FGD: Prelude

Alright folks, I know we are all a little buzzed from the teasing of the  OFFICIAL news that our loveable group of try-hards is about to get an extra special dose of hobbit magic. BUT. There is still a game to play before that against the Winnipeg Jets. We are going to have a whole lot more on the big day in a little bit but in the meantime, there is still another hockey game to be played tonight.

So, consider this Gaudreaustmas Eve, but first your parents are making you go to church. And Kevin Westgarth is giving the sermon.

Lineups and abbreviated preview after the jump!

THE FIGHTIN' FLAMES

Here is the Flames lineup thanks to our buds at Daily Faceoff:

Byron - Cammalleri - Hudler
Glencross - Monahan - Colborne
Westgarth- Bouma - McGrattan
Van Brabant - Stajan - Galiardi

Brodie - Giordano
Butler - Russell
Billins - Cundari

Ramo

The Flames have won a bunch of games in a row, largely thanks to Karri Ramo who has been unreal. Really, really good. That has emerged as another encouraging sign to come out of this season.

After the birth of his second child, Paul Byron draws back into the lineup, only days before he is placed on the wing with Cammalleri and another rather small forward. RIGHT?! we all wanna see that right? Maybe they can all stand on top of each other with an oversized trench coat? That would put butts in seats. Ken King, call me.

I think we all kinda felt for poor BvB the other day after his highly publicized turnover that lead to the third Kings goal. Poor kid, he looked crushed. Hopefully he can shake it off and continue trying to prove that he is NHL material.

THE THRASHJETS

Here is the Jets lineup thanks to Dailyfaceoff:

Kane - Little - Frolik

Tangradi - Jokinen - Wheeler

O'dell - Slater - Halischuk

Kingberg - Cormier - Peluso

Stuart - Trouba

Enstrom - Postma

Pardy - Redmond

Pavalec

The Jets are a mediocre team that are going to miss the playoffs again. There roster isn't really anything special to be honest. I do like Frolik though. Blake Wheeler has also had a pretty good season as well.

Also, Olli Jokinen is back and now he has hair. Am I the only one who just kinda assumed he couldn't grow hair at all? Either way, I am still 95% sure he is an alien.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN, BASIL?

6835060992_de52d24f52

The Flames are awaiting the arrival of the Gaudfather so this game is one that isn't really registering high on anyone's memorable-meter. In fact, I think even the most strident observers to the "win-every-game-to-build-a-winning-culture" mantras would acknowledge that it might be okay to drop this one..

Either way, if Ramo continues to play the way he has, there is no possible way to lose. He is too cool and his mask, too sweet.

Leave Grats in to scare anyone from looking sideways at our new College line! Give them PP time and cushy offensive zone starts to see what they can do!

I hadn't realized Arnold is a right handed shot. So in addition to some hobbit magic, we get something really "handy" into the line up too.

Sorry. That's in Vancouver.

In case nobody else noticed, Hartley started the goon squad on the very first puck-drop tonight. Nothing happened, but it could be a prelude to the game against Vancouver.

Nice to see Brodie doing his best to make van Brabant feel better about his facepalm moment the other night. Err... Maybe not.

Carolina and Islanders win! 5th place is safe. 4th place is still up for grabs.

The Flames could tie Carolina if they win two and Carolina loses their last. The Flames would have more wins if that happens, so fifth is not yet safe.

The islanders just won, so fourth isn't out of the question either, although the Flames still need to lose two for that to happen.

Carolina has 34 regulation wins. Flames only have 28, so I think Carolina would still win the tiebreaker?

@Flash

Edit: I suck at keeping track of how the standings will be apparently. I'm going to stop and just enjoy watching this game. The Flames will finish where they finish.

Islanders' next game is against Buffalo, so 4th is still within reach, but Flames would have to lose tonight and in Vancouver, which I don't see happening.

So good chance we're looking at 5th.

Okay, I've got it straight now.

The Islanders ROW (regulation plus OT wins) is lower, so they'd get the fourth pick if there's a point tie. That means the Islanders must pick up one more point in their remaining game than the Flames do tonight and in Vancouver. So, to pick fourth the Flames need 0 regulation wins and no more than 1 OT loss. This is pretty unlikely.

The Flames ROW is 3 lower than Carolina's, so there's no way for the Flames to pass Carolina now. Only the lottery can take the fifth pick away now.

@Burnward

I might be wrong, but Vancouver has more OT losses...so that's the tiebreaker, no?

@Burnward

It doesn't look like it. If the Flames win 2 without shootouts and Vancouver loses 2 in regulation the two teams' ROW's would be tied. The next tie-breaker is "The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs"[1], which Vancouver easily wins.

Still, it's hilarious that a tie-breaker might even be necessary to decide who is ahead!

More good news:

Monahan's goal total is now officially ahead of Iginla's rookie season, although Iginla still had more assists.

Many thanks dude.

That would be about perfect. Tie Vancouver but still finish behind them!

No, first tiebreaker is most ROW (regulation or overtime wins). Second tiebreaker is most points earned in head-to-head matches. Even if we are tied with Van in ROW by the end of the season, they pretty much owned us in the wins column. Hence, Van owns the tiebreaker and we would finish beneath them.

This is true - Monahan will have done it in 7 or 8 less games than Iginla, who played 82 in his rookie season.

Not that it really matters cause Van is gonna beat the Oilers tomorrow and finish with 83 points anyway.

Who cares what Gaudreau's height is. Hello? Theoren Fleury was an 8 time 30 goal scorer, and had put up 63 or more points 12 times. 455 goals 633 assists for 1088 points in 1084 games. Anything is possible.
