FGD: It's Almost Done

Well, we're here. After an interminable 82 48 game season, your 2012-2013 Calgary Flames will walk out of the Madhouse on Madison tonight for the final time as a group. I feel like the game in 2009 where the Flames blew a 5-goal lead against Chicago in this very building likely spelled the beginning of the end for this era of Flames.

There are two relevant stories tonight:

1.) Is Miikka Kiprusoff going to play in his last game?

2.) Where will the Flames end up finishing in the standings?

Story one has already been resolved - Joey MacDonald has been announced as the starter, so unless he gets yanked, Kipper probably won't play another game as a Flame.

Number two has become a bit clearer after last night's results, but it's not quite there yet. The Flames can no longer catch any of the teams "behind" them, and as such, cannot pick lower than 8th in the upcoming draft.

That might be disappointing for some of you to read, but the reality is this: the Flames are not the 2nd, 3rd or 4th worst team in the league. They're a team, that when fully healthy, should be picking in the 7-10 range, and that's probably where they'll be.

At left are the four teams that can change Calgary's lottery spot. Obviously, Calgary can't win tonight if they want to move up a spot (or, they can win but then they have to hope the Oilers win both their games), but even then, moving down looks unlikely as EDM and NSH both have and would have fewer regulation wins (ROWs) than the Flames if they happened to tie the Flames in points. The only non-simple situation is CAR could tie the Flames in ROWs if the Flames won in a shootout and CAR won in regulation - and, Carolina would have the better goal differential: thus, the Flames would pick one spot higher.

Super confusing stuff.

Line Up

  • Mike Cammalleri - Matt Stajan - Lee Stempniak
  • Sven Baertschi - Mikael Backlund - Jiri Hudler
  • Paul Byron - Roman Horak - Roman Cervenka
  • Max Reinhart - Blair Jones - Tim Jackman
  • Mark Giordano - Dennis Wideman
  • TJ Brodie - Mark Cundari
  • Chris Butler - Anton Babchuk
  • Joey MacDonald

Nothing to see here.

The Enemy

  • Brandon Saad - Jonathan Toews - Marian Hossa
  • Patrick Sharp - Drew LeBlanc - Patrick Kane
  • Bryan Bickell - Michal Handzus - Viktor Stalberg
  • Marcus Kruger - Andrew Shaw - Michael Frolik
  • Duncan Keith - Niklas Hjalmarsson
  • Nick Leddy - Brent Seabrook
  • Johnny Oduya - Sheldon Brookbank
  • Corey Crawford

Well, that Patty Kane Guy is pretty good. Oh, and Jonathan Toews is probably one of the best centers in the league.

Possible Playoff Clinchers

The East's 8 seeds are all sewn up. The home ice advantage is also decided - PIT, BOS, WSH and MTL will start at home.

In the West, Minnesota can clinch with a win.

Draft Pick Watch

Nashville and Carolina are idle today. Edmonton plays Minnesota at 6 PM MDT.

Sum It Up

It's been a rough year for the Flames and us, the fans. So, in the last FGD of the year: take something positive from this season and make a note of it in the comments! Let us embrace catharsis as one.

Side note: this is my last game post this year, so I just want to say thanks to everyone who visits, reads and comments on FlamesNation. We may not always see eye to eye, but we always appreciate it when you take the time to voice your opinion.

Game time is 630 PM MDT. Catch it on TSN or Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

Once more, with feeling: Go Flames.

I like your picks too, but highly doubt if any of Ristolainen, Zadorov, or Mantha would be left by the time we pick our second 1st rounder.

Which is why we may need to use that 3rd pick to help us out.

Considering Edmonton and Philadelphia desperately need defence, I think Nurse and Ristolainen are going to those two teams. No Russians for Murray Edwards and Co. and Mantha is really hit or miss.... Some teams love him, some teams think he only shows up against weaker opponents and is soft for his size. Personally I like Gauthier or Erne more with that second pick... If those two are already gone with St. Louis pick JT Compher is proving himself against the best at U18s he might be our second first rounder not our third. I also love Bo Horvat as well when I have watched London, Domi gets all the PP time but Horvat is a work horse even strength!!! Don't get me wrong Ristolainen would be genius with our second pick if he is still around. Imagine if we could land Barkov and Ristolainen... Kipper would be back, lol.

I would take that but am partial to Lindholm unless we somehow could pick Drouin.

If the Flames somehow land in that fourth slot and get one of the surefires Barkov/MacKinnon/Drouin, I think we will make a play to move up for Phoenix or New Jerseys pick for our other two first rounders. Catch a falling Lindholm/Monahan or asure themselves of a Ristolainen/Gauthier/Shinkaruk/Morrissey... If we pick fifth (more likely) then we just take the best player available with all three picks. Please no reaching this year, lol!! On thing is for certain Ristolainen does not go past Columbus's two picks. Imagine if we draft fourth and 10th.. We could get a Barkov and Monahan.

Lots of talk that the NYI are looking for forwards to surround Tavares as well as a very solid top 4 def.Wonder if we may deal Glenx or Gio

I would absolutely love to have Freddy Gauthier in Flames colors. I think he is a Johnny Toews type of player, only much bigger.

I could even do Klimchuk with our PITT pick.

1st- MacKinnon, Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm

2nd- Ristolainen, Pulock, Gauthier

3rd- Zykov, Bowey

I also hope we pick up another mid 1st round by trading either Tanguay and/or Cammileri + if needed.

I think it is going to be a busy offseason thats for sure!!! 24+ teams apparently called Calgary regarding Glenx at the deadline..... I think we could get a first and/or top prospect for Glenx, but he could also be our Captain next year... I think tomorrow will be a major factor as to what we do at the draft and offseason.... If we move up to fourth I think getting one of the surefire prospects lets us make a bolder decision to move up for another Top. 10 moving the St. Louis/Pittsburgh picks or even a player for another first rounder... If we draft fifth/six it will be a more wait and see type of scenario.

@T&A4Flames

Why do people keep thinking we will draft a Russian (Zykov).... Nope not happening.... Period!! Haha, There are four or five NHL teams that refuse to draft Russians, Calgary is one of the leaders of that movement... Not to say I wouldn't like a skilled Russian I just don't think it would ever happen with Mr. Edwards. Anyway I would LOVE Bowey with our third pick thats bang on, but seems to good to be true!!! I doubt we take two defenders if our second is a forward than we will go for a defender with our third (maybe even a McCoshen/Hagg) or vice versa. Ristolainen is not falling past the Finish GM in Columbus with both the 15 or 18 picks... If we don't trade up or get another first from a NYI pick via trade no Risolainen.

TSN's Jermain Franklin is reporting Joey MacDonald was stretchered off from the Flames dressing room, hope he is okay. Also, will not be traveling back to Calgary.

That makes a great deal of sense.

Correct me if I'm wrong but now even if Carolina loses we remain in 5th draft spot?

@dotfras

Nope, because the Hurricanes have that waskawy shootout win, which means the Flames have one more ROW, and thus "win" the primary tie breaker.
