Flames Sign Gaudreau & Arnold

Ryan Pike
April 11 2014 05:00PM

And it's official.

The Calgary Flames have formally announced the signing of NCAA standouts Johnny Gaudreau and Bill Arnold to entry-level contracts. Both are expected to meet the team in Vancouver and may be in the line-up for Sunday's finale against the Vancouver Canucks.

Per the team, terms are three years for Gaudreau with a cap hit of $1.85 million, and two years for Arnold with a cap hit of $900,000. The first year will burn off both contracts (and neither can go to Abbotsford).

Arnold, 21, was Calgary's fourth round selection in the 2010 NHL Draft. He's had a pretty strong NCAA career; he made the All-Rookie Team, made the American World Junior team, won an NCAA Championship, and emerged as one of the best three-zone players in the entire NCAA. He put up 144 points in 159 games with Boston College. He'll wear #46.

Gaudreau, 20, was the Flames fourth rounder in 2011, and has been probably the best collegiate prospect of any team over the past couple of years. He's won an NCAA Title, a gold medal at the World Juniors, two Hockey East MVPs and just locked down a Hobey Baker. He put up 175 points in 119 games with Boston College. He'll wear #53.

And now, everybody exhale. They both signed. Everything's gonna be just fine.

"And as I also like to point out... Jay Feaster made some good moves"

Feaster made some AWESOME moves, especially in retrospect:

- Getting Cammalleri and Ramo out of Montreal (this deal is all but a total rout, except that the 2nd rounder ended up being Zach Fucale)

- Fleecing Sather in the Erixon deal

- Drafting JG. In the 4th.

Etc. Feaster really doesn't get enough love.

Exciting news!

You know, perhaps due to all the praise Johnny Hockey gets, it seems like Bill Arnold is always in his shadow a bit. I think if they weren't both Flames prospects and players on the same college team, there would be a lot more praise for Arnold than there already is. I would not be at all surprised if he turns into a very solid and reliable NHL'er.

No doubt Gaudreau is great though, and he deserves a lot of credit. Just wanted to say I'm very excited for both players. :)

I was always in the camp of strategical/realistic/cynical/mean tanking camp. But for Sunday, forget about Ekblad/Bennet/Draisatl/Dal Colle; it's all about Johnny Hockey. And for the next year forget about McDavid/Eichel/Barzal; let's be trustworthy with Gaudreau, Backlund, Monahan, Brodie, Baertschi, Granlund, Wotherspoon, Knight, Colborne. Very excited about young guns.

I think every nervous nelly who polluted our threads with their incessant whining about Feaster/Burke/ownership are; not doing enough/should be flying his parents somewhere/screwing up getting JG/running the franchise into the ground, turn up to apologize to everyone for the giant waste of time they perpetuated.

I mean seriously. We had people here parsing parental interviews like CIA Kremlinologists looking for hints that a Soviet tank commander might be ready to defect, and then turning their fantastic powers of observation on to how Boston will be where JG ends up and how we'll get nothing for him.

I realize there is a marked lack of drama in their lives, but the levels they were willing to go to invent it was simply jawdropping.

Have to give Burke some credit for this. He put the fears (legitimate or not) to rest early and got it done. Still not a Burke guy but this is a good mark in my book.

That said i was so stoked to hear the news, and i can't wait to see if these two are as good as we hope they are.

Being a Flames fan in Vancouver finally pays off as i can see their first game live, for cheap, you know, because of the dumpster fire here...

One wonders about the fairness in firing Feaster. Clearly he made some poor trades but name a GM out there who hasn't. His drafting record (with Weisbrod) looks better with every signing. Taking the high road, if he is not cut out for a GM position, maybe Feaster needs to run a scouting program for an NHL team.

Dude, Feaster and Weisbrod were brutal at drafting. Feaster's greatest strength was letting people do their job and whenever he didn't do that, he'd make a mistake. Just look at Jankowski, the almost signing of Brad Richards and ROR.

I give Feaster credit for the moves he made to strengthen our farm team and for mostly giving the drafting reins to Button during his time here. I wouldn't go as far as saying he should run a scouting program though.

He deserved to be removed from the GM position.

I have a dream...

In 2016-2017

Gaudreau - Monahan - James Neal (trade/UFA)(elite)(two way scorer)(productive sniper)

Klimchuk - Backlund - Poirier (sniper) (2way & possession) (speedy, pesky,productive)

Baertschi - Granlund - Colborne/Agostino (offensive winger)(vision, scorer) (support winger)

Ferland - Arnold - Bouma (gritty) (two way shut down center with offensive upside) (hit provider, shot blocker)

Ekblad - Brodie (complete defender) (transition defender)

Giordano - Wotherspoon (complete defender) (stay home defender)

Sieloff - Kanzig (gritty, hit provider) (stay home tower)

Gillies (big athletic goaltender)

Ramo (skilled, reliable well rounded goalie)

An important life skill is not worrying too much about the improbable even if it has happened to you in the past. Hopefully Gaudreau's signing will help some people learn this.

Gaudreau and Arnold were great together in the NCAA and are buddies who have dreamed of debuting in the NHL together. Hopefully they'll be on a line together in Vancouver!

I have been following Arnold's college somewhat. This kid has a great attitude, size, speed and reasonably soft hands. Very strong off the face off circle and exceptional on the PK. A solid third line centre, power forward with some scoring touch!

What's very important is his friendship with Johnny Hockey! With Augostino these 3 guys are the springboard to our rebuild IMO!

It has to with CBA, NCAA players are treated differently than CHL players; I believe if Gatinue loses to Halifax tonight then Poirier could play for the Heat as he has already signed a contract(same a Klimchuk I believe)if I'm wrong I'm okay with being corrected.

On another matter; last night I heard on the Oilers game that Hockey Canada invited four Oilers to the worlds: Perron who said yes, and RNH, Eberle, and Hall who said they would have to think about it. Is there any news about whom might have been invited from the Flames? If no whom do people thinks should be invited; for me it would makes sense to invite Gio and Brodie as a tandem and possibly Monahan with a look to the future.

CP...funny how a class hockey player like Perron quickly accepted the opportunity. With Eberle, RNH and Hall having to think about things really tells me a lot about the character of those players! Wonder why the Oilers remain pathetic despite the high talent of young players??

When a team with empty cupboards (at the time) loses a first rounder highly regarded defenseman in Tim Erixon, Flames fans have every right to be nervous. No "prophecy's of doom" as you say just ordinary hockey fans expressing opinions on a hockey blog intended to express opinions!

Glad you pointed out you made the right call! Very astute on your part. Please explain how you made your call on a very complex situation that had all the other Flame fans perplexed?? How did you develop such exceptional hindsight?

A. Flames fans were right to be 'nervous' after Erixon's stunt, but these threads were chock a block of sheep stampeding over a cliff. Factor in that Feaster absolutely killed the Erixon deal, and it was clearly unwarranted.

B. There were definitely 'prophecies of Doom' in abundance round here. Go back and read the threads, the end of the world was definitely nigh.

C. Of course you can express your opinions round here. Just don't whine when the rest of us point out that your opinions are wrong.

D. The way I made my call was simple. The number of entry level players who spurn their drafting team is vanishingly small, on the order of one every two years for the whole league. So out of the hundreds of players who are picked each year at the draft chances are half of one will try to game the system. Given Calgary had already had one of these rare events occur to them, the chances that another player would pull the same stunt successfully was infinitesimal. But of course, some Flames fans prefer to treat the rare event (Erixon being a douche) not as a statistical event, but as a narrative one.

To put it another way, the chances that JG walked on the Flames were about the same as Edmonton landing another Justin Schultz FA signing.

E. Not all us fans were 'perplexed' by the 'complex situation'. Some of us saw it for what it was. The routine signing of a draft pick who went to college.

F. It was not exceptional 'hindsight', it was intelligent foresight. Feel free to review my comments on the matter in previous threads. I said the idea that JG would jump was bunk, and I said it early and often.

You heard it here first! At this years draft Burke will complete a trade with the Blackhawks that will see the Flames acquire Kevin Hayes, a former 1st rounder. Kevin Hayes happens to be the 3rd guy on the Guadreau - Arnold line with BC.

The Flames will then have the most prolific line in USA College hockey history! Yah!

This should be exciting; we should be able to roll 4 solid lines. We still need to add some more bigger skilled forwards but we have a good starting point; let the battles begin.
