Another One Bites the Dust - Ryan Howse Defects

The Flames announced today that former 3rd rounder Ryan Howse did not report to rookie camp and has been suspended by the team. The left winger was a big scorer in the WHL, managing 47 and 51 goals in his final two seasons in the dub. His scouting report came with a lot of red flags, however - his one dimensional game, lackluster skating and average vision meant Howse was a bit of a longshot heading into pro.

That shot became, err, longer when he showed up at pro camp completely overweight and out of shape a couple of seasons ago. Howse only appeared in 39 games for the Heat as a rookie thanks to a combination of injury and healthy scratches. He scored just 9 points.

Last season, Howse started the season in the ECHL and failed to make much of an impression there either. He was eventually called up to Abbotsford due more to need than merit, but again he wasn't really useful, managing just one assist in 20 games.

Howse was no longer a prospect of note in Calgary as a result. He has just one season left on his ELC, which will obviously be suspended if he continues to refuse to report to the team. We can't know if his decision is career/perception based, or if there is a deeper reason for Howse's defection, but it's not a major loss from a prospect/organizational perspective.

Howse was chosen in 2009, the year Calgary took Tim Erixon in the first round. Joni Ortio is the only player remaining in the Flames org from that entry draft - meaning it's another one that looks to be a total wash-out for this team (unless you account for Markus Granlund, Tyler Wotherspoon and Roman Horak, who were had in exchange for Erixon a few years later).

Is the goal to get as few points as possible from NHL contract players? He was a first rounder in that pool for sure.

I'm guessing he just doesn't want to put the work in. Maybe he's just goofed off this summer and rather than go through the motions of getting called fat, he just gave up.

Howse was in tough to make the Flames. Too many good prospects are ahead of him now. He may have looked around and just gave up. The Flames brass can't be happy. Had they known he wouldn't show up, you would have to think they'd have invited someone else and saved themselves the embarrassment of a no-show.

Apparently on the way to the Young Stars fitness testing yesterday he decided to stop over at Peter's Drive thru for a double cheese burger and Choc/Banana milk shake and has not been seen since.

Too bad, I had a bit of hope for him, which was extinguished when I heard he showed up to camp like a tub of goo. You would think that going pro would make you think that being in shape is a priority. Very disappointing. Best of luck to him.

Does that take his contract off the books, that's all we really need to know. :)

Feel a Commosores classic coming on: "Oww! He's a brick... Howse!"

Very thankful the Sutter draft years are over. Feaster makes some wonky trades, but he and his men are much better at drafting.

Can you explain just a little further? What is $125 waivers? Similar to unconditional waivers but if no one claims him the contract is voided?

Speaking of drafting and drafted players...it's no secret that the Flames are particularly heavy on Left Wing (notwithstanding Poirier as a Right Winger).

As you survey the other teams' prospect funnel, do you see the opportunity to round out the Flames development system with a trade for a RW or higher-end D prospect? Who would be the best bait to attract a trade partner?
