Tyler Wotherspoon reassigned to Stockton

Per the team, the Flames have reassigned defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon to the Stockton Heat. He was recalled last week to replace Brett Kulak, but after being unable to crack the roster, the team returned him to the AHL affiliate this morning.

Wotherspoon didn't play in any of the four games he was eligible to play in. With no immediate need for him, and considering his waiver exempt status (he would require waivers if he spent 30 calendar days or 10 NHL games on the roster), it's easy to understand why the team made this move. He will rejoin the Heat, where he plays top minutes and has six points in 19 games. Stockton plays tonight in San Diego, but I doubt he'll be able to make it.

This transaction leaves the Flames with only six defenders on their roster and 22 players on the active roster. No other moves have been made yet, but we'll keep you updated when something does happen.

If I'm Tyler Wotherspoon I'm leaving this organization at the end of the season, and questioning why it took so long to do so. Seriously. The ratio of time spent playing prospects versus sitting them must be so skewered. You can only learn so much sitting in the press box, not getting any NHL ice time, and missing prime minutes in AHL games.

But it's okay. We have Dennis Wideman.

Rather than the opinions expressed above I will side with 2 different professional coaching staffs the have determined Wotherspoon is simply not good enough to play at the NHL level.

I'd argue the coaching staff thinks he's not good enough to displace a left hand shot defensemen.

@Stu Cazz

If Ty isn't good enough to play at the NHL level then that means our Defense prospects (except Kulak who can't be considered a prospect anymore) aren't ready to play at the NHL level either since Ty was playing top line minutes before he was called up

When Ty played a few games two seasons ago, he looked decent. The kid has enough talent to play at the NHL level albeit in a 5-6 role it's just that the coaching staff that don't want to play him because he's not a great skater since he's a more stay at home defender which imo is what the Flames really need

He's good enough to get a shot at learning at this level. How will he improve otherwise. He's destroying the AHL as a shut down option. He can't be worse than some of the other options we have.

Sorry but that's a joke! WHY BOTHER? Unless they thought they had a trade worked out to ship out one of our D-men and it fell through? Second I'd like to point out that a lot of this roster freeze/tinkering crap is all due to the frigging expansion draft. Why don't the flames make a play for a top 4 D-man = "the frigging expansion draft" No one wants to lose a good player, esp a top 4 guy for free when he costs you good prospects or future picks. All 30 teams are in the same handcuffed boat and it stinks! Next time Flames give him a chance to play please.

Kid got shafted again. Would have liked to see him get at least a few shifts with Brodie, but alas..

Honestly I like the kid and have been a supporter...when the Flames placed him on waivers earlier in the season I was assuming that at least one of the remaining 29 teams would put a claim in but he cleared waivers....what certain fans observe from their couches at home and what reality is can be significantly different....I again revert to the professionals that make these decisions.

He was probably hoping he'd get claimed... I agree, no way he's sticking around after this season..

What if they told him he wouldn't play but this pay check would be his reward for his good work in Stockton. I'd be happy if I was him

One of my goals for the Flames this season is to see a minimum of two young defencemen play 50+ games with meaningful playing time. Why two? To replace Wideman and Engelland by the end of the year and possibly a third taken in the draft. At the start of the year, I envisioned two of Kulak, JJ or Spoon being those guys. My goal may still be met, but, it's getting tighter with each passing game.

Is Tyler like Robyn Regehr?IE, does he have a true shutdown ability? IE, will he crush you into the boards or cross-check you in front of the net like a mean defenseman should? If he has the ability to learn to do this then I say we keep him.

Crack the roster, what are you smoking? Wotherspoon is an every day NHLer and he belongs up here. They call up Kulak he plays a bit then sits for a few games and get sent down. Tyler gets called up doesn't play a second and gets sent down again, ridiculous. Stop pulling this Darryl Sutter garbage with your up and coming youth.
