Flames Take Sean Monahan At Sixth Overall

Amidst a tumultuous first round of the NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames brought a rare glimpse of sanity and stability when they chose Sean Monahan of the Ottawa 67s sixth overall – possibly the only pick accurately guessed by mock drafts and prognosticators.

The Flames have long sought a big center to anchor their top six. They've looked long and hard, acquiring Olli Jokinen twice for the role. Monahan fits the bill pretty well. He was a rock for the struggling Ottawa 67s, indicating that he'll have the patience to pitch in for a young, rebuilding Flames club over the next few years.

In addition, Monahan is a bit of a man-beast. He's 6'2” and a shade under 200 pounds – he's slightly shorter but more stoutly built than Mark Jankowski – and he got good hands, good leadership ability and is arguably the top two-way player available in the entire draft.

Tweeted Hockey Hall of Famer Eric Duhatschek: “Sean Monahan says he believes he's NHL ready. He may not be NHL ready on some teams, but he's probably NHL ready in Calgary.” He may not be an elite player right away, but he'll give Calgary a good complementary asset for this season that will (hopefully) develop into a strong top-six asset and a cornerstone of the club.

And heck, the last major player the Flames took from the OHL was T.J. Brodie, and that turned out pretty well.

1 for 1. May not be NHL ready (even if he thinks he is going to), but the Flames make the right choice at 6.

I like this pick, we need centers. Monahan was very good on a very bad team that speaks volumes. Give him time, the Flames need to draft more from the OHL rather than keep going after college guys.

I wanted Lindholm way more, but it's a good pick.

Monahan is a safe pick, but I think he'll be a good player. Probably won't play up here next year but that is ok.

We may not have gotten a high offense 1C but I hope Monohan will turn into a heavy hitter possesion wise.

Traded Tanguay and sounds like the team just picked a younger version in Poirier.

Scouts and Feaster missed out Shinkaruk. Too bad he is going to burn us down the road.

The Flames have a lot of competition at the center position this year. I hope the give Monahan a year in the AHL this year. Hopefully, they can turn one of the NHL centers into an asset and trade bait, and bring Monahan in in a year or 2.

Monahan isn't eligible to play in the AHL as long as he still has Jr. eligibility. So for him it is either the Flames or 67's. hopefully the 67's can be convinced to trade his rights to a contender in the OHL giving him more opportunities to develop.

Also hopefully play in the WJHC.

I wanted Lindholm, I think the Flames were higher on him than Monahan...just some feeling I got listening to Conroy. Monahan's a decent pick. I'm happy with it. They passed on Shinkaruk because of his size - pure and simple. I know nothing of Poirot...er Poirier, so I won't spout too much, but I've seen rankings as low as 57, and even 111...nothing in the top 30, or even top 40. At least they somewhat recovered with Klimchuk. And, Poirier apparently has blazing speed and good skills, not sure what the knock on him is. We'll see.
