the draft order stuff really confusing haha.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Tampa wins & we lose, they move ahead of us......(in standings, behind us in draft)

Would be same amount of regulation wins with a better goal diff.

Edit: They are playing Florida in their final game, which makes it all the more possible.

Of and that last W over the Oilers. F that team, may they wallow in their own turds for a lifetime.

He won the Hobey Baker this year and was a free agent. CHI signed him and I guess it putting him in that position to see what they have now.

Things to cheer for? I've got a jersey on the line with an Oilers fan, so I'm cheering for them to get as many points as possible from tonight's game. Cheering to for your team to lose is just distasteful anyway.

jaysus..

Drew Leblanc - kid wins the Hobey in his senior year of college. Get's signed by Chicago to a healthy contract for a college graduate and has a legitimate chance to get a Stanley Cup ring. Talk about things going good for you.

Just want to say good work all year Justin and the rest of you all on FN. Alas, the end has come. Grab your beers, say your cheers and start drinking until the draft is over maybe the liquor induced coma will help with the damage of Jay Feaster's selection process and or worse trading of the #1 picks for third line UFA's :(

Happy Summer lads!

Good luck on the Jersey.

But Cheering for your team to lose is what the NHL has created with their flawed drafting system.

I'm a huge Flames fan and I want them to lose tonight and EDM, CAR and NAS all to win and pass us.

Only thing I care about in tonights game is Sven getting a point and us losing.

I know its wrong but if it increases our chances of getting Mackinnon how can you not?

The draft system is broken. For the integrity of the game and for fans watching, the team should always have the incentive to win every game. Something like the Gold system (http://oilersnation.com/2013/4/24/dear-nhl-stop-the-madness) would be a big improvement over the current setup.

As for the jersey, it'd be really sweet two win the bet two years in a row. Last year I spotted the Oilers spots and still came away with the jersey. This year, it's a straight up battle, and it didn't look like the Flames had any hope until very recently. The Oilers losing nine of the last ten certainly helped :P

Ok Kent, what am I missing here? Tampa Bay record is currently 18-25-4 GF-GA 145-145. If they beat Florida in their last game they will be 19-25-4 with a positive GF-GA. If Calgary lose tonight they also will be 19-25-4 with a waaay worse GF-GA. So how would Tampa fall beneath the Flames & pick before us?

The way I see it if we lose, Carolina could lose & we pick ahead of them, if Tampa win, Edmonton win 1 of the 2 remaining & Nashville win, Flames pick 3rd. Right??

OK edit, even though Tampa Calgary records are identical, the 19 Tampa wins are comprised of shutout wins. I think that s it but I'm pretty stupid.

Tampa has 40 points. With a Tampa win and a Flames loss, they would be tied with 42 points. Flames have more non-shootout wins (the Regulation/Overtime Wins column in the standings), and would finish higher in the standings than Tampa.

"I feel like the game in 2009 where the Flames blew a 5-goal lead against Chicago in this very building likely spelled the beginning of the end for this era of Flames."

I remember that game... the worst part was that while the wife was whooping it up (after Jokinen's goal from the neutral zone side of the blueline I think) I was frowning because I knew the game wasn't over dispite the lead. Sad day that was... Justin is right that was the beginning of the end for this era of Flames (The Sutter/Iginla Era?). Strange to think that was just a year or so after what I considered to be the emotionally opposite game (The Jaime Lundmark Red Wing Killer Game).

That Lundmark/Red Wings game was pretty awesome. For all the negative trends the Flames have had going for them the last 4-5 years, that game was the exception. Needing a win badly, on the road and down late to the Red Wings. Come from behind, get scored on late and still find a way to win in a Shootout. A positive memory

I'm excited for the first time in a long time for another season. This could be deflated by Flames management this offseason (I swear I have one bad Tyler Bozak as a Flame dream a week now. I'm not ignorant to how bad this team could be next season or the way they've got to this position, but the chance to see a relatively new group of players take center stage will be nice.

Honestly I CANNOT STAND Kristin Hallett, she honestly brings up the most senseless topics.... And has a horrendous nasally voice!! For example all interview she talked to Hanowski about how his hair was better than hers..... She didn't' even mention locks for cancer... Apparently now a days the only qualification for a hockey reporter is to be a decent looking chick... I'm with Duncan Keith!!!! lol. Maybe its because I am still only 25 years old and in my prime but hot chicks as reporters is sooooooo overplayed!! On a different note, Brossoit has made some really good saves in this game. Pretty excited about this kid

Hahahahaha. At least she is all over the interviews and always willing to travel with the team on the road. Its actually surprising how many interviews she gets in on a weekly basis, maybe she will grow on me..... I'll give her one compliment she is better than PJ Stock!!!

Oh Brossiot and Gillies are both looking like Mid Round Steals!!! Its odd every "insider" has the Flames taking a goalie with our third first rounder... Clearly they aren't aware of our prospect depth in net, really hope we stick with forwards for our three first round picks, maybe a defender that falls. I'm blown away how low some people have Josh Morrisey.... Especailly with how good he has been at the U18s, maybe we can get a hometown kid with our third first. Morgan Kilmchuk is also having a good U18s, nice to see so many Calgary prospects doing well. When was the last time three Calgary kids went in the first...

I would be highly surprised if Morrissey was available even with our 2nd First round pick (Blues). I think he goes in the top 15.

Here is what I would pick with our 3 firsts: Monahan Freddy Gauthier Bo Horvat/JT Compher

All Centres! At least there is 33.33% probability that one of the above would turn out to be that elusive centre that we've been missing forever.

How else would you count that probability? I can set up a spreadsheet with some random variables and run iterations for a sample size of at least 30 or more to make sure the distribution is ~normal and find out the mean. I think we would still come up with similar results. We are talking random picks aren't we?

Why don't you tell me what the Standard deviation and standard error of that mean would be?

Yup, lets hope Nashville comes out like Edmonton did tonight.... As I doubt they want to see rival Columbus make the playoffs!! Also Carolina keeps on putting up points of late although even going to overtime is doubtful against Pitt lets hope J. Staal has a huge night. Haha. I think we end up in Fifth outside shot a forth, which means our choice at Lindholm or Monahan, not too shabby!! Its interesting everyone has Barkov definitively ahead of Lindholm... Lindholm put up some soild points in a tougher SEL!! Also if Monahan's team Ottawa didn't trade away the team to tank for the first overall OHL pick he might have been in the conversation for the Top. 5 anyway, Regardless we are GETTING A CENTRE WITH FIRST LINE POTENTIAL!!!!

The positive end to this season is that this team finally started turn the page.

Secondly - 3 first round picks.

Most importantly the emergence of TJ Brodie. The continued development of Baertschi and Backlund.

At the start of this season I didn't have much faith that this team would be making the playoffs. Next season a new era.

The Flames applause for Kiprusoff at the end of the game last Friday night was a highlight.

Most importantly the incredible job of blogs provided by the writers and people responding on Flames Nation.
