This recent reversal by the Flames has lead to all sorts of rationales being mooted for the uptick in results, from a happier atmosphere in the aftermath of Darth Sutter's removal to just being lucky and plenty of things in between. There's every possibility that every and any of those sorts of explanations are at least partly at the root of the 13-3-4 run that Calgary finds itself on, but it's the role of fortune that interests me most, and why it seemed time for a little deeper look at the Flames since they went to Dallas on December 23rd.

In this week's look at matters around the league, the Flames return home for yet another crucial stretch, an improbable comeback story is a go in Denver and the Steel City suffers losses in more ways than one or two.

Gameday Preview: Now if you want to crown them...

The Flames return home to meet a team that has been one of the hardest clubs to figure over the first two-thirds of the season. Los Angeles has the outward appearance of a club that should be home and cooled out, simply waiting for the post-season, and yet they're scuffling around with the rest of the pack in the ridiculous West. Strange year, isn't it?

Real hockey returns after a nice diversion of a weekend in North Carolina, and the Flames are back to work in another Southern locale. Tonight's foe is a familiar one, and despite their shiny record I have the same sorts of questions about their authenticity I did eight days ago.
