2014 Trade Deadline Live Blog

Ryan Pike
March 05 2014 09:22AM

Intrepid boy reporter (and FlamesNation's managing editor) Ryan Pike is hunkered down in the deep recesses of the Scotiabank Saddledome for the 2014 NHL trade deadline. If something goes down today in regards to your Calgary Flames, we'll be all over it.

And if nothing much happens for awhile, we'll do our best to keep you informed and entertained nonetheless. Follow along here at on Twitter: @FlamesNation and @RyanNPike.

9:15am:

Howdy, all. I've just arrived at the Saddledome. With just 11 healthy forwards available for tonight, the Flames have officially recalled Corban Knight and Max Reinhart from the AHL. Knight's been solid with the Heat this year, while Reinhart has reportedly really taken a big leap forward after getting his head kicked in last year (he was -26). Knight has 37 points in 57 games, while Reinhart has 45 points in 51 games. Knight'll wear #10 for the Flames, while #MaxPower returns to his customary #59.

9:40am:
For the curious, here's where the rosters sit as of now - you're gonna feel bad for the few diehard Heat fans here.
FLAMES: Berra & Ortio (G); Smid, Russell, Giordano, Wideman, Brodie, Butler & Smith (D); Colborne, Knight, Backlund, Cammalleri, McGrattan, Bouma, Stempniak, Monahan, Hudler, Byron, Galiardi & Granlund (F); Ramo, D.Jones, Westgarth, Glencross (injured); Stajan (personal/unavailable)
HEAT: MacDonald & Roy (G); Wotherspoon, Breen, Ramage, Arsene, Billins, LaFranchise & O'Brien (D); Street, Elson, Jooris, Trupp, Kremyr, B.Jones, Lyon, Locke, Hanowski, Bancks, Baertschi & Olson (F); Sieloff, Ferland, Foster, Gillies (injured)
So...yeah. Not a heck of a lot going on on the farm. They're without their #1 goalie, their two most dangerous scorers and their top two-way pivot. And they weren't an amazingly deep squad to begin with. If a defender needs to be recalled, it'll be Wotherspoon. If another forward needs to come up... I got no idea. Hanowski? Street? I can't imagine they bring up Baertschi unless they really, really need him.

10:05am:
Derek Smith has cleared waivers.

10:28am:
Flames are on-ice for practice. Everyone's here except for Matt Stajan, Derek Smith and T.J. Galiardi.

10:45am:
Derek Smith has been officially assigned back to Abbotsford. The Flames roster is, at this point, at 22 bodies. Stajan is non-roster, while Westgarth, Ramo, Jones and Glencross are all on the IR.
By the by, Joe Meloni at College Hockey News is reporting (via Twitter) that "I guess everyone figured this. But all signs point to Gaudreau signing in CGY as soon as BC's season is over."

11:22am:
Practice and media availabilities are over the Flames. Galiardi's hurt and Smith got sent down, so the Flames have the bare minimum of healthy NHL bodies right now. If somebody gets shipped out, they'll need a body back (from Abbotsford or elsewhere) to fill out their line-up.
As expected, gigantic scrum for Corban Knight in the locker room. Tons of media here, which is somewhat unusual for a game-day skate.

11:30am:
Granted, they're a development team that this is what was always gonna happen, but you gotta feel a bit bad for the Abbotsford Heat. They play Texas, one of the better teams in the AHL, and by my recollection, they don't have enough centers. Ruh-roh.

12:06pm:
We're an hour from the deadline and so far, the biggest news is that lunch has arrived. Still no chatter whatsoever from the usual suspects regarding Flames moves.

12:31pm:
Still nothing yet. For giggles, Calgary's last 5 years of deadline day moves:

  • 2013 (Feaster): Blake Comeau to Columbus for 5th rounder
  • 2012 (Feaster): Nothing; signed Tim Jackman to extension
  • 2011 (Feaster): 7th rounder to Atlanta for Frederik Modin
  • 2010 (Sutter): Curtis McElhinney to Anaheim for Vesa Toskala, Riley Armstrong to Detroit for Andy Delmore, Dustin Boyd to Nashville for 2010 4th rounder, Aaron Johnson & conditional pick to Edmonton for Steve Staois
  • 2009 (Sutter): Lawrence Nycholat, Ryan Wilson & 2009 2nd rounder to Colorado for Jordan Leopold; Matt Lombardi, Brandon Prust & conditional 1st rounder to Phoenix for Olli Jokinen; Kevin Lalande to Columbus for 4th rounder

Riveting, I know.

12:50pm:
Ten minutes. Flames chatter conspicuously absent from the Twitter machine.

1:00pm:
And we're at the deadline. Trades HAVE to be in the league office as of right now to be processed. Trade calls will be going on consistently throughout the next...however long it takes to do them all. Expect a flurry of announcements over the next hour.

Hopefully there's a Flames trade or two in there.

1:05pm:
Pierre LeBrun indicated that Lee Stempniak may be heading to Pittsburgh. Elliotte Friedman saying maybe something between Calgary and Colorado.

1:09pm:
Adrian Dater is saying Berra may be going to Colorado.

1:19pm:

1:25pm:
Still waiting for details on the potential Stempniak and Berra moves. Flames don't have any extra human bodies in town, so they'd need to bring up a forward and/or a goalie.

1:27pm:

1:55pm:
Still waiting on Burke. Only deal we're expecting to hear about is Reto Berra to Colorado.
An underwhelming trade deadline to say the least.

2:00pm:
Reportedly Ben Hanowski is on is way up, too. (Ryan Pinder got a tweet from a person in Abbotsford that saw him and MacDonald at the Abby airport.)

2:12pm:
Official trade is Reto Berra to Colorado for the Avs' second rounder in this year's draft. Blown away by that return. That's a great get for a guy who was essentially Calgary's back-up.

2:24pm::

Flames now have a 1st (own), two 2nds (own and Colorado's), two 3rds (own and one from Penguins), a 6th (Anaheim's), and their own 7th. Their 4th was sent to Toronto for Joe Colborne, their 5th went to St. Louis for Kris Russell, then 6th went to Dallas for Lane MacDermid.

Bear in mind, we're waiting for official confirmation that the pick from Pittsburgh is for this year's draft.

A 3rd for Stempniak is good value for Burke.

That and the Berra trade return is good work.

That's pretty much what I was expecting for him. I like Stempniak, good solid NHL'er... best of luck to Lee, Mrs. Stempniak, and his two new lil'darlings.

As a Flames fan I gotta say. Nucks are screwed. Your team is in the denial/bubble/post-apex/declining phase still. I hope you stay there for 3-4 years and keep re-upping the Sedins until they are too old to be worth anything and get dealt for pennies on the dollar at trade deadline.

At that point you'l be ready to start your looooooooooooooooooongggg rebuild.

Enjoy. You should be back in the playoffs by 2023 if things go well.

It is immensely disappointing... I'm pretty sure that if you told people a day or two ago that we'd be walking out of the deadline with just a 2nd and a 3rd few if any people would believe you.

Why wouldn't we have believed that as our return?

Burke doesn't have a history of trade deadline deals, let alone fire-sales, the market for flawed scoring wingers was glutted (Vanek, Moulson, Hemsky, etc.), and the majority of teams are capped out.

Burke just got us a 2nd round pick for RETO FREAKING BERRA, I am not only NOT disappointed, I am ecstatic!

Jesus. People just losing their minds, eh? Calm down everyone, I doubt the return in a Cammy trade was really going to make or break the "rebuild". Sure, would like to have seen something, but meh, sometimes things don't materialize - for whatever reason.

I don't know why some trumpet Burke's abilities to make trades and when he fails to make one that we pegged for months, they brush it off as nothing.

How can you just say "ah whatever"? This was an asset that needed to be cashed in, hanging onto guys and not getting anything for them is a mistake.

Unless Cammaleri resigns in CGY, this was a pretty big fail on Brian Burke, and make no mistake, this is on him. He could have lowered his price and gotten something. All those trade scenarios that were created for Cammi were obviously overvaluing him. Quite frankly, I would've been over the moon with a 2nd for him and a 3rd for Stemps.

Getting a second for Berra is just a taste of what Burke will do for the Flames! Berra a 27 year old goalie who let's huge rebounds out and can't hold a lead in the 3rd period gets you a second rounder! Yah!

If Burke signs Cammy which I believe he will do he will then in essence ensure his young players are surrounded with solid veterans. Remember the Oiler model??

Stempniak for Crosby? Sounds about fair. Though, to account for the cap we'd be taking, they should throw in a couple 1st round picks...

I don't understand how people are supportive of keeping Cammy. The guy has already packed his bags. There is ZERO chance he stays. Absolutely none. Why would he?

Burke played chicken, tried to wait until Vanek happened, and got stuck. Now he'll try to spin it.

Why on earth would Cammy resign. There is no reason. He'll make more money, in the city of his choosing, likely on a contending team in the summer. Even if we match money, I can't fathom why he would stay.

So ya, getting a 6th rounder for him would have been humiliating, but less stupid than getting nothing.

Where is the evidence that he'll want to stay? Are we going to give him term and $$?

All those important things you mentioned can be done by other players all of whom we can sign come July and don't cost us what Cammy could have netted in return.

Unless people are wrong and there is still a Cammy trade coming this can't be seen as anything but an epic fail by Burke.

Does kinda put into perspective the returns last year (Iggy), we got something but most said not enough. This year no trade (Cammi) and many are saying shoulda taken whatever may have been offered.

In the long term, Burke can stick with the claim that "the price is what I'm asking, if you don't want to pay it, I will keep the asset." Could be a benefit in coming years? But not moving Cammi does HURT. Buff made so many deals and scored so many picks.

That is something of an understatement isn't it?

We got more for Berra than Edmonton did for Hemsky, and I NEVER saw that coming.

All of which makes the deal for J-Bo; Poirier, a 2nd, and Cundari.

Cammy staying during the rebuild would be beneficial by keeping the competitive attitude alive, educating the younger players, reaching the cap floor, winning a few hockey games. All of those are immensely important things.

Flames still have Gio, Stajan, Wideman, Hudler, Smid, GlenX, Jones, etc. Lots of established NHLers who can bring leadership. Is 1 guy gonna make a huge difference on a rebuilding team.

I think not

He didn't resign in 09 when the Flames were a playoff team, why would he resign when their challenging for worst in the league? Money? He could get similar money on the open market.

Not to mention the fact that Cammi probably wants to win a Stanley Cup, cuz he ain't getting any younger

So what are you giving up? 2014/15 first rounder + Baerstchi, Gaudreau, Monahan, etc. ? I think not! This team doesn't need to make a splash for a UFA goalie (Halak), or an older goalie that will at most plunge us back into mediocrity (Ward).

Yeah, Cammy has all the leverage now... he makes Burke pay up or Burke looks the fool for not trading him when he had the chance.

If Burke wanted to keep Cammy his pen should have been put to paper before the deadline if not your just crossing your fingers that you didn't make a huge mistake.

Why aren't you including Gaborik?

Frankly... considering that for every two reason someone can come up with for Cammy to elect to stay I can probably think of two for him to elect to go.

It was a simple decision making process... will Cammy sign an acceptable extension before the deadline yes or no. If yes, try to trade and if prices not to your liking sign if no make the best deal you can... it'll be better then the conditional 6th round pick you'll get on draft day.

So far the Brian Burke administration is making me miss the Jay Feaster administration... Feaster at least got something for our upcoming UFA forward. It appears the sum total of Brian Burkes GM contribution to the rebuild will be trading Berra for a 5th and an AHL guy for a facepuncher.

I'm curious if prices are so low now does this make trading Bouwmeester when we did a blessing in disguise? I shudder to think what would have happened if he'd been held onto.

That Burke didn't trade Cammalleri even for mid-round picks is a serious error.

Did he not say yesterday that all picks have value? That they are all plausible ways of bringing talent into an organization?

Perhaps Burke retains Cammalleri for another season or two. But given the current trajectory of the Flames, and Cammalleri's declining play and the emergence of the new culture of youth in the NHL, I rather doubt that he will re-sign in Calgary.
