Ramo Hurt, Ortio Recalled, Street Assigned

The Calgary Flames made three announcements today.

  1. F Ben Street has cleared waivers and has been returned to the AHL's Abbotsford Heat.
  2. G Karri Ramo has an MCL injury. No word yet on severity or timelines.
  3. G Joni Ortio has been recalled from the AHL to replace Ramo.

Ramo's not yet on the IR, so Street had to head down to open a roster spot for Ortio to use. If Ramo is placed on the IR, I'd expect the club to bring up another forward from Abbotsford.

Ramo's loss could be big for the club. He's 11-10-4 with a 2.66 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. He's the team's best goalie right now and the only tender with a winning record.

Street had 1 point in 13 NHL games this year, playing primarily on the fourth line, but he's most commonly been a healthy scratch in recent games. He'll head back to the farm and take part in the AHL All-Star Game next week in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. He amassed 33 point in 31 AHL appearances.

Ortio is the lone Flames property left from the 2009 NHL Draft, but has quietly been very good on the farm in his first season back in North America in a few years. He's 19-5-0 with a 2.08 goals against average and a .930 save percentage with the Heat this year. Granted, the Heat are really good this season (and it's the AHL), but those are pretty good minor league numbers. Now, can he translate that to the NHL?

We'll probably find out on the upcoming three-game road trip.

UPDATE: Per the Flames, Ortio would be able to be returned to the AHL for the Olympic Break, as well.

@Jeff In Lethbridge

I'd disagree. Worst case, he completely implodes and destroys his confidence. Second worst he plays out of his mind and the Flames go on a ridiculous run to finish the season without a top 10 pick. Then regresses next year out of camp and gets relegated to backup in Abby. Best case, he backs up Berra for a couple of games, goes back down and puts in a full very impressive season in the AHL and comes into camp next year with the expectation of having a chance to win the starting job.

I feel no need to see him in the NHL this year at all. But that could well be just me ;)

I think many of us have been waiting impatiently to get a solid look at Ortio.

I would hope for a 15-20 game look, barring a complete implosion.

What a total goon.

Torts fits in nicely with that team (think of all those diving whining players), that City (remember that riot?) and that fanbase (cocky know it alls)

Can't wait for Ortio. Berra on a two way contract correct? Might be nice to give Berra some playing time in Abby when Ramo comes back and Ortio can see some NHL pucks for a little stretch. Wish Granlund was coming up tho. Nice to see the doors revolving as promised tho.

I hope Ortio gets the start on Thursday against the Islanders. It gives him a few practices with the team and lets him get acclimitized to the players and how they may react during games.

I agree, though, a few games at most and then returned when when Ramo is back. I'm glad to see that Ortio can return to Abby during the Olympics.

Is Roy getting called up to Abby?

Where is Byron.? Is he not the extra forward?

This will be an opportunity to see what Ortio can do now.

Heard he looked great, with no hinderances, in practice from Hartley...

Looks to be a go...

Is that Ortio's real hair? He's gonna rival Monahan for best weave.

Wow. I am actually surprised Street cleared waivers.

We might be seeing a dman depending on when they expect Sieloff back. If he comes back, or if Russell is expected to miss more games, the Flames might call Billins up to alleviate the Heat log jam.

Yay Orti-OH!

So do the Flames have the ability to send Ortio back down during the Olympic break so he can keep playing with the Heat during that time?

Roy was already in Abbotsford with MacDonald battling concussion like symptoms.

Really hope to see Ortio in action. When Berra was called up from Abby, his first game was against Chicago, kind of like being thrown into the deep end, and I don't think he had to wait long to start his first game. I really hope that Ortio gets a chance to start.

Remember the good old days of Kipper, Kipper and more Kipper? While it was terrible for properly developing new talent and spreading out the workload, it was nice to have consistency. I mean he rarely got injured. We're in a whole new phase of goalie management: MacDonald, Berra, Ramo, Ortio....

How long is Ramo out, straight from TSN.ca:

The 27-year-old Finn suffered an MCL injury during Saturday night's game against the Minnesota Wild and will be out until after the Olympic break.

That's Feb. 23rd, the earliest he could come back is Feb. 27th against the L.A. Kings assuming he is healed. All depends on how well Ortio plays.

The Flames development systems seem to finally be producing NHLers.

I think this kid will make the show and one day join Monahan, Brodie, Backlund, Bouma and any other future homegrown talent.

What a total goon.

Deboer did that to Tortorella a 2 years ago, the game started with a line brawl. Deboer screamed back at Torts, Hartley ignoring him was priceless.

I find it kind of cool that both Kipper and now Ortio are both from the same city in Finland (Turku) I hope that he can transfer his stellar play up to the bigs.
