GDB 36.0: FEASTER AND FAMINE

Jason Gregor
April 03 2013 02:53PM

While the Flames shipped out Jarome Iginla and Jay Bouwmeester and replaced them with prospects that Barry Fraser wouldn't draft, the Oilers skate into the Saddledome ready to show Flames fans what six years of sucking can do for you.

The Flames haven't won a playoff series since 2004, the Oilers have won three since then, and in 24 days the Phlegms will be out of the playoffs for the 4th straight year. Make no mistake the last seven years have been brutal for Oilers fans, but at least they have something to show for their loyalty. The Oilers seven-year drought produced Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov, Magnus Paajarvi and Sam Gagner.

The Flames' plunge into suckville has garnered them first rounders like: Mikael Backlund (softer than oleo), Greg Nemisz (4th liner in AHL), Tim Erixon (oops, he wouldn't sign in your dump of a city), _______ (didn't have 1st or 2nd round pick when missing 2010 playoffs), Sven Baertschi (solid potential 2nd liner) and Mark Jankowski (say it slowly, Stanstead College in Quebec).

Rob Schremp and Marc Pouliot had a brighter future.

Most Oilers fans won't poke that much fun at Calgary, okay one might in a few paragraphs, mainly because Edmontonians doesn't possess the inferiority complex that exists in Calgary. Oiler fans won't need to say, "At least we finished higher in the standings than you," which was the rallying cry in Calgary the last three years.

Think about that for a second.

Your team never made the playoffs, in fact they "Choked" every year in the final ten games. For the past three years, the Flames were close to the playoffs with ten games to go, and in those combined 30 games, you won a paltry 12. You averaged 4 wins in the final 10 games of the season in your annual push-to-the-playoffs-only-to-fail-and-not-get-a-top-ten-pick.

The only thing more inept than Steve Tambellini's summer free agent signings, is the Flames management in February and March and the Flames play on the ice in March and April.

Which leads us to tonight...

The Oilers and their fans head into this game knowing they will win, which is exactly how the Flames and their fans have felt the last three years. It won't be much of a battle, considering the Flames most effective forward these days is Brian McGrattan.

The Flames got a better return for Joe Piskula than they have for Jarome Iginla and Jay Bouwmeester. At least McGrattan is on your team and contributing. Top-notch GMing by Feaster and company.

  • Hall/Nugent-Hopkins/Eberle
  • Paajarvi/Gagner/Hemsky
  • Jones/Horcoff/Yakupov
  • Brown/Smyth/Petrell

  • Smid/Petry
  • N.Schultz/J.Schultz
  • Whitney/Potter

  • Dubnyk

The Flames will counter with a lineup that would battle stage an epic battle with the 2010 Oilers:

GAME DAY PREDICTION: Oilers win their 5th straight with an easy 4-2 win. The Oilers top line has combined for 19 points in the last four games and they will register six tonight.

OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: Many in Calgary will claim, "Awesome deal, getting something (5th rounder) for Blake Comeau." Get used to saying this Flames fans, as you enter into the phase where you think every draft pick will pan out eventually.

NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: After he admitted Monday night that he hadn't been, "intellectually honest about his team," Jay Feaster announces during the 2nd period intermission that the Flames will indeed be a playoff contender next year. "Mikka Kiprusoff begged me not to trade him today. He's committed to winning and we will sign him to an extension in the summer.

"Also, now that Jarome Iginla, who secretly always preferred his hometown over Calgary, is gone our core guys will flourish. Want to wager on where we finish relative to Edmonton next year? I’ll tell you very honestly. I’m getting a little sour. How many teams . . . every year, for the last 10 years, five years, eight years, have finished in the bottom five, bottom seven, bottom 10? They’ve had a pick anywhere from No. 1 to No. 10 year after year after year after year, and they still wander in the desert. And they’re no closer to getting out than they were 10 years ago. We are still positioned better than the Oilers," screams Feaster.

Good times...

***UPDATE...Turns out the NSOGDB wasn't that far off... An actual quote from Jay Feaster today..."Murray Edwards (Flames majority owner)  told me last evening that he expects us to be in the playoffs next year." You can't make this up. Wow, Edwards is delusional if he believes that.

AND NOW A WORD FROM A DIEHARD OILER FAN

Jeanshorts runs the Oilersnation twitter and when he heard I was writing this GDB he begged me to let him write a quite blurb on behalf of all Oilers fans... so here goes...

Oh, Calgary...

Where do we even begin?

You're like the Springfield Tire Yard of the NHL; You're ugly, can be smelled in 46 states (and 10 provinces) and you're nothing but a humungous pile of burning rubble at this point.

If this is what Jay Fester considers "retooling" then dear god DO NOT let him near your car. It'd be like Pimp My Ride if instead of putting TV's and a new engine in they blew the car up and told you to "never speak of this again!"

Although, it's not like we should really be surprised that Feaster buttfumbled BOTH the Iginla and Bouwmeester trades. We've all seen Spaceballs; it's only a matter of time until he accidentally locks himself in a limousine and eats himself to death.

But hey, it's not all no-name prospects and crying into your cousins breasts in Cowtown. I mean, at least your leading goal scorer isn't former Oiler 4th liner Curtis Glencross.

And it's not like you're relying on a guy who hasn't played an NHL game in 4 years and only has 11 career wins to be your number one goalie next season.

Or that your hot-shot first round pick flamed out (PUN INTENDED) with only one assist in his 10-game stint.

Or that you traded away two of your marquee players and somehow wound up with an even worse prospect pool than you started with, which was already one of the worst in the league.

Actually, basically all that's left is for Murray Edwards to sign Feaster to a five year extension and you'll be set!

You know what, this is typical Calgary. First you steal all our business headquarters and now you have the audacity to steal the title of "Most Comically Inept Run Team In The National Hockey League"? THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!

Unfortunately Calgary looks like they'll be rewarded for this absolute atrocity of a season with a top-three pick. The good thing is that with their recent draft history the nation of Bosnia will be able to celebrate their country's first ever draft pick as the Flames select their top high school player Ahmed Mujo (56GP-0G-0A).

We fully believe in Karma and things coming full circle. Flames fans, and management, have been ripping the Oilers futility hard for the last 4 years. I hope you brought a flashlight, sleeping bag and foamy Calgary, because the basement is dark, damp and it smells like Jerry Sandusky's rec room. Payback's a bitch and this one's going to hurt. A lot.

Tell your hot cousin I said what's up.

"They're ALL my hot cousin!" - Guy from Calgary

Love, Oilersnation

I am a little worried about tonights game (which I will be at) ... teams with nothing left to play for can be uninterested and terrible, or they can be so relaxed that they play superbly well.

And the Flames still have Tanguay, Cammalleri, Glencross, Cervenka, and Hudler ...

Speaking of which, that Cervenka kid looked pretty good last game. No way someone talented belongs on the Flames. Perhaps Fester will trade him to us for, say, Tulupov and Martindale? Honestly, those guys are prospects, so they *must* be good!

OK, fine, 8-1 Oilers.

Oh, and the one we lost we scored the winner on ourselves. Just in case you wanted to talk about games that really count.

At this rate I don't think we'll meet in the playoffs anytime soon.. the "Battle of Alberta" sucks now.. not much of a battle anymore.

Maybe the Oilers can chase MacDonald out of the net and put in tier 2 goalie, Kipper.

Anyhow, Edm. has no business losing to the Flames. It could happen, but it really really should not.

The PRIME years of my life were robbed from me by the pain of being an Oilers fan. Now, these Flames fans are just at the beginning. It's such a long, horrible, humiliating road. And at the end, you come out a lot greyer, angrier and your balls sag a lot lower.

And then, when they do start winning, you can't even enjoy THAT because you're so damn jaded! The Oilers could win the cup this year and I'd still wake up in the morning wondering how Tambo is going to screw up the celebration.

The worst thing for the Flames too, is that this year ANY team missing the playoffs can win the lottery! Haha

This is what happens when Peter Griffin is running your franchise. I wholeheartedly suspect Feaster to lead the flames in a huge song and dance number during one of the intermissions tonight and pass it off as 'good management'

Is anyone else kinda sad that this means we won't get meaningful BOA's for another 10 years?

As someone who was too young to enjoy the classics of the 80's, I was actually looking forward to seeing a proper Alberta hockey rivalry...

As much as I'm loving the complete destruction of the Calgary flames, I wonder if they are going to try to rebuild on the fly.....with all the money they have and they cap coming down, they realistically need one gem center, one scoring winger and one strong D and a #1 goalie and.......ummm...nevermind....they are screwed!!!!

@Travis Dakin

I'm still waiting for the Oilers to barely miss the playoffs and win the Lotto with a 0.002% chance.

On his way to shake Daly's hand he gives Feaster the old Finger Shoot Eye Wink and smiles like the dumb bastard he is for the next 45 minutes while TSN is asking him "What is it like to draft 1st Overall for the 4th year in a row?"

Answer? "Better this year because I didnt have to trade my best forward and defenseman *turns to Jay and Winks again* to do it."

Unless Feaster & company sign UFA and trade for young, seasoned NHL pros.

Another way to rebuild. I simply don't trust Feaster & Weisbrod with this task.

Somehow I feel for Flames fans, partly because I know how much it sucks to be at this point in a rebuild. Essentially, it may hurt to have moved the heart and soul, then the rest of any talent, and to know that the rest of the guys are hurting on the inside to be stuck with a losing franchise. But guess what Flames fans, this is just the beginning. The Flames CAN get worse from here. Feaster CAN continue to make mistakes. The losses will only pile up higher and higher as they fall lower and lower in the standings. An Oilers win is the only hope Flames fans can have, as our top picks are slowly filling out, figuring out the NHL and becoming superstars, and starting to win games. The Flames have a huge opportunity right now, and that's seeing how you can eventually become competitive and build around a draft from first hand experience by the Oilers.

For the sake of hockey in Alberta, which includes the Flames hopes for the future, I hope the Oilers demolish the Flames in a very lopsided score.

Go Oilers!

Unfortunately, I have to travel to 'the chuck' a fair bit for work so have the pleasure of listening to Jason Gregor on the 1260 when I'm up there. Guy is an idiot. I guess he's the best 'radio' guy they can find in that city so that pretty much speaks for itself. I realize as the 'local guy' there is a certain amount of bias - see Steinberg here in Calgary - but wearing your heart on your sleeve doesn't mean that any unintelligent drool can froth from between your lips. Nobody from Edmonton should either take a run at another hockey team with their fantastic overall record over the past 20 years or even worse comment on that persons domicile. Anyone, I have ever met that visit or now live in that city call it like it is - flat, dirty, rough, gross, dirty, flat, industrial - you get the picture. Maybe start a fresh take with some substance and let's start an exchange from that.

Let there be no mistake, all ofthis change hurts! But for once its the refreshing kind of change! For all of the gloomy fans that have nothing but negatives, shame on you! As a flames fan I've been waiting for this day for at least 6 years! We have 3 first rounders regardless of where we end up! Most likely a top 3! We have unloaded almost 15000000 off of the books and will unload probably another 3 this summer! This can be a quick rebuild! We have Sven and horak waiting in the wings. many(namely sieloff kulak culkin Wotherspoon and ramage) as a waaay bright d future! Gillies brossoit and our 2 European goalies! Some ok college prospects from our deals this week as well as Jankowski and Reinhart etc. so much to look forward to and we didn't tank every yr like the oil did and lowes miserable effort! There will be many teams unloading players in the summer because they are so tight Against the cap and we have the dough to get them! This is an exciting day! At draft time we will have much to barter with and forgot to mention the 5th rounder for comeau who I wasn't impressed with , and who we got for free on wavers anyways! If you're a flames can it is a good day and there will be many ahead of us!

I've spent the last week telling everyone that the Oilers have to go for it. Quit trading away players for picks and actually have the balls to try and make it to the playoffs.

That starts tonight. Oilers 5, Flames 2

If the Flames win tonight a little part of me is going to die.

All this Flames bashing is nice. But we haven't really proven our rebuild works. Just because we have a shot to take 8th spot tonight, with a few games remaining in a shortened season, is not going to be my mark for a successful rebuild.

It would be easy to lose sight that Management still has work to do to really improve this team, build around the talent we've acquired through the draft, and be mentioned in the same conversations as LA, Chicago, and Pittsburgh.

Our goal is not 8th in the west, our goal is the cup. I think we still have a ways to go to get there, and none of those roads involve doing nothing on days like today.

I have to give Columbus credit for doing more than nothing. Someone in their organization said they were going to make the playoffs this year, then went out on trade day and did what they thought would get it done. Plus they have three first round picks in the draft this year. So knowing that, feel free to keep applauding the Edmonton rebuild, and laugh in the inferior Flames collective Feaster faces. I'm gonna hold off a little bit.

Wait, no I'm not. Calgary sucks.

You sound like an Oilers fan in the fall of 2010...you may not have had to tank every year like the Oilers did, but that's only because there's lots of time left to do that. Like the next 2-3 years.

Hard, simple, safe, fast, and accurate, that is how we need to focus tonight, nothng else just these aspects of our system execution and we are on track, the coaches are prepared and the men are prepared, there should be a 100% effort to be consistant with our cerebral muscle memory right now, just a full 60 mins of cerebral muscle memory.

We will be prepared for this game as we are now focused on doing correctly, we will inflict our system upon them and when they react to us we will strike them immediatly with pre-planned dynamic offense.

The only changes Calgary will make is they will try to stop our d-men from joining the playactions so much. Its all they can do, forecheck aggressively, and with our back-end managment now we are in a dominant position if they try to do this. They might get dirty but I doubt it, they will likely be willing to play river hockey with us, they dont understand the evoluton we have made , if they give us one for one free-flowing possesions we will bury them early, often, and deeply.

I cant think of any advice to give Ralph and the men, they are dialed in and dont need to be messed at the moment.

Game on, I think they try to run and gun with us and it is an 8-3 game with Gagner getting five points and MPS a hattrick.

Pound the hell out of them. No mercy, they ran the scores up on us for many many years. Just beat them down for Oilers teams of the past.

Thanks,

I find it really tough to make a judgement call on our management either way, because for every positive, there seems to be a negative. And for every negative, their seems to be a damn good reason if you dig further than what it takes to be successful GM on NHL 13.

Very quietly, management essentially upgraded the fourth line, which was a glaring hole at the beginning of the year. Because of that we're able to roll all four lines, and give our top line breaks, keeping them fresh and ready to light up the competition.

I do think for a lot of people, this is the last year. Make the playoffs or not, the team has shown improvement, but this has to be it. If we are not firmly in the playoffs, and even winning a few series next season, then clearly our management needs to go. Plain and simple.

Two things:

1. Anyone who characterizes Edmonton the way you just did obviously doesn't spend time much time here. If you're in and out of Nisku for work, then sure. Come spend some legit time here to check this town out, and you'll see if runs deep. Great town (coming from a guy who had himself convinced that anywhere but here was better. It ain't.)

2. You probably didn't mind much when the goof who writes for Vancouver's blog took his run at Edmonton on vice.com. Easy to give, easy to take. Don't let it ruin your day, Sally!

Obviously feeling a little cocky and vendictive today Gregor? Be careful because cockiness usually turns around and bites you in the ass. Guaranteeing wins is a little above your talent level I think and by the way I've always been an Oiler fan.

I was on the red mile when they lost game 7. Great night. "That Gelinas goal was in!...there shouldn't have even been a game 7". Ahhhh.....memories.

I cant kick a wounded animal. Calgary is well aware of how sucky a rebuild can be, the Oil have suffered for a long time and still arent out of the storm.

Good luck with the rebuild Flames, tear it apart and build as much as u can in the 1st year. Development time is a b!tch.

GDP: Oil win. Doesnt matter the score but i think itll be close.

I usually don't get into the whole ownership, president, GM debate but it is unreasonable as an owner to expect your GM to turn a team around in one year. It scares the hell out of me.

Maybe Bryan Murray could do it but not Feaster.

We've been on the other end of this before. We've been the team with nothing to play for and the crappiest roster in the league. All we had were the games in the BoA and trying to derail the rivals. We have everything to lose and they are playing with house money. If we want to stay in this race, we can't let up one bit tonight. It is difficult to beat anybody two games in a row.

Tight game tonight. Oilers win 4-3 and remain in the hunt.

Seriously? The last three years? The oilers haven't finished above the flames since 2002/2003. I wonder if we'll have to develop the same short term memory oiler fans are notorious for...ugh!

Really? Think about what you have..

Really? So what you're saying is the Flames crap tastes better? At least the Oil used their crap to fertilize growth.

Really? It's so bad that it's not even fun to make fun of the Flames anymore. Oil fans know what's ahead for Calgary. What they can't figure out is why they prolonged it.

Truth be told, Calgary for the last 5 years has been Edmonton 2007-2012, except Kipper and Iggy did a good job of disguising it. This year, despite a pitch at the middle of the free agent market (yes, Flames fans, you really do get to enjoy Dennis Wideman's magic for the next 4 years, at 5 and a quarter mill per annum), without an elite backstop and minus the captain - well, it just gets ugly.

Building through the draft is frustrating and very hit and miss, especially with lower first rounders (look at LA in 2003 - with 3 first rounders in the deepest draft in history, they ended up with Dustin Brown(Great!!),Brian Boyle(took 7 years to play a full NHL season and by then it was with the Rangers), and, wait for it, now coming to you direct from the Swiss elite league, Jeff Tambolini.) So don't count on a quick rebuild, Flames fans- real hard to win in the NHL with 18 year olds. You'll need a few number one overalls, but don't worry, you'll have a few years of enjoying the lottery draft- up here it was the only thing we had to cheer about every spring. I almost feel sorry for you.

It's unfortunate but this is as good as it gets for the NHL. 3/4's of the teams in the league treading water or rebuilding, there's just not enough talent to go around for all 30 teams. If the Oilers or the Flames weren't in the hockey belt of North America, the NHL game would've left these towns long ago.

Most teams have only 2 or 3 decent players, not 10 or 12 like in the NFL. It's unfortunate the song remains the same in the USA, hockey sucks is still the norm.

Tambellinis actions today sure don't reflect the actions of a team headed to the post season.

Oh, and the one we lost we scored the winner on ourselves. Just in case you wanted to talk about games that really count.

whats the problem vintage flame? no comment on this?

in case you forgot, which i doubt since your likely still traumatized, the oil iced one of the greatest teams in history.

dont really remember anybody ever saying that about a flames team.

enjoy the toilet flamers, looks good on you.

Pot, please meet kettle.

After 10 long years of putting up with Lames fans on here. It sure will be a nice change handing you the kleenex to wipe that brown'ish stuff from all over your face. Remember to breathe through your mouth now and not your nose. Not an incognito Phlegms fan, yeah right.

MAN! This discussion board is heated. Seriously though, can anyone explain to me why Nashville made the trades they did today. It really doesn't seem like they were a team making trades that thought they were going deep in the playoffs.

Also, if Columbus was making the kind of trades that allows them to make the playoffs, doesn't that mean they are hunting for the same spot, us, Nashville, and St. Louis are all gunning for?

Do the Red wings start to worry about where they sit now?

Playoff Prediction: Edmonton 8th, St. Louis 9th. Out is Nashville (traded away their top scorer), and Columbus (Gaborik actually ends up bringing the team down.)

Anyone want to comment on any of this?

Hemsky, Gagner, Eberle, Pajaarvi, Hall, RNH, Yakupov, J. Schultz and Dubnyk. Enough said.

Suck it Calgary, it will take YEEEEARS for you to acquire that type of talent.

Enjoy the basement...hope you brought your blankie cuz it's COLD down there!

Not only are you getting blasted from every pundit out there for the embarrassing returns you got for the supposed start of your rebuild and lack of organizational direction but don't forget to wipe the rest of the egg off your face from the ROR debacle.

Oh, and as for your so called dominance of the Oilers? Edmonton has won 3 of the last 4 BOA's and are about to make it 4 of 5 tonight!

This one could get ugly

6-2 Oilers. Flames are clearly in the basement of talented teams at the moment.

When you look at what Calgary has left.. This is going to be one long free fall, good luck.

NSOGDP - Oilers will miss the playoffs by one point and the Flames will finish dead last.

Then, the Oilers will win the 1st ever draft lottery that all non-playoff teams are eligible for, screwing the fLames over one last time before going on a 10 year run of contending for the cup and utter dominance over said "hockey" team.

Good luck fLames fans, you better hope your GM gets fired sooner than later or this could be very long and painful for you.

Hell, sounds like the owner might even be the problem, hopefully he gets fired, oh wait, he can't be fired.

And so it begins...

With all our talent up front, would anyone here trade one of those guys for a Landeskog, Seguin, Glencross, Galchenyuk?

We have a ton of young talent, but we need some balance in our top six badly if we're ever going to get off the rebuild.

I would trade Hemsky or Yak for Glencross. Anyone else make that trade?
